Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2021 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid 4.82 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it an 8.5 / 10.

Why it stands out
The 2021 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid stands out as the version to buy if you want a compact crossover SUV that is both more powerful and more efficient than the regular model, unless you specifically want the rugged Adventure or TRD Off-Road versions. It also has a stylish design, standard all-wheel drive, and a reputation for strong fuel economy, which helps explain why it appeals to buyers looking for a practical daily driver with lower running costs.
Toyota offers the 2021 RAV4 Hybrid in LE, XLE, XLE Premium, XSE, and Limited trim levels, with pricing ranging from $28,650 to $37,180 before a $1,175 destination charge that can vary by region. The XLE Premium trim is new for the 2021 model year and adds a super chrome wheel finish, a power sunroof, SofTex leatherette upholstery, and dual-zone automatic climate control. That said, the stereo is a weak point, and some drivers also wish for more available features such as standard navigation and power seats.

This is the best car I have ever owned, hands down. In addition to the wealth of features that make my long commute easier, the gas mileage cannot be beat. I fill up once a week. It is smooth and comfortable. I love the adaptive cruise control and the steer assist. I live in an area that gets a lot of snow and I trust its ability to get me safely to where I’m going in any weather. It self corrected last winter when the roads were icy. This was on a bridge and other cars were fishtailing all over, but my RAV corrected itself, drove straight, and I swear it saved me from an accident. Also, the pick up when getting on the highway is superb. It is comfortable and at 103,000 miles mine is still going strong. It’s been off road, in the mountains, all over the streets of NYC, and is my daily commuting car. Right now with its current high mileage I’d drive my RAV4 Hybrid to Alaska and back and wouldn’t worry at all about it. It runs just as well as the day I drove it off the lot with 11 miles on the odometer. I keep my cars a long time and I fully expect it to get to 300,000 miles. Take care of the maintenance and you won’t go wrong with a RAV 4 Hybrid.

This car (in the color lunar rock) is beautiful and sporty, comfortably roomy, gets great gas mileage, and has amazing safety features. I was in a rollover in my first Rav4, and came out with barely a scratch. Already a repeat customer of the Rav4 Hybrid XLE. It literally saved my life.

I compared the RAV4 hybrid to every model in its class. I bought the limited because of its features. The base hybrid models felt cheap compared to the nicer appointed models which coupled with the strong gas mileage made it a no brainer. I am extremely happy with choice. Do yourself a favor and shop around for a good deal.

| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $28,813 |
| Year-Round Low | $26,741 |
| Year-Round High | $29,241 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $28,695 |
| Change vs. Last Year | +0.41% |
Prices have held steady compared to this time last year, signaling a stable and predictable market for this model year.
There are 2,349 listings available, which suggests you should have a reasonable amount of inventory to compare.
Is the 2021 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid a good car?
Yes — 4.82/5 owners rate it highly, and the expert rating is 8.5/10. The standout strength is Cost effectiveness at 10/10.
Drivers consistently praise its excellent gas mileage, spacious interior, and strong performance in different conditions. The review summary also points to reliability and safety as recurring positives, along with the appeal of having plenty of features in the higher trim levels.
The trade-offs are familiar ones: some shoppers want more standard navigation and power seats, and the stereo is a weak point. For you, that means this is a practical daily driver if you value efficiency, utility, and low running costs more than premium audio or a fully loaded base setup.
Good and great deals account for 35.0% of listings, which gives you some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2021 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid reliable?
Owners rate it 4.82/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The review summary points to reliability directly, and it also frames the vehicle as a dependable choice that owners feel good about living with over time. The expert evaluation reinforces that theme by describing the model as a vehicle you can buy, drive for what seems like forever, and save money in the long run.
Toyota also includes two years or 25,000 miles of free scheduled maintenance, which helps reduce early ownership costs. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about the hybrid system itself and more about finding a well-kept example with consistent maintenance and no hidden wear.
What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 82.1% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still check the history report carefully, because a clean listing percentage does not replace a proper vehicle-by-vehicle review. Prioritize a pre-purchase inspection if you’re considering a higher-mileage example or one with incomplete service records. Focus on overall condition, interior wear, tire condition, and whether the features you care about are actually present on the trim you’re looking at.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The lineup includes LE, XLE, XLE Premium, XSE, and Limited. The LE is the most basic version, while the XLE Premium adds a super chrome wheel finish, a power sunroof, SofTex leatherette upholstery, and dual-zone automatic climate control. If you want the best value, the XLE Premium is the trim that most clearly adds desirable comfort features without jumping all the way to the top of the range.
- Powertrain: Toyota pairs a 2.5-liter four-cylinder gas engine with front and rear electric motors and a lithium-ion battery pack. The hybrid system makes 219 horsepower, and the rear electric motor gives the SUV standard AWD. It also returns 40 mpg in combined driving, with the test loop averaging 39.7 mpg.
- Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard and includes adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go capability, forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, forward automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keep assist, lane-centering assist, automatic high-beam headlights, and road-sign recognition. Blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic warning are standard on all but the Hybrid LE, and rear automatic braking is exclusive to the Hybrid Limited.
- Infotainment: The RAV4 Hybrid uses either a 7-inch or 8-inch touchscreen, and all versions include Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Amazon Alexa compatibility, and SiriusXM satellite radio. Connected services are also standard, and the top system adds an 11-speaker JBL premium audio setup plus dynamic navigation.
- Fuel efficiency: Toyota says the hybrid can travel 10 to 12 more miles on every gallon than the standard AWD version. Based on official EPA ratings, it uses 375 gallons annually versus 517 gallons for the standard RAV4 in the example provided, which translates to about $340 in yearly savings.
Which 2021 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid trim should I buy?
The 2021 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid is offered in 5 trim levels: LE, XLE, XLE Premium, XSE, and Limited.
Here's the short version:
- LE: This is the entry point, so it makes sense if you want the hybrid’s core efficiency and standard AWD without paying for extra comfort or convenience features.
- XLE: This is the sensible middle ground if you want a more rounded ownership experience than the LE, especially if you value added equipment without stretching to the top trims.
- XLE Premium: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds the most noticeable comfort upgrades, including the power sunroof, SofTex upholstery, dual-zone climate control, and the new-for-2021 wheel finish.
- XSE: Choose this if you want the sportier feel, since it gets a sport-tuned suspension for a firmer ride.
- Limited: Pick this if you want the most equipment, including the top infotainment setup and the only trim with rear automatic braking and the best IIHS headlight result.
Blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic warning are standard on all but the Hybrid LE, so that trim is the one with the biggest safety-feature gap.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.
- Deal availability: 35.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 2,349 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have held steady compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 82.1% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $26,741, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2021 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid's resale value?
The current average of $28,813 sits slightly above last year's $28,695.
That small increase suggests the market has stayed stable rather than swinging sharply in either direction. For a future seller, that kind of pricing pattern is helpful because it points to steady demand and fewer signs of a weakening market. It also means you’re less likely to see dramatic depreciation in the near term if you buy at a fair price.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.82/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2021 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid safe?
The 2021 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid earns an overall rating of five stars from NHTSA, and the IIHS gives it top marks in all assessments except for its headlights.
It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.
Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard, and it includes adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go capability, forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, forward automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keep assist, lane-centering assist, automatic high-beam headlights, and road-sign recognition. Blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic warning are standard on all but the Hybrid LE, while rear automatic braking is reserved for the Hybrid Limited.
The main caveat is the headlight result: only the adaptive front headlights on the Hybrid Limited get the top IIHS Good review. The lane-centering system and adaptive cruise control also drew criticism for being a bit intrusive or inconsistent in heavier traffic.
Should I buy a 2021 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2021 if:
- 35.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 82.1% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have held steady compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.82/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It combines strong fuel economy, standard AWD, and a more powerful hybrid setup than the regular RAV4.
Consider the 2020 if:
- At $27,311, the 2020 costs less than the current year's $28,813 average.
- It emphasizes everyday practicality, strong efficiency, and broad appeal.
The bottom line: If you want the stronger all-around package, the 2021 is the better target because it balances efficiency, standard AWD, safety, and strong owner satisfaction. If your priority is spending less up front, the 2020 is the more budget-friendly path and still delivers the core hybrid strengths that make this model appealing.
