Overview

The Nissan LEAF is one of a number of entry-level electric vehicles (EVs) out there, a category that also includes the Chevrolet Bolt EV, Hyundai IONIQ, Kia Niro EV, and Tesla Model 3. There were some big updates last year, but 2021 sees no notable changes.
As before, the LEAF comes with two powertrains, Base and LEAF PLUS. The Base gets you a 110-kilowatt (147-horsepower) electric motor that also produces 236 pound-feet of torque, running off a 40-kilowatt-hour battery. The LEAF PLUS upgrades the electric motor to 160 kW (214 hp) and 250 lb-ft and has a 62-kWh battery. All LEAFs are exclusively front-wheel drive (FWD).
The big difference between the two powertrains is the range and fuel economy. The Base rates at 149 miles, and 111 city, 99 highway, and 111 combined miles-per-gallon equivalent (MPGe). Meanwhile, the LEAF PLUS does 226 miles of range and comes in at 118, 97, and 108 MPGe. Both models use the CHAdeMO charging standard and can be replenished up to 80 percent in 40-45 minutes, with the optional DC fast-charging capability. They otherwise support 120- and 240-volt home charging.
There are three trims on the LEAF. The base S trim gets an 8-inch infotainment display with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, automatic LED headlights, keyless access and start, Bluetooth, automatic temperature control, and a 60/40 split-folding rear seat. 16-inch alloy wheels are optional. The SV adds navigation, EV-specific telematics services, hands-free text messaging, fog lights, and 17-inch wheels. The SL PLUS comes with the better powertrain, heated seats, a heated leather-wrapped steering wheel, an eight-way power driver’s seat, Bose premium audio, and a cargo cover.
No matter which LEAF you choose, you get Nissan’s Safety Shield 360 suite standard. It bundles forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, high-beam assist, lane-departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, rear automatic braking, and a rear-view camera. The SV comes standard with adaptive cruise control. An optional SV Technology Package adds on ProPilot Assist driver-assist tech, a surround-view camera system, and driver alertness. The SL PLUS gets all of the aforementioned equipment standard. The LEAF received good safety scores from both the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).
The Nissan LEAF is a competent, affordable EV.

Great car for local driving. Long distance, freeway speeds, not so much. High build quality. Nice features. Great radio. Super car.

After driving it for a day, Im really enjoying the idea of fossil free (mostly) transportation. The car is nicely appointed and more attractive to look at than most ev cars, such as the Volt and Bolt. Not as cool as the exterior of a Tesla, but look at those resale prices - ridiculous.

Is the 2021 Nissan LEAF a good car?
Yes — the 2021 Nissan LEAF earns a 5/5 user rating, and it fits you well if you want an approachable used electric hatchback with a quiet, comfortable driving experience and strong everyday usability. The overview points to a practical daily driver for buyers who can charge at home, plus EV-specific convenience like e-Pedal for one-pedal driving and available tech such as Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Nissan Safety Shield 360, and ProPilot Assist. It also adds useful versatility with NissanConnect vehicle-to-home capability for outage backup. With 41.2% of listings marked as good or great deals, the market looks favorable if you’re ready to shop.
Is the 2021 Nissan LEAF reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction. The overview also frames the LEAF as a quiet, comfortable, easy-to-live-with EV that has matured beyond its earliest range limitations, which is the kind of profile many used buyers want for routine commuting and local driving. Its appeal is strongest when your charging habits match the car’s strengths and you value simplicity over long-distance flexibility. For long-term ownership, the main risk is that aging battery range can become a bigger concern as the car gets older.
What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Nissan LEAF?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 89.9% — always verify the vehicle history report. You should also prioritize a pre-purchase inspection that focuses on battery condition, charging behavior, and overall wear, since range loss matters more as the car ages. Because this is an EV with a specific charging setup, it’s smart to confirm that the car fits your home charging routine and daily driving needs before you commit.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Nissan LEAF?
Yes — this looks like a buyer-friendly market if you’re shopping for a used LEAF.
- Deal availability: 41.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 119 listings available.
- Clean inventory: 89.9% of listings are accident-free.
Should I buy a 2021 Nissan LEAF or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2021 if:
- 41.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 89.9% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2020 if:
- It offers strong value, standard advanced safety features, and confident handling.
The bottom line: If you want the better all-around shopping target, the 2021 Nissan LEAF is the cleaner primary path because it combines favorable deal availability with strong accident-free inventory and a highly rated ownership experience. If your priority is stretching your budget as far as possible, the 2020 can still make sense, especially if you find one with the right equipment and condition for your driving needs.
