CarGurus Analysis: 2021 Toyota Prius Prime
overall

Summary
With 307 currently listed for sale and an average price of $22,999, 37.8% of 2021 Toyota Prius Prime listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2021 Toyota Prius Prime 5 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 6.5 / 10.
73.3% of 2021 Toyota Prius Prime listings on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2021 Toyota Prius Prime stands out as Toyota’s plug-in take on the Prius, and its appeal starts with packaging. It offers a good list of standard equipment and features while still delivering the range and efficiency qualities plug-in hybrid shoppers want. It also brings standard advanced safety features and an impressive electric range, which help make it a practical choice for buyers focused on efficiency.
At the same time, the 2021 Prius Prime shows its age in a competitive market. Toyota’s infotainment system is hard to use, acceleration is slow, and the car’s design may be polarizing. Poor ergonomic design further tempers the experience, so the Prius Prime is best suited to shoppers who value efficiency and standard features more than driving excitement or a particularly intuitive cabin.

The Prius Prime had all of the features we was looking for. We were looking for something that would get really good gas mileage. It is kind of a cross between electric and gas. You can drive 25 miles on electric and then it will switch to gas/electric until you can charge it again. The charging unit is quite compact. The best of both worlds. It has a lifetime guaranty on the battery for as long as you own the car. The safety features has about everything you could ask for. The only thing I could think to improve the car would be a safety feature that would show that you are approaching a stop light or stop sign. I thought the price was great for all of the features it had to offer. We had a 2009 Prius and it is a bit bigger and roomier. It drives smooth and has all of the power we feel we need and is right for us. Love this car.

Very comfortable seating. Sharp looks. Incredible fuel economy but the extended range and easy refueling of a gas engine. I buy 9 gallons about once every 2 months. Mostly running electric on daily driving. WoW.

Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The Prius Prime is built around Toyota’s hybrid expertise, and its plug-in setup is designed for efficiency-focused ownership. Its powertrain is straightforward, with a gasoline engine and electric motor working together, and Toyota says charging the battery takes 2.2 hours on Level 1 or 5.5 hours on Level 2.
Toyota also includes a three-year/36,000-mile comprehensive warranty, a five-year/60,000-mile powertrain warranty, a 10-year/150,000-mile hybrid battery warranty, and an eight-year/100,000-mile hybrid-related components warranty.
For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about the basic hybrid hardware and more about whether the car has been maintained well enough to preserve its efficiency and usability.
What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Toyota Prius Prime?
At 72.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has been in any collision. Pay close attention to body condition, panel alignment, and whether the cabin electronics and charging system work as expected. Because this model’s appeal depends heavily on efficiency and standard equipment, you’ll want to make sure the car still feels clean, complete, and easy to live with.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The Prius Prime’s three trim levels are LE, XLE, and Limited. The cabin is largely similar across trims, but technology add-ons change as you move up, and the XLE and Limited bring the more complicated touchscreen-based controls.
- Powertrain: It uses a 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine with an electric motor, front-wheel drive, and an e-CVT. Toyota says it delivers 25 miles of all-electric range, 640 miles of total range, and 133 MPGe in electric mode, with 55 mpg city, 53 mpg highway, and 54 mpg combined in hybrid mode.
- Safety package: Every version gets Toyota’s Star Safety System plus automatic emergency braking with cyclist and pedestrian detection, lane-departure warning with steering assist, automatic high beams, adaptive cruise control, road-sign assist, and Lane Tracing Assist automated lane centering.
- Infotainment: Standard tech includes a 7-inch infotainment touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, a head-up display, Bluetooth, satellite radio, a WiFi hot spot, and three USB ports. An 11.6-inch touchscreen is available, along with a wireless smartphone charger and a 10-speaker JBL audio system.
- Fuel efficiency: Toyota lists 133 MPGe in electric mode, plus 55 mpg city, 53 mpg highway, and 54 mpg combined in hybrid mode.
Which 2021 Toyota Prius Prime trim should I buy?
The 2021 Toyota Prius Prime is offered in 3 trim levels: LE, XLE, Limited.
Here's the short version:
- LE: This is the trim to focus on if you want the Prius Prime’s core strengths without moving into the more complicated higher-grade setup. It gives you the standard safety and efficiency package while keeping the value proposition strongest.
- XLE: This trim adds more technology, but it also brings the touchscreen-heavy control layout that can be frustrating to use. Choose it only if the extra equipment matters more to you than simplicity.
- Limited: This is the most feature-rich version, but it keeps the same basic driving character and cabin layout. It makes sense if you want the top equipment set and are comfortable paying more for it.
Every trim gets Toyota’s standard safety suite, including automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, adaptive cruise control, road-sign assist, and Lane Tracing Assist.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Toyota Prius Prime?
This looks like a moderate market for selective buyers, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.
- Deal availability: 37.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 311 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices are up 1.07% year-over-year.
- Clean inventory: 72.7% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $20,925, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2021 Toyota Prius Prime's resale value?
The current average of $23,018 sits slightly above last year's $22,775.
That modest increase suggests the Prius Prime has held value reasonably well for a used hybrid with a strong efficiency story. If you buy carefully and keep mileage, condition, and maintenance in check, you should have a decent chance of preserving value when it’s time to sell.
The market is also still showing demand, which helps support pricing for clean examples. A model like this tends to appeal to efficiency-minded shoppers, so well-kept listings can remain attractive over time.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2021 Toyota Prius Prime safe?
The 2021 Toyota Prius Prime earns Good IIHS crashworthiness ratings in most tests, with an Acceptable result in the small-overlap front-passenger side test. It also earns a five-star overall safety rating from NHTSA.
It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.
Toyota equips every version with its Star Safety System, plus automatic emergency braking with cyclist and pedestrian detection, lane-departure warning with steering assist, automatic high beams, adaptive cruise control, road-sign assist, and Lane Tracing Assist automated lane centering.
The main caveat is the IIHS small-overlap front-passenger side result and the merely Acceptable headlight rating, so you should pay attention to lighting performance and overall crash protection when comparing used examples.
Should I buy a 2021 Toyota Prius Prime or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2021 if:
- 37.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 72.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices are up 1.07% year-over-year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2021 adds a strong standard safety package and an impressive electric range.
Consider the 2020 if:
- At $22,976, the 2020 costs less than the current year's $23,018 average.
- It is built around efficiency above all else.
The bottom line: If you want the better-balanced shopping target, the 2021 is the stronger pick because it combines standard safety, strong efficiency, and a still-reasonable market price. If your priority is saving a bit more upfront, the 2020 is the price-sensitive alternative, especially if you’re mainly focused on fuel savings rather than newer-market positioning.
