Why it stands out
The 2021 Toyota Prius stands out as a practical, efficiency-first car for drivers who mainly want to get from point A to point B with minimal hassle, expense, or discomfort. It is especially appealing if reliability, safety, economy, and fuel efficiency matter more to you than excitement, and its quiet cabin and strong value for money add to that appeal.
For 2021, Toyota also offered a 2020 Edition, limited to 2,020 examples to mark the 20th anniversary of the first Prius sold in the U.S. market. That version brought blacked-out trim, black 17-inch wheels, a body-color rear spoiler, and Supersonic Red or new Wind Chill paint colors. Toyota also made Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 standard across the lineup and added Android Auto as standard alongside Apple CarPlay, except in the Prius Limited’s unique infotainment system.
The Prius is not without tradeoffs, though. Its design may be polarizing, and its performance is described as sluggish. Even so, for buyers who prioritize efficiency and everyday usefulness above all else, the 2021 Toyota Prius remains a compelling choice.

This is the 5th Toyota Prius Ive owned. The features of my 2021 Prius XLE are what I expect from Toyota. The car borders on being a luxury/hybrid sedan. The ride is so much better than previous year Priuses, along with no wind or road noise. The quality is up to par with other Toyotas Ive owned. This car lacks nothing. There is nothing in this cars class that it can be compared with. The Honda Insight doesnt come close, the Hyundai Ioniq is a nice hybrid, but lacks the fine details and refinement of the Prius. I might compare it to a Camry S.E. hybrid, but again, the Camry is a different type of car. The fuel mileage isnt as good as what the Prius delivers. Also, the Camry is not a hatchback...too bad.

I have had Toyotas for years. I like their reliability, low repair cost and gas mileage. This is our third Prius!

Zippier than I expected. Very quiet and smooth riding. Simple features as far as seats go. This model felt smaller, like it wraps around me. But overall a nice car for the price with excellent fuel mileage.

Is the 2021 Toyota Prius a good car?
Yes — the 5/5 user rating and 6.17/10 expert rating point to a car that delivers strongly on the basics. The standout strength is Cost effectiveness at 9/10. The 2021 Toyota Prius is built for drivers who want to get from point A to point B with minimal hassle, expense, or discomfort, and its appeal centers on reliability, safety, economy, and fuel efficiency rather than excitement. The trade-offs are clear: its design may be polarizing, and performance is described as sluggish. Even so, for buyers who prioritize efficiency and everyday usefulness, it remains a compelling choice. Good and great deals account for 36.2% of listings, which gives you some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2021 Toyota Prius reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction. The 2021 Prius is framed as a dependable, efficiency-first car with a well-earned reputation for reliability, and its cost-effectiveness notes reinforce that with complimentary scheduled maintenance for the first two years or 25,000 miles. Its performance profile also supports the reliability story: the hybrid system is tuned for steady, low-hassle commuting, with electric-only driving at low speeds and predictable operation in everyday use. For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is less about mechanical drama and more about whether the car’s condition and maintenance history match its reputation.
What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Toyota Prius?
At 72% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important. You should start with a vehicle history report, then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection that focuses on bodywork quality, alignment, and signs of prior repair. Because this car’s appeal depends so heavily on efficiency and everyday usability, you should also pay close attention to how the cabin, infotainment, and hybrid system feel in real-world use.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The lineup includes L Eco, LE, XLE, 2020 Edition, and Limited. The 2020 Edition adds blacked-out trim, black 17-inch wheels, a body-color rear spoiler, and unique paint choices, while the interior is described as unusual across the range. Base trims miss the blind-spot monitoring system with rear cross-traffic alert, which starts at LE and above.
- Powertrain: The Prius uses an Atkinson-cycle 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine with a 53-kilowatt electric motor and an e-CVT. Front-drive models are rated at 52 mpg combined, the L Eco reaches 56 mpg combined, and AWD-e versions drop to 49 mpg combined.
- Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard and includes adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go capability, forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, lane-departure warning, lane-keep assist, lane-centering assist, automatic high-beam headlights, and road-sign recognition. Blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert is included on LE and higher.
- Infotainment: Standard equipment includes a 7-inch touchscreen, Bluetooth, SiriusXM satellite radio, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Amazon Alexa compatibility, Safety Connect, and WiFi Connect. Limited gets an 11.6-inch portrait-style touchscreen, plus navigation, a natural voice recognition system, and a 10-speaker JBL audio system.
- Fuel efficiency: The L Eco is rated at 56 mpg combined, other front-drive versions at 52 mpg combined, and AWD-e models at 49 mpg combined. In testing, the Prius 2020 Edition averaged 47.5 mpg.
Which 2021 Toyota Prius trim should I buy?
The 2021 Toyota Prius is offered in 5 trim levels: L Eco, LE, XLE, 2020 Edition, and Limited.
Here's the short version:
- L Eco: This is the efficiency-first choice, and it is the best-value trim if your priority is maximizing fuel economy. It delivers the highest EPA combined rating in the lineup and keeps the Prius focused on low running costs.
- LE: This is the smart step-up if you want more everyday usability. It adds the blind-spot monitoring system with rear cross-traffic alert, making it a stronger pick for shoppers who want a better safety feature set without moving too far up the price ladder.
- XLE: Choose this if you want a more upscale version of the Prius without jumping all the way to the top trim. It sits above LE and should appeal if you want a better-equipped daily driver while staying within the core Prius formula.
- 2020 Edition: This is the limited-run appearance model. It is mainly for buyers who want the blacked-out trim, black 17-inch wheels, body-color rear spoiler, and special paint choices.
- Limited: This is the most feature-rich trim, with the 11.6-inch portrait-style touchscreen, JBL premium audio, navigation, and natural voice recognition. It is the right choice if you want the most tech and convenience equipment, though it does not get Android Auto on that unique infotainment system.
Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard across the lineup, and blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert starts on LE and higher.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Toyota Prius?
The market looks moderate, so you can shop selectively rather than rush.
- Deal availability: 36.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 389 listings available.
- Clean inventory: 72.0% of listings are accident-free.
Is the 2021 Toyota Prius safe?
The 2021 Toyota Prius earns favorable marks from IIHS, though it does not yet have a Top Safety Pick rating. It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts. Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard on every version and includes adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go capability, forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, lane-departure warning, lane-keep assist, lane-centering assist, automatic high-beam headlights, and road-sign recognition. If you get a Prius LE or higher, you also get blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert. One caveat is that the lane-keeping and lane-centering systems can make the steering feel more artificial, and the lane-departure warning can become intrusive.
Should I buy a 2021 Toyota Prius or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2021 if:
- 36.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 72% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- Toyota made Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 standard across the lineup and added Android Auto as standard on most trims.
Consider the 2020 if:
- It was already a benchmark hybrid with strong versatility and available all-wheel drive.
The bottom line: The 2021 is the better pick if you want the updated standard safety and smartphone integration, plus a market that still offers some deal opportunities. If you are price-sensitive and find a cleaner 2020 with the right equipment, that year can still make sense, but the 2021 is the more straightforward buy for shoppers who want the latest standard features and a familiar Prius ownership experience.
