What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid?

Accident-free inventory is solid at 80.9% — always verify the vehicle history report.

You should still check the history report carefully, because accident-free listings are common but not guaranteed. A pre-purchase inspection is worth prioritizing, especially if you want to catch wear items, tire condition, or any signs of interior rattles and trim issues. Focus on overall condition, feature operation, and whether the vehicle has been maintained regularly.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The lineup ranges from LE to Limited, and the higher trims add more comfort and convenience. The XLE Premium is the notable new addition for this year, bringing a super chrome wheel finish, a power sunroof, SofTex leatherette upholstery, and dual-zone automatic climate control. Base versions miss some of the nicer touches, while the Limited is the most fully equipped.
• Powertrain: You get a 2.5-liter four-cylinder gas engine paired with front and rear electric motors and a lithium-ion battery pack. The setup produces 219 horsepower and standard AWD, with driving modes including Eco, Normal, Sport, Trail, and EV.
• Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard and includes adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go capability, forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, forward automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keep assist, lane-centering assist, automatic high beams, and road-sign recognition. Blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic warning are standard on all but the Hybrid LE, and rear automatic braking is exclusive to the Hybrid Limited.
• Infotainment: The RAV4 Hybrid uses either a 7-inch or 8-inch touchscreen. Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Amazon Alexa compatibility, SiriusXM satellite radio, Safety Connect, and WiFi Connect are standard, and the system can be paired with an 11-speaker JBL premium audio setup on higher-spec versions.
• Fuel efficiency: The EPA says it returns 40 mpg in combined driving, and the expert test loop returned 39.7 mpg. Toyota says the hybrid can save you about 10 to 12 miles per gallon versus the standard AWD version.

Which 2021 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid trim should I buy?

The 2021 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid is offered in 5 trim levels: LE, XLE, XLE Premium, XSE, and Limited.

Here's the short version:

• LE: This is the entry point, so it makes the most sense if you want the hybrid’s core efficiency, standard AWD, and full safety suite at the lowest price. It’s the value play, but you give up some of the nicer comfort and convenience upgrades found higher up the range.
• XLE: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds more everyday comfort and convenience without jumping all the way to the top of the lineup. If you want a balanced mix of equipment and price, this is the one to focus on.
• XLE Premium: This trim is the standout new addition for the year, and it adds a super chrome wheel finish, a power sunroof, SofTex leatherette upholstery, and dual-zone automatic climate control. Choose it if you want a more upscale feel without going all the way to the Limited.
• XSE: This is the sportier choice, with a sport-tuned suspension for a firmer feel. It suits you best if you want a more responsive setup and don’t mind the same tire limitations noted in testing.
• Limited: This is the most fully equipped version, and it’s the one to choose if you want the most features and the best available headlight performance. It also gets rear automatic braking, which is exclusive to this trim.

Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard across the lineup, while blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic warning are missing on the Hybrid LE.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid?

• Deal availability: 37.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 2,311 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have held steady compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 80.9% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $26,740, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2021 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid's resale value?

The current average of $28,487 sits slightly above last year's $28,361.

That small increase suggests the market has stayed stable rather than swinging sharply in either direction. For you, that usually means resale values are being supported by steady demand instead of short-term hype.

Because prices have held firm, a well-kept example should remain relatively easy to position later if you decide to sell. Strong efficiency, standard AWD, and broad appeal all help keep this model relevant in the used market.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.82/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2021 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid safe?

The 2021 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid earns an overall rating of five stars from NHTSA, and the IIHS gives it top marks in all assessments except for its headlights.

It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard, and it includes adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go capability, forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, forward automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keep assist, lane-centering assist, automatic high beams, and road-sign recognition. Blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic warning are standard on all but the Hybrid LE, and rear automatic braking is reserved for the Hybrid Limited.

One caveat is that the lane-centering assistance can feel overly assertive, and the adaptive cruise control may leave more space than you expect in traffic. The IIHS headlight result is also a weak spot, with only the Limited’s adaptive front headlights earning a top Good review.

Should I buy a 2021 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2021 if:

• 37.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Accident-free inventory is solid at 80.9% — always verify the vehicle history report.
• Price trend: Prices have held steady compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.82/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It adds the new XLE Premium trim and keeps the hybrid’s strong efficiency, standard AWD, and broad safety coverage.

Consider the 2020 if:

• At $26,966, the 2020 costs less than the current year's $28,487 average.
• It offers standard all-wheel drive and strong efficiency.

The 2021 is the better pick if you want the newer trim mix, strong owner satisfaction, and a stable market with plenty of listings to compare. If your priority is simply spending less up front, the 2020 is the more budget-friendly path and still delivers the core RAV4 Hybrid formula.
