CarGurus Analysis: 2022 BMW 3 Series
overall

Summary
With 1,787 currently listed for sale and an average price of $28,397, 35.4% of 2022 BMW 3 Series models for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2022 BMW 3 Series 4.5 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it an 8.67 / 10.
83.6% of 2022 BMW 3 Series models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2022 BMW 3 Series stands out as a luxury sports sedan that still leans into the formula that made the nameplate famous: it is fun to drive, offers multiple powertrain options, and pairs that character with easy-to-use technology. BMW also gives every 3 Series Live Cockpit Professional digital instrumentation with navigation this year, which helps the cabin feel modern without making it complicated. For buyers who want a sedan that emphasizes driving enjoyment as much as everyday usability, that combination is a major part of its appeal.
At the same time, the 2022 model is described as essentially unchanged from 2019, even though BMW has expanded the lineup with plug-in hybrid and performance-tuned models and made minor changes to the standard and optional equipment lists. That means the 3 Series remains familiar rather than radically different, which can be a strength for shoppers who value continuity. Its drawbacks are worth noting, though: a manual transmission is not available, advanced safety features are not standard, and the stereo is lacking.
Owner feedback generally reinforces the car’s sporty personality, with praise for its performance, handling, stylish design, fuel efficiency, and quick acceleration. Some drivers also mention oil leak issues and high maintenance costs, which are important considerations for anyone weighing the 2022 BMW 3 Series against its strengths.

The features on this series BMW are phenomenal. Looks like it will hug the ground in those tight turns. The body style is amazing on this car. Perfect for your everyday car or just your Sunday outings. Only thing it's missing Is me behind the wheel. I wouldn't really compare it to another series. It's in a class of it's own. Awesome car!!

How much does the 2022 BMW 3 Series cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $28,536 |
| Year-Round Low | $28,462 |
| Year-Round High | $30,747 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $30,748 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −7.19% |
Prices have softened 7.19% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 1,768 listings available, which suggests solid inventory availability for shoppers comparing options.
Is the 2022 BMW 3 Series a good car?
Yes — the 2022 BMW 3 Series earns a 4.5/5 user rating and an 8.67/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Performance at 10/10.
Drivers consistently praise its sporty performance, great handling, stylish design, fuel efficiency, and quick acceleration. That lines up with the overview’s focus on a fun-to-drive luxury sports sedan that still works well for everyday use and easy-to-use technology.
The main trade-offs are that a manual transmission is not available and the stereo is lacking, while advanced safety features are not standard. Even so, the market looks healthy enough to support shopping, with 34.3% of listings marked as good or great deals.
Is the 2022 BMW 3 Series reliable?
Owners rate it 4.5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
User feedback points to a car that many drivers find dependable in daily use, with praise for its fuel efficiency, quick acceleration, and overall sporty character. The expert test-drive notes also reinforce its durability-minded appeal through strong performance and confident road behavior.
BMW’s free scheduled maintenance helps soften ownership costs early on, which is a useful perk for a used buyer. Still, reports of oil leak issues and high maintenance costs mean you should budget carefully for long-term ownership risk.
What should I look for when buying a used 2022 BMW 3 Series?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 83.5% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still check the history report carefully, because a clean listing percentage does not replace a proper records review. Prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re considering a higher-mileage example or one with optional equipment. Focus on overall condition, maintenance history, and whether the car’s features match the way you plan to use it.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The lineup includes the 330i, 330e, M340i, and M3. The 330i and 330e are the entry points, while the M340i adds a stronger six-cylinder setup and more athletic hardware. The M3 sits at the top for buyers who want the most performance, but the M340i is the best-value choice if you want the strongest blend of speed and everyday usability.
- Powertrain: The 330i and 330e use a turbocharged four-cylinder engine, while the 330e adds plug-in hybrid electric vehicle technology with 23 miles of estimated electric driving range. The M340i uses a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six with 48-volt mild-hybrid technology, 382 horsepower, and an eight-speed automatic transmission.
- Safety package: Active Guard is standard and includes forward-collision warning, pedestrian and cyclist detection, city-speed automatic emergency braking, and lane-departure warning. The optional Driving Assistance package adds blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert, while Driving Assistance Professional adds lane-keeping assist, lane-centering assist, evasive-steering assist, Extended Traffic Jam Assistant, and Emergency Stop Assistant.
- Infotainment: Every 2022 3 Series gets a 12.3-inch digital instrumentation panel, a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment display, navigation, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, satellite radio, and a 10-speaker HiFi sound system. BMW also includes Connected Package Pro with Remote Services and Intelligent Personal Assistant.
- Fuel efficiency: The M340i returned 24.9 mpg on the evaluation route and is rated at 26 mpg in combined driving.
Which 2022 BMW 3 Series trim should I buy?
The 2022 BMW 3 Series is offered in 4 trim levels: 330i, 330e, M340i, and M3.
Here's the short version:
- 330i: This is the simplest path into the lineup and makes sense if you want the core 3 Series experience without chasing extra performance hardware. It should suit you if you value the car’s standard tech and balanced luxury-sedan character more than outright speed.
- 330e: Choose this if you want the plug-in hybrid option and the added efficiency-minded flexibility it brings. It’s the right fit if your driving pattern lets you take advantage of electric range and you want a more fuel-conscious 3 Series.
- M340i: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds the turbocharged inline-six, mild-hybrid tech, and a much more athletic driving feel. If you want the strongest mix of performance and daily usability, this is the one to target.
- M3: Pick this only if you want the most extreme performance in the lineup and are willing to pay for it. It’s the trim for buyers who care most about maximum capability rather than value.
For safety equipment, remember that advanced driver-assistance features are not standard, so you’ll want to check whether a given car has the optional packages you want.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 BMW 3 Series?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.
- Deal availability: 34.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,768 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.19% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 83.5% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $28,462, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2022 BMW 3 Series's resale value?
The current average of $28,536 sits slightly below last year's $30,748.
That price movement suggests the market has cooled, which can help you buy more confidently now but may also limit short-term upside if you plan to resell soon. A softer market often means future sellers need to be more competitive on condition, mileage, and equipment to stand out.
For you, that means a well-kept example with desirable options should hold up better than a neglected one. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2022 BMW 3 Series safe?
The 2022 BMW 3 Series earns a Top Safety Pick from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety and five-star ratings across the board from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, including rollover resistance.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
The standard safety suite is Active Guard, which includes forward-collision warning, pedestrian and cyclist detection, city-speed automatic emergency braking, and lane-departure warning. If you want blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert, you need the optional Driving Assistance package. Driving Assistance Professional adds lane-keeping assist, lane-centering assist, evasive-steering assist, Extended Traffic Jam Assistant, and Emergency Stop Assistant.
One important caveat is that the strongest IIHS result depends on the optional adaptive LED headlights with Laserlight, so you should confirm that equipment if safety is a priority.
Should I buy a 2022 BMW 3 Series or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2022 if:
- 34.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 83.5% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.19% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It keeps the familiar 3 Series formula with standard Live Cockpit Professional and multiple powertrain choices.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $25,396, the 2021 costs less than the current year's $28,536 average.
- It adds the 330e plug-in hybrid to the lineup.
Consider the 2023 if:
- At $34,634, the 2023 costs more than the current year's $28,536 average.
- It brings sportier styling and updated technology.
The bottom line: If you want the best balance of price, performance, and modern tech, the 2022 is the sweet spot. If your priority is saving money, the 2021 is the better value path; if you want fresher styling and updates, the 2023 is worth the premium.
