How much does the 2021 Toyota Prius cost?

Prices have held steady compared to this time last year, signaling a stable and predictable market for this model year.

There are 352 listings available, which gives you a solid amount of inventory to compare.

Is the 2021 Toyota Prius a good car?

Yes — the 2021 Toyota Prius earns a 5/5 user rating and a 6.2/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Cost effectiveness at 9/10.

It fits you best if you want a practical, efficiency-first car that prioritizes reliability, safety, economy, and fuel efficiency over excitement. The expert review also points to a quiet cabin and strong value for money, while noting that the Prius is built around everyday usefulness rather than driving thrills.

The main trade-offs are its potentially polarizing design and sluggish performance.

31.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals, so there is still some room to shop selectively.

Is the 2021 Toyota Prius reliable?

Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

The Prius is framed as a reliability-first choice, with the expert review emphasizing dependable, efficient, and low-hassle transportation. Its cost-effectiveness notes also point to a well-earned reputation for reliability, plus complimentary scheduled maintenance for the first two years or 25,000 miles.

For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about mechanical drama and more about finding a well-kept example that has been maintained consistently.

What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Toyota Prius?

At 70.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle-history report and then prioritize a close inspection of body panels, paint consistency, and any signs of prior repair. Because the Prius is bought for efficiency and low-stress ownership, condition matters: focus on how well the cabin, infotainment, and driver-assistance systems have held up, not just the odometer reading.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The lineup includes L Eco, LE, XLE, 2020 Edition, and Limited. The base setup is functional, but the higher trims add more convenience and tech, and the Limited stands out with its unique infotainment system.
• Powertrain: The Prius pairs a 1.8-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine with an electric motor and an e-CVT. Front-drive versions are tuned for efficiency, while AWD-e adds a rear electric assist motor and trades some fuel economy for extra traction.
• Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard across the lineup and includes adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, lane-departure warning, lane-keep assist, lane-centering assist, automatic high-beam headlights, and road-sign recognition. Blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert is included on LE and higher trims.
• Infotainment: The standard system uses a 7-inch touchscreen and includes Bluetooth, SiriusXM, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Amazon Alexa compatibility. The Limited gets an 11.6-inch portrait-style touchscreen, plus navigation, a 10-speaker JBL audio system, and natural voice recognition, but it does not get the Android Auto upgrade.
• Fuel efficiency: The L Eco is rated at 56 mpg combined, other front-drive versions at 52 mpg combined, and AWD-e versions at 49 mpg combined. In testing, the Prius 2020 Edition averaged 47.5 mpg.

Which 2021 Toyota Prius trim should I buy?

The 2021 Toyota Prius is offered in 5 trim levels: L Eco, LE, XLE, 2020 Edition, and Limited.

Here's the short version:

• L Eco: This is the efficiency-first choice if you want the best combined fuel economy in the lineup. It makes the most sense for you if your priority is minimizing fuel stops and keeping ownership costs low.
• LE: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds more everyday usability while keeping the Prius’s core efficiency and standard safety tech intact. It also unlocks blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert.
• XLE: Choose this if you want a more comfort-oriented Prius with more equipment than the LE, while still staying within the mainstream part of the lineup.
• 2020 Edition: This is the commemorative special edition, limited to 2,020 examples, with blacked-out trim, black 17-inch wheels, a body-color rear spoiler, and unique paint choices.
• Limited: This is the most feature-rich trim, with the 11.6-inch portrait touchscreen, JBL audio, navigation, and natural voice recognition. It is the one to buy if you want the most upscale Prius experience, but note the infotainment system’s Android Auto limitation.

Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard on every trim, and blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert starts on LE and above.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Toyota Prius?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.

• Deal availability: 31.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 352 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have held steady compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 70.2% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $19,700, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2021 Toyota Prius's resale value?

The current average of $20,986 sits slightly below last year's $21,057.

That small decline suggests the Prius has held value fairly steadily rather than swinging sharply up or down. For you as a future seller, that usually means pricing should remain predictable if the car is clean, well maintained, and documented.

Because the Prius is still strongly associated with efficiency and low ownership costs, well-kept examples should continue to attract steady shopper interest. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2021 Toyota Prius safe?

The 2021 Toyota Prius earns favorable marks from IIHS, though it has not been rated by NHTSA for crashworthiness.

It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard, and it includes adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, lane-departure warning, lane-keep assist, lane-centering assist, automatic high-beam headlights, and road-sign recognition. If you choose LE or a higher trim, you also get blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert.

One caveat is that the lane-keeping and lane-centering systems can make the steering feel artificial, and the lane-departure warning can become intrusive.

Should I buy a 2021 Toyota Prius or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2021 if:

• 31.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 70.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have held steady compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• Toyota made Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 standard across the lineup and added Android Auto as standard on most trims.

Consider the 2020 if:

• At $20,661, the 2020 costs less than the current year's $20,986 average.
• It is described as a benchmark hybrid with strong versatility, technology, and available all-wheel drive.

The bottom line: If you want the most current version of this generation with standardized safety tech and stable pricing, the 2021 is the better default choice. If your main goal is saving money up front, the 2020 is the smarter value play, especially if you find a clean example with the features you want.
