Summary
With 533 currently listed for sale and an average price of $21,933, 33.4% of 2021 Mazda CX-9 listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2021 Mazda CX-9 4.54 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7 / 10.

Why it stands out
The 2021 Mazda CX-9 stands out as a midsize SUV that blends style, performance, technology, and safety in a premium package. It is described as a compelling choice in its segment, and the 2021 model year changes make it better than ever. Mazda’s focus on a premium feel comes through in the CX-9’s stylish design and premium interior materials, which help it feel more upscale than many rivals.
That appeal is balanced by a few clear drawbacks. The CX-9 is noted for having a cramped third row, along with outdated and unintuitive technology. Even so, it remains attractive to buyers who value a spacious cabin, a polished driving experience, and a more luxurious interior than the typical family SUV.

We absolutely love the cx-9, we looked at the pathfinder, sorento, pilot and cx-9. We did not like the drive of the pathfinder, the lack of safety features & keyless start in the sorento (especially with how easy kia has been to break into) the pilot is great but to get all the features we want just out of budget. The cx-9 provides the luxury feel and drive, and allows you to have all of the safety features. We love it

German luxury like ride and interior without the German car repairs. Solid ride, feels great driving looks beautiful and fun to drive. Biggest downside is interior space.

Is the 2021 Mazda CX-9 a good car?
Yes — the 2021 Mazda CX-9 earns a 4.54/5 user rating and a 7/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Safety at 9/10.
Owners consistently praise its smooth handling, reliability, and luxurious interior. The review summary also points to comfort as a major strength, with the CX-9 standing out for a polished driving experience and upscale feel.
The trade-offs are familiar: it could use more power, and cargo space is limited when the third row is in use. The overview also frames it as a three-row SUV for shoppers who value style, a premium cabin, and a more luxurious feel than many rivals.
With 33.1% of listings marked as good or great deals, the market still offers some room to shop selectively.

Owners rate it 4.54/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback also emphasizes reliability and a trouble-free ownership experience, with reviewers describing it as dependable and easy to count on over time. That kind of language matters for used buyers because it suggests the CX-9 has earned trust beyond just first impressions.
The driving review reinforces that impression by describing the SUV as smooth, well-sorted, and composed in everyday use. Mazda also includes a free three-year trial period for connected services, which adds some ownership convenience early on.
For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about outright durability and more about living with the CX-9’s known space and technology compromises over time.
What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Mazda CX-9?
At 69.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the listing price looks unusually attractive. Focus your inspection on bodywork quality, signs of prior repair, and whether the cabin and electronics still feel consistent with the mileage and asking price.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: Sport and Touring sit below the Carbon Edition, while Grand Touring and Signature add more standard features. The Carbon Edition stands out with Polymetal Gray paint, cranberry red leather upholstery, second-row captain’s chairs, and dark-finish 20-inch wheels, while Signature adds a restyled grille, fresh wheel design, patterned aluminum cabin accents, and quilted leather with contrast piping.
- Powertrain: Every 2021 CX-9 uses a 2.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine with a six-speed automatic transmission. Front-wheel drive is standard on most trims, while Signature includes all-wheel drive as standard.
- Safety package: Standard equipment includes blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go capability, rain-sensing wipers, and other driver-assist tech. Carbon Edition adds adaptive front lighting, a windshield wiper de-icer, a driver-attention monitor, front and rear parking sensors, and Smart City Brake Support Reverse. Grand Touring adds a surround-view camera system.
- Infotainment: The CX-9 uses a 10.25-inch static display with Mazda Connect, and all models include Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, text messaging support, Pandora access, and 9-1-1 automatic emergency notification. Mazda Connect services is also standard, with a free three-year trial and a separate three-month/2GB WiFi hotspot trial.
- Fuel efficiency: The CX-9 is rated at 23 mpg combined in EPA testing, and the review notes an observed 20.1 mpg on the standard route.
Which 2021 Mazda CX-9 trim should I buy?
The 2021 Mazda CX-9 is offered in 5 trim levels: Sport, Touring, Carbon Edition, Grand Touring, Signature.
Here's the short version:
- Sport: This is the entry point, and it gives you the core CX-9 experience with the standard turbocharged engine, six-speed automatic, and the basic safety and infotainment setup. It makes sense if you want the lowest-cost way into the model and can live without the extra luxury and convenience features found higher up.
- Touring: This trim adds more equipment than Sport while staying below the more upscale versions, making it a sensible middle ground if you want a better-equipped CX-9 without stretching too far. It should suit you if you want a balanced mix of value and comfort.
- Carbon Edition: This is the best-value trim if you want the biggest jump in style and equipment for the money. It adds the distinctive look, second-row captain’s chairs, adaptive front lighting, a driver-attention monitor, parking sensors, reverse automatic emergency braking, satellite radio, a Bose audio system, a wireless phone charger, and a head-up display.
- Grand Touring: Choose this if you want a more luxury-leaning CX-9 with the surround-view camera system and additional upscale features. It’s the better fit if convenience and visibility matter more to you than keeping the price down.
- Signature: This is the most premium version, with the richest cabin materials and standard all-wheel drive. It’s the right pick if you want the most upscale CX-9 experience and are willing to pay for it.
The Carbon Edition is the standout value pick, while the safety package expands as you move up the lineup.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Mazda CX-9?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so it pays to compare listings carefully.
- Deal availability: 33.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 535 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 8.38% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 69.5% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $21,927, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2021 Mazda CX-9's resale value?
The current average of $21,927 sits slightly below last year's $23,933.
That decline suggests the CX-9 has already absorbed some of its recent market softening, which can help future sellers if prices stabilize. If you buy at today’s average or below, you may have less downside than someone who bought when prices were higher.
The model’s premium feel and strong owner satisfaction can help support demand, especially among shoppers who want a more upscale three-row SUV without moving into luxury-brand pricing. Still, resale will likely depend on condition, mileage, and whether the vehicle has a clean history.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.54/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2021 Mazda CX-9 safe?
The 2021 Mazda CX-9 earns a five-star overall rating from NHTSA, with four-star ratings for frontal-impact tests for the driver and front passenger.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
Standard safety equipment includes blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go capability, rain-sensing wipers, and other driver-assist tech. Carbon Edition adds adaptive front lighting, a windshield wiper de-icer, a driver-attention monitor, front and rear parking sensors, and Smart City Brake Support Reverse, while Grand Touring adds a surround-view camera system.
One caveat is that lane-centering assistance is unavailable, and the adaptive cruise system can struggle to maintain a smooth following distance at higher speeds. The safety review also notes that the forward-collision warning system can flash a bright BRAKE! warning on the HUD when it detects danger.
Should I buy a 2021 Mazda CX-9 or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2021 if:
- 33.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 69.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 8.38% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.54/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2021 update brings a new infotainment system, added safety tech, and a more upscale Carbon Edition.
Consider the 2022 if:
- At $23,562, the 2022 costs more than the current year's $21,927 average.
- It adds standard all-wheel drive and keeps the CX-9’s upscale, family-friendly character.
The bottom line: If you want the better value, the 2021 is the smarter buy because prices have eased and the model-year updates improve its appeal. If you’re willing to spend more for a newer example with standard AWD, the 2022 is the cleaner alternative for shoppers who prioritize that added traction and don’t mind the higher entry price.
