The Volvo XC90 was redesigned in 2016 and refreshed just last year. This year, the XC90 carries over mostly unchanged. This stylish yet practical SUV 7-passenger takes on other 3-row luxury SUVs including the Acura MDX, BMW X5, and Audi Q7.
The XC90 benefits from the same comprehensive exterior design that helps the Volvo fleet establish itself as elegant, yet modern. The side profile is simple, but the front stands out thanks to the distinctive “Thor’s Hammer” LED lighting and the back gets eye-catching Volvo branding across the tailgate.
Similar design elements are put to good use inside the cabin, with a serene layout that enables the luxury and technology features to stand out. The XC90 is available in 6- and 7-seat configurations, and though Volvo hasn’t yet confirmed trim levels for 2021, it’s likely they’ll carry over from last year and include Momentum, R-Design, and Inscription options. Standard features include proximity key entry, a panoramic sunroof, and a hands-free tailgate. Options among the higher trims include upgraded upholstery options, heated and cooled seating, and massaging front seats.
Under the hood, you’ll have the choice of T5, T6, and T8 engines. T5 makes 250 horsepower from a turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder and is available with front-wheel drive (FWD) or all-wheel drive (AWD). T6 is a turbocharged and supercharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder, good for 316 hp, and T8 adds a plug-in hybrid setup for 400 hp. T6 and T8 get standard AWD, and all three get an 8-speed automatic transmission. The best fuel economy numbers come from the FWD T5, at 20 mpg city, 27 highway, and 23 combined, and the T8, rated for 55 MPGe.
The infotainment system includes a 9-inch touchscreen display, a 10-speaker audio system, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, navigation, and satellite radio. A WiFi hot spot, an upgraded navigation system, and upgraded audio systems are available.
The 2020 XC90 earned six Good scores from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and a 5-star overall rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Safety features include a reversing camera, lane-departure warning, lane-keep assist, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring. rear cross-traffic alert, rear parking sensors, automatic emergency braking, driver alertness monitoring, and traffic-sign recognition. Options include a surround-view camera, oncoming lane mitigation, adaptive headlights, and front parking sensors.
Though the XC90 looks much the same as last year, buyers will be hard-pressed to find fault with it. Volvo’s largest SUV is a great choice in its segment.
