Used 2021 Volvo XC90 for Sale nearMinneapolis, MN

How much does the 2021 Volvo XC90 cost?

Prices have softened 16.89% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.

There are 1,026 listings available, which suggests you should have a workable selection to compare.

Is the 2021 Volvo XC90 a good car?

Yes — you’re looking at a model with a 5/5 user rating and a 7.7/10 expert rating. The model scores 9/10 across Look and feel and Safety.

The 2021 XC90 is Volvo’s de facto flagship, and it leans into that role with a stylish design, premium interior materials, and a strong safety focus. It’s aimed at you if you want a refined midsize luxury SUV with a distinctive Scandinavian character rather than a flashy, performance-first alternative.

The trade-offs are clear: the third row is cramped, and performance is described as sluggish. The XC90 also lacks USB-C ports, which may matter if you rely on newer devices.

With 38.2% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have a decent chance of finding a competitive price if you shop carefully.

Is the 2021 Volvo XC90 reliable?

Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

The XC90’s appeal is tied to Volvo’s long-running emphasis on safety, and the model’s current-generation design brought technology and powertrains that later spread across the brand. Its expert evaluation also points to a quiet cabin, refined road manners, and a strong overall ownership experience for buyers who value comfort and confidence over speed.

The performance setup is built around a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine family, and the plug-in hybrid adds electric assist for more efficiency-focused driving. Volvo also includes a four-year, 50,000-mile basic warranty and powertrain warranty, plus an eight-year, 100,000-mile battery warranty for the plug-in hybrid.

For used buyers, the main long-term risk is that the XC90’s premium features and complex powertrains can make condition and maintenance history especially important.

What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Volvo XC90?

Accident-free inventory is solid at 81.7% — always verify the vehicle history report.

You should still check the history report carefully, because accident-free listings are common but not universal. Prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re considering a higher-mileage example or one with optional equipment. Focus on cabin condition, electronics, and how the vehicle drives, since luxury-SUV ownership often comes down to how well the previous owner maintained the details.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The Momentum is the base model and doesn’t get the extra visual flair of the R-Design or Inscription, while the Inscription adds the most upscale presentation. If you want the best-value balance of style and equipment, the midlevel R-Design is the trim to focus on.
• Powertrain: The XC90 uses a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine family with turbocharged T5, turbocharged and supercharged T6, and plug-in hybrid T8 options. The T5 is the least powerful, while the T8 adds electric assist and the highest output.
• Safety package: Volvo’s Pilot Assist combines adaptive cruise control with automated lane centering, and the XC90 also includes lane-keep assist, a driver-attention monitor, traffic-sign recognition, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and automatic emergency braking. The base trim still gets a strong safety list, but the system’s lane-centering ability can struggle on gentle highway curves.
• Infotainment: You get a 9-inch touchscreen, a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto compatibility, Bluetooth, and a built-in WiFi hotspot. Two front USB-A ports and two rear USB-C ports are standard, and the system also supports available premium audio and a head-up display.
• Fuel efficiency: The base FWD T5 is rated at 25 mpg combined, 21 mpg city, and 30 mpg highway. The AWD T5 is rated at 23 mpg combined, 20 mpg city, and 28 mpg highway, while the AWD T6 is rated at 22 mpg combined, 19 mpg city, and 28 mpg highway. The T8 Recharge plug-in hybrid is rated at 27 mpg combined in hybrid mode and offers up to 18 miles of all-electric range.

Which 2021 Volvo XC90 trim should I buy?

The 2021 Volvo XC90 is offered in 3 trim levels: Momentum, R-Design, Inscription.

Here's the short version:

• Momentum: This is the entry point, and it gives you the XC90’s core safety-first luxury formula without the extra visual upgrades. It makes sense if you want the XC90 experience at the lowest starting point.
• R-Design: This is the best-value trim if you want a sportier look, since it adds a more aggressive appearance without changing the XC90’s fundamental mission. It’s the trim to target if you want a little more style without jumping to the top end.
• Inscription: This is the most upscale choice, with the richest presentation and the flashiest details. Choose it if you want the most premium-feeling XC90 and don’t mind paying for it.

The safety package is strong across the lineup, but the base trim still misses some of the visual and luxury upgrades found higher up.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Volvo XC90?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you should shop with a clear target and be ready to move on a strong listing.

• Deal availability: 38.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,026 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 16.89% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 81.7% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $25,878, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2021 Volvo XC90's resale value?

The current average of $25,878 sits slightly below last year's $31,136.

That decline suggests the XC90 has become more accessible to used buyers, which can help demand from shoppers who want a luxury SUV without paying new-car pricing. For a future seller, that also means you may need to compete more on condition, mileage, and equipment to stand out.

The model’s strong safety reputation and premium image should continue to support interest from buyers who value refinement and peace of mind. Well-kept examples with desirable equipment are likely to hold attention better than neglected ones.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2021 Volvo XC90 safe?

The 2021 XC90 received the highest “Top Safety Pick+” rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), and it earns five-star ratings in frontal and side crash tests, and four-star ratings in rollover testing from NHTSA.

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

Volvo equips the XC90 with lane-keep assist, a driver-attention monitor, traffic-sign recognition, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, automatic emergency braking, and Pilot Assist, which combines adaptive cruise control with automated lane centering. The non-hybrid models also earned top “Good” scores in all IIHS crash tests, plus a “Superior” rating for front-crash prevention in vehicle-to-vehicle testing.

The main caveat is that the Top Safety Pick+ result applies to non-hybrid models only, since the XC90 T8 plug-in hybrid was not updated in the IIHS testing.

Should I buy a 2021 Volvo XC90 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2021 if:

• 38.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Accident-free inventory is solid at 81.7% — always verify the vehicle history report.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 16.89% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It adds Care Key and a 112 mph limiter for 2021.

Consider the 2020 if:

• At $22,209, the 2020 costs less than the current year's $25,878 average.
• It offers a polished, family-friendly luxury feel with strong safety credentials.

Consider the 2022 if:

• At $28,872, the 2022 costs more than the current year's $25,878 average.
• It adds a more sustainability-focused personality with available leather-free features.

The bottom line: If you want the best balance of price, safety, and selection, the 2021 is the smart default. If your budget is tighter, the 2020 can save you money while keeping much of the same appeal.
