How much does the 2022 BMW 3 Series cost?

Prices have softened 7.28% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.

There are 1,724 listings available, which gives you a solid amount of inventory to compare.

Is the 2022 BMW 3 Series a good car?

Yes — the 2022 BMW 3 Series earns a 4.5/5 user rating and an 8.67/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Performance at 10/10.

Drivers consistently praise its sporty performance, great handling, and stylish design, and many also like the fuel efficiency and quick acceleration. That lines up with the car’s use case as a luxury sports sedan that still prioritizes driving enjoyment while remaining easy to live with day to day. The main trade-offs are the lack of a manual transmission and the fact that the stereo is lacking. Even so, the market still shows healthy interest, with 37.4% of listings marked as good or great deals.

Is the 2022 BMW 3 Series reliable?

Owners rate it 4.5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

The owner feedback also points to a car that feels dependable and trouble-free for many drivers, with praise centered on its sporty character and everyday usability. On the expert side, the drivetrain is described as a sweetheart, the transmission behaves flawlessly, and the car’s driving dynamics are presented as calm, cool, and confident under pressure. BMW also includes free scheduled maintenance, which helps reduce early ownership friction.

Used buyers should still pay close attention to maintenance history, since owner feedback also mentions persistent oil leak issues and high maintenance costs. That makes a thorough pre-purchase inspection especially important if you want to minimize long-term ownership risk.

What should I look for when buying a used 2022 BMW 3 Series?

Accident-free inventory is solid at 80.5% — always verify the vehicle history report.

You should still check the history report carefully, because a clean listing percentage does not replace a proper records review. Prioritize a pre-purchase inspection that focuses on maintenance history, signs of leaks, and overall wear. It also helps to compare trim equipment closely, since BMW spreads important features across packages rather than making them standard.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The lineup includes the 330i, 330e, M340i, and M3. The base setup is more restrained on equipment, while the M340i adds a more aggressive exterior treatment, blue brake calipers, and a stronger performance focus. If you want the best blend of value and capability, the M340i is the standout choice.
• Powertrain: The 330i and 330e use a turbocharged four-cylinder engine, while the 330e adds plug-in hybrid technology with 23 miles of estimated electric range. The M340i uses a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six with 48-volt mild-hybrid technology, 382 horsepower, and an eight-speed automatic transmission.
• Safety package: Active Guard is standard and includes forward-collision warning, pedestrian and cyclist detection, city-speed automatic emergency braking, and lane-departure warning. Blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert require the optional Driving Assistance package, while the Driving Assistance Professional package adds lane-keeping assist, lane-centering assist, evasive-steering assist, Extended Traffic Jam Assistant, and Emergency Stop Assistant.
• Infotainment: Every 3 Series gets Live Cockpit Professional with a 12.3-inch digital instrument panel, a 10.25-inch touchscreen, navigation, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and BMW iDrive 7.0. Connected Package Pro is standard, and the system also includes BMW Remote Services and Intelligent Personal Assistant.
• Fuel efficiency: The M340i returned 24.9 mpg on the evaluation route and is rated at 26 mpg in combined driving.

Which 2022 BMW 3 Series trim should I buy?

The 2022 BMW 3 Series is offered in 4 trim levels: 330i, 330e, M340i, and M3.

Here's the short version:

• 330i: This is the most straightforward entry point if you want the 3 Series experience without stepping into the higher-performance trims. It gives you the core sedan formula and the standard tech package, making it the sensible starting point for shoppers who care more about the badge and driving feel than maximum output.
• 330e: Choose this if you want the plug-in hybrid angle and the added efficiency benefit of electric-only driving for short trips. It is the trim that broadens the lineup’s appeal for commuters who want a more flexible daily driver.
• M340i: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds the turbocharged inline-six, stronger performance, and a more distinctive appearance without jumping all the way to M3 territory. It is the trim that most clearly captures the 3 Series’ sporty personality.
• M3: Pick this only if you want the highest-performance version in the lineup and are willing to pay for it. It sits at the top of the range and is the most specialized choice.

For safety equipment, remember that blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert are not standard and require the optional Driving Assistance package.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 BMW 3 Series?

This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you have room to shop carefully without waiting forever.

• Deal availability: 37.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,724 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 7.28% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 80.5% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $28,351, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2022 BMW 3 Series's resale value?

The current average of $28,478 sits slightly below last year's $30,713.

That price movement suggests the market has cooled enough to give you a better entry point than a year ago. For a future seller, that means you should expect resale value to depend heavily on condition, mileage, and trim desirability rather than broad market appreciation. Well-kept examples with stronger equipment and cleaner histories should hold up better than neglected ones, especially in a segment where buyers compare listings closely.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2022 BMW 3 Series safe?

The 2022 BMW 3 Series earns a Top Safety Pick from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), and it earns five-star ratings across the board from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), including for rollover resistance.

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

BMW’s standard safety tech package is relatively slim, though Active Guard does include forward-collision warning, pedestrian and cyclist detection, city-speed automatic emergency braking, and lane-departure warning. If you want blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert, you need the optional Driving Assistance package. The Driving Assistance Professional package adds lane-keeping assist, lane-centering assist, evasive-steering assist, Extended Traffic Jam Assistant, and Emergency Stop Assistant. One caveat is that the IIHS Top Safety Pick result applies only to models equipped with the optional adaptive LED headlights with Laserlight.

Should I buy a 2022 BMW 3 Series or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2022 if:

• 37.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Accident-free inventory is solid at 80.5% — always verify the vehicle history report.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 7.28% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It keeps the formula that made the 3 Series appealing: engaging driving character, easy-to-use tech, and multiple powertrain choices.

Consider the 2021 if:

• At $24,867, the 2021 costs less than the current year's $28,478 average.
• It adds the 330e plug-in hybrid to the lineup.

Consider the 2023 if:

• At $34,030, the 2023 costs more than the current year's $28,478 average.
• It brings sportier styling and updated cabin technology.

The bottom line: If you want the best balance of price, driving enjoyment, and current-market availability, the 2022 is the smart default. If your budget is tighter, the 2021 can save you money while still delivering the core 3 Series experience. If you want fresher styling and newer-feeling tech, it makes sense to stretch to the 2023 instead.
