CarGurus Analysis: 2021 Volkswagen ID.4
overall

Summary
With 252 currently listed for sale and an average price of $19,478.00, 36.1% of 2021 Volkswagen ID.4s for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2021 Volkswagen ID.4 4.7 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.33 / 10.
87.3% of 2021 ID.4 models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
Volkswagen’s first EV aimed at mainstream buyers, the 2021 Volkswagen ID.4, stands out as the brand’s push to make electric driving feel more familiar and broadly accessible. It is described as a reasonably priced electric crossover, and Volkswagen positions it against mainstream gasoline SUVs rather than only against other EVs. The ID.4 also marks a more serious nationwide effort for the brand, with availability across the country and Tennessee production beginning in 2022.
In testing, the ID.4’s appeal centered on its quiet cabin, fuel efficiency, and standard advanced safety features. Those strengths make it easy to see why it would attract shoppers looking for a calm, practical daily driver with EV benefits. At the same time, the car is not without drawbacks: its electric range is unimpressive, its technology is unintuitive, and visibility is poor. Owners also tend to praise its performance, comfort, design, and spacious interior, while some mention concerns about backup camera reliability and battery drainage in colder conditions.

I own two VW id4s. First was ID4 pro FWD which got stuck in just a hint of snow and therefore was not a good choice for me. Next was ID 4 base model AWD, which is awesome and can drive through 6 in of wet crusty snow with no problem at all. There are not very many AWD EVs out there, so I think this is an incredible choice. I was lucky to get one! To be fair the FWD car had all season tires, whereas the car I drove in todays snow does have winter tires. I do think the all-wheel drive has more to do with it than the snow tires. In any case the AWD ID 4 is a real winter winner! 4 stars only because some of the safety features become annoying, for instance if I turn around in my seat for better visibility while I back up the car refuses to go. And the backup camera and warning system is not as reliable as actually looking behind me

Love the car. Really was hoping it had turn signal cameras and displayed the tire pressure numbers for each tire. Otherwise pretty great!

This car is awesome. Super smooth, easy handling, like a spaceship, quiet and fun to drive. The features include seat massagers, a heated steering wheel, and a wireless phone charger. It is an excellent value for an EV in this market. If I had to add something, Id add more options for the tires and wheels. I dont love the shoes it comes with. Test drive one and youll fall in love!

How much does the 2021 Volkswagen ID.4 cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $19,347 |
| Year-Round Low | $17,901.19 |
| Year-Round High | $21,298.66 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $21,305 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −9.19% |
Prices have softened 9.19% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 264 listings available, which suggests you have some room to compare prices and equipment.
If you find a listing below $17,901.19, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2021 Volkswagen ID.4 a good car?
Yes — the 2021 Volkswagen ID.4 earns a 4.7/5 user rating and a 7.33/10 expert rating. The model scores 8/10 across Look and feel and Performance.
Owners consistently praise its quiet cabin, smooth driving experience, and spacious interior, and they also like its performance, comfort, and design. That lines up with Volkswagen’s goal of making electric driving feel familiar and broadly accessible, especially if you want a calm daily driver with EV benefits.
The trade-offs are clear: the expert review calls out unimpressive electric range and unintuitive technology, and visibility is also a weak point. In practical terms, this is a strong fit if you value comfort, space, and a mainstream crossover feel more than cutting-edge EV polish.
With 39.0% of listings marked as good or great deals, there’s enough market activity to keep shopping selectively.
Is the 2021 Volkswagen ID.4 reliable?
Owners rate it 4.7/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner summary points to a vehicle that feels smooth, quiet, and comfortable, with many drivers describing it as an excellent EV option. That kind of feedback matters because it suggests the ID.4 delivers a dependable day-to-day experience rather than just a good first impression.
The expert review also emphasizes that Volkswagen built this EV to feel familiar for drivers coming from gasoline cars, which can make ownership easier if you want a low-stress transition to electric driving. Volkswagen also includes three years of charging on the Electrify America network, which can help reduce early ownership friction.
For used buyers, the main long-term risk is making sure the battery, charging behavior, and electronics have aged well, since EV ownership depends heavily on those systems.
What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Volkswagen ID.4?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 88.3% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still check the history report carefully, because accident-free status does not replace a proper inspection. Focus on the condition of the battery, charging equipment, infotainment controls, and any driver-assistance features that may have been used heavily. Since some owners mention backup camera reliability and battery drainage in colder conditions, those are worth paying attention to during a test drive.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base ID.4 Pro includes a leather-wrapped steering wheel and cloth seats, while the Pro S and 1st Edition add leatherette upholstery. The base trim also misses some of the more upscale presentation you’ll find higher up the range.
- Powertrain: At launch, the ID.4 used a single rear-mounted electric motor with 201 horsepower and 229 pound-feet of torque; AWD versions add a second motor up front and increase output to 295 horsepower and 339 pound-feet of torque. The rear-drive setup is balanced and easy to live with, while AWD adds stronger acceleration and traction.
- Safety package: The standard suite includes forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, lane-keep assist, park distance control, automatic high beams, adaptive cruise control, Travel Assist, and Emergency Assist. Travel Assist is standard, which is a meaningful advantage if you want advanced driver assistance without paying extra.
- Infotainment: The standard system uses a 10-inch touchscreen, with a 12-inch screen optional, plus wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. It also includes a 5.3-inch instrument display and over-the-air-style connected features are not described here, so focus on how the system works in person.
- Range & charging: The RWD Pro S and 1st Edition are rated at 250 miles of range, the base RWD Pro at 260 miles, the AWD Pro at 249 miles, and the AWD Pro S at 240 miles. DC fast charging can take the battery from 5% to 80% in 38 minutes, and the battery pack is covered by a separate eight-year, 100,000-mile warranty.
- Battery health: Ask for battery state-of-health information, review charging habits, and confirm whether the car has mostly been charged at home or relied heavily on DC fast charging. You should also check how much of the battery warranty remains and make sure the car charges normally during a test drive.
Which 2021 Volkswagen ID.4 trim should I buy?
The 2021 Volkswagen ID.4 is offered in 4 trim levels: Pro, Pro S, AWD Pro, AWD Pro S.
Here's the short version:
- Pro: This is the value play if you want the lowest entry price and the longest listed range at 260 miles. It gives you the core ID.4 experience, including the standard safety suite and the familiar rear-drive setup.
- Pro S: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds a more upscale cabin with leatherette upholstery while keeping the same basic formula. If you want a nicer feel without jumping to AWD, this is the trim to focus on.
- AWD Pro: Choose this if you want the added traction and stronger output of the dual-motor setup, plus a still-reasonable price relative to the top trim. It’s the right middle ground if you live where all-weather confidence matters.
- AWD Pro S: This is the most fully equipped version in the lineup, pairing AWD performance with the richer Pro S cabin. Buy this if you want the most complete ID.4 experience and are willing to pay for it.
Travel Assist is standard, so you do not need to move up the range just to get that driver-assistance feature.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Volkswagen ID.4?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.
- Deal availability: 39.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 264 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 9.19% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 88.3% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $17,901.19, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2021 Volkswagen ID.4's resale value?
The current average of $19,347 sits slightly below last year's $21,305.
That decline suggests the market has moved in buyers’ favor, which can make the ID.4 easier to purchase now but may also mean sellers need to price competitively. If you buy at today’s softer levels, you may have less immediate depreciation pressure than someone who bought when prices were higher.
For a future seller, the key question is whether the ID.4’s strong feature set and broad appeal can support demand over time. Its standard safety tech, roomy cabin, and mainstream crossover positioning should help, but resale will still depend on condition, mileage, and battery health.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.7/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2021 Volkswagen ID.4 safe?
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has awarded the 2021 Volkswagen ID.4 its highest-level Top Safety Pick+ designation, and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) gave the RWD ID.4 five out of five stars in its battery of crash tests.
It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.
The standard driver-assistance suite includes forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, lane-keep assist, park distance control, automatic high beams, adaptive cruise control, Travel Assist, and Emergency Assist. Travel Assist adds automated lane centering, and Emergency Assist is designed to bring the car to a stop if it detects that the driver is incapacitated.
One caveat is that the NHTSA did not test the AWD ID.4, so the published crash result applies specifically to the rear-drive version.
Should I buy a 2021 Volkswagen ID.4 or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2021 if:
- 39.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 88.3% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 9.19% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.7/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2021 stands out for its standard advanced safety features and its role as Volkswagen’s first mainstream EV push.
The bottom line: If you want the earliest ID.4 with broad availability, strong owner satisfaction, and a softer used-car price, the 2021 is the one to target. If you’re especially price-sensitive, keep shopping the market for the best-condition example with the battery and charging system you want, because the biggest ownership differences will come down to trim, drivetrain, and how well the car has been maintained.
