Used 2021 Volvo XC90 for Sale nearLos Angeles, CA

How much does the 2021 Volvo XC90 cost?

Prices have softened 17.13% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.

There are 1,015 listings available, which suggests you should have a reasonable range of choices.

Is the 2021 Volvo XC90 a good car?

Yes — the 2021 Volvo XC90 earns a 5/5 user rating and a 7.7/10 expert rating. The model scores 9/10 across Look and feel and Safety.

It stands out as Volvo’s de facto flagship, with a stylish design, premium interior materials, and strong safety credentials. It is especially appealing if you want a three-row luxury SUV that feels upscale and reassuring rather than flashy.

The trade-offs are clear: the third row is cramped and performance is sluggish.

With 36.5% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have some room to shop selectively.

Is the 2021 Volvo XC90 reliable?

Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

The XC90’s reliability case is helped by Volvo’s emphasis on safety, its polished road manners, and its well-established current-generation platform. The powertrain lineup is straightforward, and the cabin-focused design suggests a vehicle built to serve families over the long haul.

Its performance character is more about smoothness than speed, and the plug-in hybrid setup asks you to manage charging if you want to maximize efficiency. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is choosing a configuration that doesn’t match your driving habits.

What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Volvo XC90?

Accident-free inventory is solid at 80.2% — always verify the vehicle history report.

You should still check the history report carefully, since accident-free listings are not the same as guaranteed problem-free vehicles. Prioritize a thorough inspection of the cabin, electronics, and seating layout, especially if you plan to use the third row often. Focus on overall condition and make sure the features you want are actually present on the trim you’re considering.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The Momentum is the base model and doesn’t get the extra visual flair of the R-Design or Inscription, while the R-Design adds a sportier look and the Inscription is the flashiest of the three. If you want the best-value trim, the midlevel R-Design is the one to focus on.
• Powertrain: The XC90 uses a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine across its lineup, with turbocharged T5, turbocharged and supercharged T6, and plug-in hybrid T8 options. The T5 is the efficiency-oriented starting point, while the T8 adds electric assist and the highest output.
• Safety package: Volvo’s Pilot Assist combines adaptive cruise control with automated lane centering, and the XC90 also includes lane-keep assist, a driver-attention monitor, traffic-sign recognition, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and automatic emergency braking. Base-model shoppers should confirm the exact safety equipment on the listing, since Volvo spreads some features across the lineup.
• Infotainment: You get a 9-inch touchscreen, a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto compatibility, Bluetooth, and a built-in WiFi hotspot. Two front USB-A ports and two rear USB-C ports are standard, and the system also supports wireless charging, though fit can be limited for some phones.
• Fuel efficiency: The base FWD T5 is rated at 25 mpg combined, 21 mpg city, and 30 mpg highway. The AWD T5 is rated at 23 mpg combined, 20 mpg city, and 28 mpg highway, while the AWD T6 is rated at 22 mpg combined, 19 mpg city, and 28 mpg highway. The plug-in hybrid can return 27 mpg combined in hybrid mode and up to 18 miles of all-electric range.

Which 2021 Volvo XC90 trim should I buy?

The 2021 Volvo XC90 is offered in 3 trim levels: Momentum, R-Design, and Inscription.

Here's the short version:

• Momentum: This is the starting point, and it gives you the XC90’s core safety-first luxury formula without the extra visual upgrades of the higher trims. It makes sense if you want the most accessible path into the lineup.
• R-Design: This trim adds a sportier appearance, including a gloss-black grille surround and standard 20-inch wheels. It’s the best-value choice if you want a more distinctive look without jumping to the top trim.
• Inscription: This is the flashiest trim, with extra chrome trim and available 21-inch wheels. Choose it if you want the most upscale presentation and are willing to pay for it.

Volvo’s Pilot Assist and other key safety features are part of the XC90’s appeal, so verify the exact equipment on the specific trim you’re shopping.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Volvo XC90?

This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.

• Deal availability: 36.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,015 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 17.13% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 80.2% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $25,695, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2021 Volvo XC90's resale value?

The current average of $25,695 sits slightly below last year's $31,007.

That drop suggests the XC90 has become more affordable for used buyers, which can help demand stay healthy in the near term. For a future seller, it also means your resale outcome will depend heavily on condition, mileage, and equipment. Well-kept examples with desirable features should hold up better than average.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2021 Volvo XC90 safe?

The 2021 XC90 received the highest “Top Safety Pick+” rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), but that only applies to non-hybrid models. It earns five-star overall safety ratings from NHTSA, with five-star ratings in frontal and side crash tests, and four-star ratings in rollover testing.

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

Volvo equips the XC90 with lane-keep assist, a driver-attention monitor, traffic-sign recognition, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, automatic emergency braking, and Pilot Assist, which combines adaptive cruise control with automated lane centering. The non-hybrid models also earned top “Good” scores in all IIHS crash tests, plus a “Superior” rating for front-crash prevention in vehicle-to-vehicle testing.

The main caveat is that the IIHS Top Safety Pick+ result does not apply to the T8 plug-in hybrid.

Should I buy a 2021 Volvo XC90 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2021 if:

• 36.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Accident-free inventory is solid at 80.2% — always verify the vehicle history report.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 17.13% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• Volvo added Care Key, a 112-mph limiter, and new standard tech features for this year.

Consider the 2020 if:

• At $22,010, the 2020 costs less than the current year's $25,695 average.
• It offers the same stylish, safety-focused family-shuttle formula.

Consider the 2022 if:

• At $28,668, the 2022 costs more than the current year's $25,695 average.
• It leans into a more modern, eco-conscious feel with available plug-in hybrid and leather-free features.

The bottom line: If you want the best balance of price, safety, and available inventory, the 2021 is the smart default. If your budget is tighter, the 2020 gives you a similar experience for less money.
