CarGurus Analysis: 2021 Volkswagen ID.4
overall

Summary
With 249 currently listed for sale and an average price of $19,824.00, 35.3% of 2021 Volkswagen ID.4s for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2021 Volkswagen ID.4 4.7 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.33 / 10.
89.2% of 2021 ID.4 models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
Volkswagen’s first EV aimed at mainstream buyers, the 2021 Volkswagen ID.4, stands out as the brand’s push to make electric driving feel more familiar and broadly accessible. It is described as a reasonably priced electric crossover, and Volkswagen positions it against mainstream gasoline SUVs rather than only against other EVs. The ID.4 also marks a more serious nationwide effort for the brand, with availability across the country and Tennessee production beginning in 2022.
In testing, the ID.4’s appeal centered on its quiet cabin, fuel efficiency, and standard advanced safety features. Those strengths make it easy to see why it would attract shoppers looking for a calm, practical daily driver with EV benefits. At the same time, the car is not without drawbacks: its electric range is unimpressive, its technology is unintuitive, and visibility is poor. Owners also tend to praise its performance, comfort, design, and spacious interior, while some mention concerns about backup camera reliability and battery drainage in colder conditions.

I own two VW id4s. First was ID4 pro FWD which got stuck in just a hint of snow and therefore was not a good choice for me. Next was ID 4 base model AWD, which is awesome and can drive through 6 in of wet crusty snow with no problem at all. There are not very many AWD EVs out there, so I think this is an incredible choice. I was lucky to get one! To be fair the FWD car had all season tires, whereas the car I drove in todays snow does have winter tires. I do think the all-wheel drive has more to do with it than the snow tires. In any case the AWD ID 4 is a real winter winner! 4 stars only because some of the safety features become annoying, for instance if I turn around in my seat for better visibility while I back up the car refuses to go. And the backup camera and warning system is not as reliable as actually looking behind me

Love the car. Really was hoping it had turn signal cameras and displayed the tire pressure numbers for each tire. Otherwise pretty great!

This car is awesome. Super smooth, easy handling, like a spaceship, quiet and fun to drive. The features include seat massagers, a heated steering wheel, and a wireless phone charger. It is an excellent value for an EV in this market. If I had to add something, Id add more options for the tires and wheels. I dont love the shoes it comes with. Test drive one and youll fall in love!

How much does the 2021 Volkswagen ID.4 cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $19,670 |
| Year-Round Low | $17,987.39 |
| Year-Round High | $21,397.01 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $21,395 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −8.06% |
Prices have softened 8.06% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 257 listings available, which suggests you have some room to compare prices and condition across the market.
If you find a listing below $17,987.39, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2021 Volkswagen ID.4 a good car?
Yes — the 2021 Volkswagen ID.4 earns a 4.7/5 user rating and a 7.33/10 expert rating. The model scores 8/10 across Look and feel and Performance.
Owners repeatedly praise its quiet cabin, smooth driving experience, and spacious interior, and they also like its performance, comfort, and design. On the downside, the expert review points to unimpressive electric range and unintuitive technology, while the overview also flags poor visibility.
For you, that makes the ID.4 a strong fit if you want a calm, practical EV crossover that feels familiar in daily use rather than overly futuristic. It looks like a mainstream family vehicle, and the market still shows 32.7% good or great deals, which gives you some negotiating leverage.
Is the 2021 Volkswagen ID.4 reliable?
Owners rate it 4.7/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner summary also points to a smooth driving experience, quiet cabin, and spacious interior, which are the kinds of traits people tend to associate with a dependable daily driver. The expert review adds that Volkswagen aimed to make the ID.4 feel familiar to drivers coming from gasoline cars, and the standard charging setup plus long battery coverage help support confidence in ownership.
For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about outright durability and more about how the battery, electronics, and charging behavior have aged in real-world use.
What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Volkswagen ID.4?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 88.3% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still check the history report carefully, because even a strong accident-free share does not replace a clean individual record. Prioritize a pre-purchase inspection that focuses on the battery, charging equipment, software behavior, and any signs of uneven wear or repair. Since owners mention backup camera reliability and battery drainage in colder conditions, pay close attention to how the car behaves in everyday use.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base Pro trim uses cloth seats and a leather-wrapped steering wheel, while the Pro S and 1st Edition add leatherette upholstery. The higher trims also bring more upscale presentation, so you should compare comfort and convenience equipment carefully if you want the best value.
- Powertrain: The ID.4 launched with a single rear-mounted electric motor making 201 horsepower and 229 pound-feet of torque, and an all-wheel-drive version later added a second motor for 295 horsepower and 339 pound-feet of torque. The rear-drive setup is the more efficient, familiar-feeling choice, while AWD adds traction and stronger acceleration.
- Safety package: Standard driver aids include forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, lane-keep assist, park distance control, automatic high beams, adaptive cruise control, Travel Assist, and Emergency Assist. Travel Assist adds automated lane centering, and the standard suite is a major strength across the lineup.
- Infotainment: The standard setup uses a 10-inch touchscreen, with a 12-inch screen optional, plus wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. It also includes a 5.3-inch instrument display and over-the-air capability is not stated here, so focus on how well the controls work for you in a test drive.
- Range & charging: The rear-drive Pro S and 1st Edition have a 250-mile EPA-estimated range and an 82-kWh battery pack, while the base rear-drive Pro reaches 260 miles. DC fast charging can take the battery from 5% to 80% in 38 minutes.
- Battery health: On a used EV, you should ask for battery state-of-health information, review charging habits, and confirm whether the car has mostly been charged at home or relied heavily on DC fast charging. Also check how much of the eight-year, 100,000-mile battery warranty remains.
Which 2021 Volkswagen ID.4 trim should I buy?
The 2021 Volkswagen ID.4 is offered in 4 trim levels: Pro, Pro S, AWD Pro, AWD Pro S.
Here's the short version:
- Pro: This is the best-value starting point if you want the ID.4’s core EV experience at the lowest entry price. You still get the standard safety suite, the 10-inch touchscreen, wireless smartphone integration, and the rear-drive setup that delivers the longest range in the lineup.
- Pro S: This is the trim to focus on if you want a more upscale cabin, since it adds leatherette upholstery and a richer feel without changing the ID.4’s basic mission. It makes sense if comfort and presentation matter more to you than stretching every dollar.
- AWD Pro: Choose this if you want all-wheel drive and stronger output, since it adds a second motor and more power while keeping the trim relatively straightforward. It is the better pick if you live where traction matters.
- AWD Pro S: This is the most fully equipped version in the lineup, combining the upscale Pro S cabin with AWD performance. It suits you if you want the most complete package and are willing to pay for it.
Travel Assist and Emergency Assist are standard, so even the lower trims get a strong safety package.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Volkswagen ID.4?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you can shop carefully without expecting every listing to be a bargain.
- Deal availability: 32.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 257 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 8.06% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 88.3% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $17,987.39, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2021 Volkswagen ID.4's resale value?
The current average of $19,670 sits slightly below last year's $21,395.
That decline suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can make the ID.4 more attractive to buyers today but less favorable for a seller trying to maximize return. If you own one, pricing it competitively will matter, especially because shoppers can compare against a decent pool of listings. The good news is that strong demand for well-liked EVs can help support values when the car has a clean history and solid condition.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.7/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2021 Volkswagen ID.4 safe?
The 2021 Volkswagen ID.4 earns the IIHS's Top Safety Pick+ designation, and the RWD version earns five-star ratings from NHTSA in its crash tests.
It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.
Standard driver assistance includes forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, lane-keep assist, park distance control, automatic high beams, adaptive cruise control, Travel Assist, and Emergency Assist. Travel Assist adds automated lane centering and is standard, which is a meaningful advantage for highway driving.
One caveat is that NHTSA has not tested the AWD version, so if you are shopping that configuration, you should rely more heavily on the equipment list and the vehicle’s condition than on a direct crash-test result for that drivetrain.
Should I buy a 2021 Volkswagen ID.4 or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2021 if:
- 32.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 88.3% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 8.06% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.7/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2021 stands out as Volkswagen’s first mainstream EV push, with nationwide availability and standard advanced safety features.
The bottom line: If you want the strongest mix of price, owner satisfaction, and standard safety equipment, the 2021 is the one to target. If you are especially price-sensitive, focus on the lower end of the market range and compare condition closely, because the ID.4’s value depends heavily on finding a clean, well-kept example with the right trim and battery history.
