Vans, especially those with plenty of space in the back, have become increasingly popular in recent years. Some choose to live in their vans, with elaborate fittings and upgrades, but for people just wanting a solid solution to move a bunch of people from one place to another, there’s the Mercedes-Benz Metris. The German automaker recently gave the van a handful of updates to bring it up to date on technology and comfort features.

Unlike the Metris Cargo, the Passenger van can only be had with the standard 126-inch wheelbase. Even so, the vehicle can be configured in a number of ways. Seven-passenger seating is standard, while a five-passenger configuration can be added in for a small discount. Eight-passenger seating is also available for an extra $406. The rear doors come in a dual side-opening setup as standard, but can be changed to a liftgate configuration for $497.

Regardless of how many people it carries or how the doors open, every 2021 Metris Passenger van is powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 208 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. A nine-speed gearbox and rear-wheel drive (RWD) are standard. Mercedes says that the powertrain is good enough to provide 1,720 pounds of payload capacity and up to 5,000 pounds of towing, depending on the configuration.

Inside, there’s a new 7-inch infotainment touchscreen that can run Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Mercedes-Benz also offers a connectivity package that adds a SIM card for mobile and emergency communications.

Several packages are available to upgrade the van with various comfort and safety features. The van can also be upgraded with sportier wheels and interior luggage management options. Upfits are also a big part of the Metris experience. The vehicle can be upgraded with special seating arrangements that offer wheelchair ramps, folding seats, special leatherette upholstery, and more. There’s also a $25,719 option to add a three-passenger folding seat, a custom table, and a pop-top bed. The 2021 Metris Passenger Van is on sale now with a starting price of $36,840 before destination.
