The Mercedes-Benz Metris Passenger is one of the more well-known Sprinter’s younger brothers. Offered in a single 126-inch wheelbase with an overall length of 202.4 inches, the Metris is shorter than the short-wheelbase versions of the Chevy Express and Ford Transit. It’s available in 5-, 7-, or 8-passenger versions and offers two rear-door configurations (a traditional liftgate or cargo-style, vertically split twin doors). Every Metris uses a turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine that produces 208 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. It’s paired with a 7-speed paddle-shiftable automatic transmission driving the rear wheels. Neither all-wheel drive (AWD) nor a high roof are options for this van. But its 5,000-pound towing capacity is respectable enough to haul a small trailer, ATVs, or watercraft. EPA-estimated fuel economy is 19 mpg city, 23 highway, and 21 combined. The Metris Passenger Van is available in two trims, the Worker Passenger Van and the Passenger Van. The Worker trim is available only in a 7-passenger configuration, looks more spartan inside and out, and has fewer available features. The Worker van comes in only three exterior colors, while the standard Metris Passenger offers 14 exterior hues. The differences are further exaggerated in available packages. The Worker offers four packages (Convenience, Connectivity, Appearance, and Comfort), while the standard Metris offers 14 packages encompassing all the features available in the Worker trim’s packages plus much more. Think of the Worker trim as a stripper version of the Metris Passenger. Perhaps the biggest difference between the two vans is their starting price: The Worker Passenger van starts at $31,350, while the standard Metris Passenger costs significantly more at $35,580. With 97 cubic feet of cargo volume behind the second row, the 5-passenger Metris is similar to a minivan in its interior space. It offers 38 cubic feet of space behind its third row. Package highlights on the Metris Passenger include two safety packages with available features including blind-spot warning, lane-keeping assist, and parking assist. Electrically operated sliding doors are offered in the Comfort package on the Worker trim and are available as a standalone option on the Metris Passenger. Both trims offer various extended service and extended warranty packages to serve fleet owners. The Metris serves a unique buyer—someone who doesn’t need the size of the many larger vans on the market and who sees the value in a German-designed people mover.
