CarGurus Analysis: 2021 Volkswagen Tiguan
overall

Summary
With 3,329 currently listed for sale and an average price of $17,605.00, 33.2% of 2021 Volkswagen Tiguans for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2021 Volkswagen Tiguan 4.5 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.33 / 10.
80.4% of 2021 Tiguan models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2021 Volkswagen Tiguan stands out as Volkswagen’s best-selling model, and its appeal is easy to understand. It offers room for five people, available all-wheel drive, and more cargo than any family car, which helps explain why it fits so well with shoppers looking for a practical compact SUV. It is also praised for plenty of cargo space, spaciousness, and easy-to-use technology, all of which make it a straightforward and family-friendly choice.
That practicality comes with a few tradeoffs. The stereo is lacking, and the interior materials feel cheap, so the Tiguan does not project the same sense of polish that some buyers may expect. Even so, its combination of space, useful technology, and everyday versatility gives the 2021 Volkswagen Tiguan a clear identity as a sensible, easy-to-live-with SUV.

We bought this vehicle for our daughter. It is loaded inside and out. She and I did our research on the VW Tiguan. It is technically on par with every high in car on the market. The panoramic sunroof was a must have for her. Our daughter took the test herself. The ease of handling, acceleration and braking were excellent. Before we returned to the dealership we knew this was the right vehicle for her!

Solid SUV - big enough for family, small enough to get decent gas mileage for an AWD. Base model comes with enough features to leave the competition out of the game for similar SUVs.

Despite the what I read about the sluggishness of this model, its STILL a VW (a little speed demon once it gets going). I love all the features of my car (Panoramic sunroof, car play, LCD odometer area, heated seats). I believe I got GREAT VALUE out of this car! No complaints!!!!

| Metric | Value |

| Current Average Price | $17,624 |

| Year-Round High | $19,880.98 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $19,880 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −11.35% |
Prices have softened 11.35% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 3,331 listings available, which suggests you should have a workable selection to compare.
If you find a listing below $17,565.11, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2021 Volkswagen Tiguan a good car?
Yes — the 2021 Volkswagen Tiguan earns a 4.5/5 user rating and a 7.33/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Form and function at 9/10.
Drivers consistently praise its spacious interior, practicality, and easy-to-use technology, and many also point to good fuel economy and family-friendly comfort. The Tiguan’s use-case is straightforward: it is built for you if you want a practical compact SUV with room for people and cargo, plus available all-wheel drive. The main trade-offs are a lackluster stereo and interior materials that can feel cheap, while the expert drive notes some sluggishness in acceleration and a powertrain that can feel breathless when you need quick passing power.
The market backdrop is still favorable, with 34.3% of listings marked as good or great deals.
Is the 2021 Volkswagen Tiguan reliable?
Owners rate it 4.5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The user feedback points to comfort, practicality, and a sense that the Tiguan is a dependable family SUV you can count on for everyday use. The expert drive also supports that impression by describing the SUV as quiet and composed on the highway, with a refined, easygoing character in daily driving. Volkswagen’s Carefree Coverage adds some ownership reassurance with free scheduled maintenance for two years or 20,000 miles, plus roadside assistance and warranty coverage.
For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is less about outright durability than about whether the specific vehicle has been maintained well and used gently.
What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Volkswagen Tiguan?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 80.2% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still run a history report on any candidate, even if the listing looks clean at first glance. Prioritize a pre-purchase inspection that checks the drivetrain, electronics, and interior condition, since those are the areas where wear and ownership shortcuts can show up fastest. Focus especially on how the cabin has held up, whether the tech works smoothly, and whether the vehicle has any signs of prior damage or poor repair work.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The lineup includes S, SE, SEL, SE R-Line Black, and SEL Premium R-Line. The base S misses some of the added convenience and safety equipment found higher up, while the SEL Premium R-Line adds the most upscale tech and driver-assistance content.
- Powertrain: Every model uses a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder with 184 horsepower and 221 pound-feet of torque, paired with an eight-speed automatic. It is efficient enough for the class, but turbo lag and modest passing power are worth evaluating on a test drive.
- Safety package: IQ Drive is standard and includes forward-collision warning, pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert. Adaptive cruise control starts with SE, lane-departure warning with lane-keep assist starts with SEL, and automatic high-beam headlights are reserved for SEL Premium R-Line.
- Infotainment: MIB3 starts with SE and brings an 8-inch touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, faster response times, and connected services. Higher trims add more display and audio upgrades, including Volkswagen Digital Cockpit on SEL and SEL Premium R-Line.
- Fuel efficiency: EPA estimates are 25 mpg combined with front-wheel drive and 24 mpg with AWD. In testing, the AWD model averaged 22.6 mpg.
Which 2021 Volkswagen Tiguan trim should I buy?
The 2021 Volkswagen Tiguan is offered in 5 trim levels: S, SE, SEL, SE R-Line Black, and SEL Premium R-Line.
Here's the short version:
- Base trim: The S gives you the Tiguan’s core space and safety package, but it misses adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, and the richer infotainment setup that starts higher in the lineup.
- Sweet-spot trim: The SE is the best value pick because it adds MIB3 with an 8-inch touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and adaptive cruise control.
- Premium/top trim: The SEL Premium R-Line is the most fully equipped choice, adding the most advanced safety and tech content, plus the premium audio system and surround-view camera.
- Off-road trim: None of the trims are aimed at off-road use, so you should focus on daily-driving value instead.
The SEL trim is the key safety-package step because it adds lane-departure warning with lane-keep assist, while SEL Premium R-Line adds automatic high-beam headlights and the top camera setup.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Volkswagen Tiguan?
This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile deals.
- Deal availability: 34.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 3,331 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 11.35% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 80.2% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $17,565.11, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2021 Volkswagen Tiguan's resale value?
The current average of $17,624 sits slightly below last year's $19,880.
That price movement suggests the Tiguan has already absorbed a meaningful amount of depreciation, which can help future resale stability if you buy at the right price. If you purchase near the lower end of the current range, you may have less downside left than someone who paid closer to the prior-year average. Strong demand for practical, family-friendly SUVs should also help keep interest steady when it is time to sell.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2021 Volkswagen Tiguan safe?
The 2021 Tiguan earns a Top Safety Pick rating from IIHS in SEL and SEL Premium R-Line specification.
It earns a 8/10 safety score from our experts.
Volkswagen’s IQ Drive suite is standard and includes forward-collision warning, pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert. Adaptive cruise control starts with SE trim, lane-departure warning with lane-keep assist starts with SEL, and automatic high-beam headlights are standard on SEL Premium R-Line. Front and rear parking sensors are included on all but the S and SE, and the top trim also adds a surround-view camera.
One caveat is that the IIHS Top Safety Pick result applies only to SEL and SEL Premium R-Line because of their high-performing LED headlights, so lower trims do not get the same recognition.
Should I buy a 2021 Volkswagen Tiguan or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2021 if:
- 34.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 80.2% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 11.35% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2021 adds MIB3 infotainment and keeps the Tiguan’s roomy, practical formula.
Consider the 2020 if:
- At $16,155, the 2020 costs less than the current year's $17,624 average.
- It emphasizes three-row seating and extra passenger capacity.
Consider the 2022 if:
- At $20,854, the 2022 costs more than the current year's $17,624 average.
- It adds a refresh with new safety technology and a stronger value-and-safety pitch.
The bottom line: If you want the best balance of price, space, and modern tech, the 2021 is the smart default. If your budget is tighter, the 2020 can save you money while keeping the Tiguan’s core practicality. If you want the newer safety-focused refresh and can spend more, the 2022 is the better upgrade path.
