CarGurus Analysis: 2021 Volkswagen ID.4
overall

Summary
With 258 currently listed for sale and an average price of $19,285, 38.8% of 2021 Volkswagen ID.4s for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2021 Volkswagen ID.4 4.7 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.33 / 10.
88.0% of 2021 ID.4 models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2021 Volkswagen ID.4 is Volkswagen’s first EV aimed at mainstream buyers, and that alone makes it distinctive. It was positioned as a nationwide electric crossover, with Volkswagen viewing it as a rival to mainstream gasoline vehicles rather than only to other EVs. The ID.4 also marked a major shift for the brand after the Dieselgate scandal pushed Volkswagen to focus more heavily on electric cars.
What stands out most about the 2021 Volkswagen ID.4 is the way it blends everyday usability with EV advantages. The test-drive data highlights a quiet cabin, fuel efficiency, and standard advanced safety features, all of which support its appeal as a practical family-oriented crossover. Owners also praise its performance, comfort, smooth driving experience, and spacious interior, reinforcing the idea that it is designed to feel familiar and easy to live with.
That said, the 2021 Volkswagen ID.4 is not without drawbacks. The test-drive data calls out unimpressive electric range, unintuitive technology, and poor visibility, while some owners mention concerns about backup camera reliability and battery drainage in colder conditions. Those limitations matter, but they do not change the ID.4’s core appeal: it is Volkswagen’s first serious attempt to bring an electric crossover to a broad audience.

I own two VW id4s. First was ID4 pro FWD which got stuck in just a hint of snow and therefore was not a good choice for me. Next was ID 4 base model AWD, which is awesome and can drive through 6 in of wet crusty snow with no problem at all. There are not very many AWD EVs out there, so I think this is an incredible choice. I was lucky to get one! To be fair the FWD car had all season tires, whereas the car I drove in todays snow does have winter tires. I do think the all-wheel drive has more to do with it than the snow tires. In any case the AWD ID 4 is a real winter winner! 4 stars only because some of the safety features become annoying, for instance if I turn around in my seat for better visibility while I back up the car refuses to go. And the backup camera and warning system is not as reliable as actually looking behind me

Love the car. Really was hoping it had turn signal cameras and displayed the tire pressure numbers for each tire. Otherwise pretty great!

This car is awesome. Super smooth, easy handling, like a spaceship, quiet and fun to drive. The features include seat massagers, a heated steering wheel, and a wireless phone charger. It is an excellent value for an EV in this market. If I had to add something, Id add more options for the tires and wheels. I dont love the shoes it comes with. Test drive one and youll fall in love!

The user summary also points to a quiet cabin, smooth driving experience, and a generally dependable ownership experience, while the expert notes emphasize that Volkswagen aimed to make the ID.4 feel familiar for drivers coming from gasoline cars. That same familiar setup can help reduce the learning curve for long-term ownership.
Volkswagen also includes an eight-year, 100,000-mile battery warranty, which is a meaningful cushion for used-EV buyers. Even so, you should still check battery health carefully, since real-world range and charging habits can affect how confident you feel about keeping the car for the long haul.
What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Volkswagen ID.4?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 87.6% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still run a history report, prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, and pay close attention to battery condition, charging behavior, and any signs of software or camera-related issues. Because this is an EV, it’s especially smart to confirm how the car was charged and whether its range still feels consistent with expectations.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base ID.4 Pro comes with a leather-wrapped steering wheel and cloth seats, while the Pro S and 1st Edition add leatherette upholstery. That makes the higher trims feel more upscale, but the base trim still covers the essentials.
- Powertrain: At launch, the ID.4 used a single rear-mounted electric motor with 201 horsepower and 229 pound-feet of torque; AWD versions add a second motor and increase output to 295 horsepower and 339 pound-feet of torque. The rear-drive setup is balanced and smooth, while AWD adds stronger acceleration.
- Safety package: Standard driver aids include forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, lane-keep assist, park distance control, automatic high beams, adaptive cruise control, Travel Assist, and Emergency Assist. Travel Assist is standard, which is a useful advantage if you want highway-driving support without stepping up to a pricier package.
- Infotainment: The standard setup uses a 10-inch touchscreen, with a 12-inch screen optional, plus wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. It also includes a 5.3-inch instrument display and over-the-air capability is not stated here.
- Range & charging: The base RWD ID.4 Pro has a 260-mile range, while the RWD Pro S and 1st Edition have a 250-mile range. AWD Pro trims are rated at 249 miles, and AWD Pro S trims at 240 miles. Standard DC fast charging can take the battery from 5% to 80% in 38 minutes, and the usable battery capacity is 82 kilowatt-hours.
- Battery health: For a used EV, you should check battery state-of-health, confirm whether the car was mostly charged at home or relied heavily on DC fast charging, and review how much of the battery warranty remains. A healthy battery should still deliver predictable range and consistent charging performance.
Which 2021 Volkswagen ID.4 trim should I buy?
The 2021 Volkswagen ID.4 is offered in 4 trim levels: Pro, Pro S, AWD Pro, AWD Pro S.
Here's the short version:
- Pro: This is the least expensive way into the ID.4, and it gives you the core EV experience with the strongest value focus. If you want the lowest entry price and can live without the extra upscale touches, this is the one to start with.
- Pro S: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds a more premium feel with leatherette upholstery while keeping the ID.4’s standard safety and tech strengths. If you want the most balanced mix of equipment and price, this is the trim to target.
- AWD Pro: Choose this if you want the added traction and stronger output of the dual-motor setup without moving all the way up the range. It’s the right pick if you care more about performance and all-weather confidence than luxury extras.
- AWD Pro S: This is the most fully equipped version in the lineup, combining AWD power with the more upscale Pro S treatment. It makes sense if you want the strongest feature set and don’t mind paying more for it.
Travel Assist is standard, so you don’t need to move up the lineup just to get that driver-assistance feature.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Volkswagen ID.4?
This is a moderate market, so you can shop selectively without expecting a deep bargain on every listing.
- Deal availability: 32.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 258 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 8.94% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 87.6% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $17,887, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2021 Volkswagen ID.4's resale value?
The current average of $19,217 sits slightly below last year's $21,104.
That decline suggests the ID.4 has become more affordable for used buyers, which can make it easier for future sellers to attract interest if pricing stays realistic. The current range also shows that the market is still active enough to support transactions, but not so hot that you should expect rapid appreciation.
For you as a seller, that means condition, mileage, and battery health will matter a lot when it’s time to list. A clean history and strong presentation should help you stand out in a market where buyers have choices.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.7/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2021 Volkswagen ID.4 safe?
The 2021 Volkswagen ID.4 earns the IIHS Top Safety Pick+ designation and five-star ratings from NHTSA in its crash tests.
It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.
The standard safety suite includes forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, lane-keep assist, park distance control, automatic high beams, adaptive cruise control, Travel Assist, and Emergency Assist. Travel Assist adds automated lane centering, and Emergency Assist is designed to bring the car to a stop if the driver is incapacitated.
One caveat is that the NHTSA testing cited here applies to the rear-wheel-drive version, not the AWD model. That means you should still pay attention to the exact drivetrain on any used listing you’re considering.
Should I buy a 2021 Volkswagen ID.4 or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2021 if:
- 32.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 87.6% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 8.94% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.7/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2021 ID.4 stands out as Volkswagen’s first mainstream EV crossover, with standard advanced safety tech and a nationwide launch strategy.
The bottom line: If you want the earliest ID.4 and you value its combination of comfort, standard safety tech, and mainstream EV packaging, the 2021 is a sensible choice. If you’re especially price-sensitive, focus on the best-condition examples and compare them carefully against later model years to see whether the extra money buys you a better fit.
