Is the 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLE a good car?

Yes — the 4.5/5 user rating points to strong owner satisfaction, and the expert rating is 8.00/10. The model scores 10/10 across Performance, Technology, and Safety.

Owners repeatedly praise the GLE for its technology, comfort, customizable features, and high-quality sound system. The overview also frames it as a comfort- and technology-first midsize luxury SUV with premium interior materials and broad powertrain choice.

The trade-offs are clear: styling is described as uninspired, the base engine is underwhelming, and advanced safety features are not standard. Some owners also feel it is overpriced and note that performance may not match competitors at the same price point.

With 37.0% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have some room to shop selectively.

Is the 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLE reliable?

Owners rate it 4.5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction. The owner summary also points to a vehicle that feels dependable in daily use, with praise centered on comfort, technology, and a high-quality sound system.

The expert performance write-up notes that the base GLE 350 uses an ordinary coil-sprung setup, which makes the most sense for reliability because there is nothing expensive to fail. It also describes the automatic stop-start system as seamless, with virtually no vibration or shake when the engine restarts.

The first scheduled maintenance visit is on the house.

For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is that the more complex suspension and higher-output versions can bring more expensive repairs than the simpler base setup.

What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLE?

Accident-free inventory is solid at 84.8% — always verify the vehicle history report.

You should still run a history report on any candidate and prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you are looking at a higher-trim or more heavily optioned example. Focus on condition, maintenance records, and whether the equipment on the window sticker actually matches the car in front of you.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The interior is a standout, with premium materials, a large dual-screen layout, and a cabin that feels especially upscale once you move beyond the base setup. The base trim is also where you are most likely to feel the value gap, since the model is described as needing to be optioned fairly high to feel rich.
• Powertrain: The lineup includes a base 255-hp four-cylinder, a 362-hp turbo inline-six, a 429-hp AMG version of that six-cylinder, a 483-hp twin-turbo V8, and a 603-hp AMG V8. Efficiency varies, with the six-cylinder returning 21/26/23 and the four-cylinder 19/26/22.
• Safety package: Standard equipment includes blind-spot monitoring, a driver attention monitor, and Pre-Safe Sound. Forward emergency braking is standard, while adaptive cruise, lane-keeping, evasive steering assist, front cross-traffic braking, and semi-automated control are optional.
• Infotainment: The main display is a 12-inch touchscreen with Interior Assistant, and the system includes standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The interface also supports voice control, touchpad input, and over-the-air-style convenience through its highly connected feature set.
• Fuel efficiency: The six-cylinder returns 21/26/23 mpg, the four-cylinder returns 19/26/22 mpg, and the V8 is EPA-rated at 16 mpg city, 21 mpg highway, and 18 mpg combined.

Which 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLE trim should I buy?

The 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLE is offered in 8 trim levels: GLE 350, GLE 350 4Matic, GLE 450, GLE 580, AMG GLE 53, AMG GLE 63 S, AMG GLE 53 Coupe, AMG GLE 63 S Coupe.

Here's the short version:

• GLE 350: This is the entry point, and it is the only rear-wheel-drive version. It gives you the core GLE experience at the lowest price, but it is also the trim most clearly described as underwhelming, so it makes sense mainly if you want the cheapest path into the lineup.
• GLE 350 4Matic: This is the better-value starting point for most shoppers because it adds all-wheel drive while keeping the more approachable pricing of the lower end of the range. If you want the safest all-around buy without jumping into luxury pricing, this is the trim to target.
• GLE 450: This is the sweet spot if you want the strongest balance of power, efficiency, and everyday luxury. The inline-six is notably more satisfying than the base engine, and this trim also gets the self-leveling air suspension setup that helps the GLE feel especially polished.
• GLE 580: Choose this if you want V8 power and a more forceful personality. It is a big step up in output, but it also pushes you deeper into luxury-SUV pricing territory.
• AMG GLE 53: This is the performance-minded choice if you want sharper acceleration and AMG tuning without going all the way to the top. It adds the electric supercharger and more aggressive chassis tuning, making it the most compelling enthusiast pick for many buyers.
• AMG GLE 63 S: This is the full-power flagship if you want the most extreme version of the standard SUV. It brings the highest output and the most serious hardware, but it is also the most expensive way to buy into the lineup.
• AMG GLE 53 Coupe: Pick this if you want the coupe body style with AMG performance and a more distinctive look. It is for buyers who care as much about style and presence as they do about speed.
• AMG GLE 63 S Coupe: This is the most dramatic and expensive version, combining the coupe shape with the top AMG powertrain. It is the right choice only if you want the most exclusive and aggressive GLE experience.

Safety equipment is not standard across the lineup, so check carefully for the driver-assistance features you want before you buy.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLE?

This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you can shop with some leverage if you are patient.

• Deal availability: 37.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 2,645 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 10.08% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 84.8% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $38,356, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLE's resale value?

The current average of $38,356 sits slightly below last year's $42,656.

That decline suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you as a buyer but may limit upside if you plan to resell soon. If you buy at the right price, you reduce the chance of taking a steep depreciation hit later.

The GLE's broad appeal, strong owner satisfaction, and premium positioning should help it remain desirable among used luxury-SUV shoppers. Still, the current price trend shows that resale values are under some pressure compared with a year ago.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLE safe?

The 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLE earns the best Top Safety Pick+ rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

It earns a 10/10 safety score from our experts.

Standard safety equipment includes blind-spot monitoring, a driver attention monitor, forward emergency braking, and Pre-Safe Sound. Optional features include adaptive cruise, lane-keeping, evasive steering assist, front cross-traffic braking, semi-automated control, and 360-degree cameras.

One important caveat is that advanced safety features are not standard, so you should verify exactly which driver-assistance systems are installed on any used example you are considering.

Should I buy a 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLE or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2021 if:

• 37.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Accident-free inventory is solid at 84.8% — always verify the vehicle history report.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 10.08% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2021 brings broad powertrain choice, premium interior materials, and standout technology.

Consider the 2020 if:

• At $27,281, the 2020 costs less than the current year's $38,356 average.
• It offers a roomier, quieter cabin with a strong infotainment system.

Consider the 2022 if:

• At $40,393, the 2022 costs more than the current year's $38,356 average.
• It leans harder into style with a more distinctive coupe-like shape.

The bottom line: If you want the best mix of price movement, inventory, and owner satisfaction, the 2021 is the strongest all-around pick. If your priority is saving money, the 2020 is the better value path; if you want a more expressive design, the 2022 is worth a look.
