Is the 2021 Lexus RX a good car?

Yes — 4.92/5 owners’ rating points to very strong owner satisfaction, and the expert rating is 7.83/10. The standout strength is Cost effectiveness at 9/10.

Owners repeatedly praise its reliability, luxurious features, and smooth driving experience, and they also call out comfort and handling as standout qualities. That lines up well with the RX’s use case as a midsize luxury SUV that feels easy to live with, especially if you want comfort and refinement over flash.

The main trade-offs are fairly pedestrian performance and technology that can feel unintuitive. Even so, the RX’s comfort-first character and strong value proposition make it a compelling choice if you want a relaxed luxury SUV rather than a sporty one. Good and great deals account for 38.8% of listings, which suggests there are still worthwhile opportunities in the market.

The RX’s long-term ownership outlook is helped by its reputation, but used buyers should still watch for wear items and verify maintenance history carefully.

What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Lexus RX?

At 74.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a thorough pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re considering a higher-mileage example or one with prior bodywork. Focus on overall condition, signs of uneven wear, and whether the vehicle’s equipment and safety systems are functioning as expected.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The RX lineup includes the RX, RX F Sport, RXL, RX Hybrid, and RXL Hybrid. The base RX and RX Hybrid are the entry points in their respective powertrain families, while the RXL and RXL Hybrid add an extended body and a third row of seating. The F Sport brings a more aggressive look and a more performance-focused feel, but the base RX still gets standard 18-inch wheels, LED lighting, rear privacy glass, and a well-appointed interior with NuLuxe-trimmed seats and power-adjustable front seats.
• Powertrain: The standard RX, RXL, and RX F-Sport use a 3.5-liter V6 with 295 horsepower and 267 pound-feet of torque paired with an eight-speed automatic. The hybrid models use a 3.5-liter V6 and three electric motors for 308 hp with an e-CVT. The front-wheel-drive RX 350 is the most fuel-efficient gas model at 20 mpg city, 27 mpg highway, and 23 mpg combined.
• Safety package: Lexus Safety System+ 2.0 is standard, and it includes pre-collision warning with automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, cyclist detection, automatic high beams, adaptive cruise control, lane-departure warning with steering assist, lane-keep assist, lane-trace assist, and road sign assist. Every RX also comes with a rearview camera, 10 airbags, enhanced vehicle stability control, and blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert. The RXL and RXL Hybrid have not been tested by IIHS.
• Infotainment: The standard setup includes an 8-inch touchscreen, voice recognition, Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Amazon Alexa, satellite radio, HD Radio, a WiFi hot spot, six USB ports, and a nine-speaker sound system. A 12.3-inch screen, navigation, wireless charging, and upgraded audio systems are available, but wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are not offered.
• Fuel efficiency: The gas RX 350 returns 20 mpg city, 27 mpg highway, and 23 mpg combined in front-wheel-drive form. AWD or the RXL lowers combined efficiency by 1 mpg, and the RXL with AWD gets 21 mpg combined. The hybrid models are rated at 29 or 31 mpg city and 28 mpg highway, depending on configuration.

Which 2021 Lexus RX trim should I buy?

The 2021 Lexus RX is offered in 5 trim levels: RX, RX F Sport, RXL, RX Hybrid, and RXL Hybrid.

Here's the short version:

• RX: This is the best starting point if you want the core RX experience at the lowest entry price. You still get the comfortable ride, strong standard safety tech, and a well-equipped cabin, so it makes sense if you value value and don’t need the extra body length or sportier tuning.
• RX F Sport: Choose this if you want the most driver-focused version of the gas lineup. It adds a more aggressive appearance and sport-oriented touches, and it suits you best if you want the RX’s comfort with a little more attitude.
• RXL: Pick this if you need the extended body and third row. It’s the right choice when passenger flexibility matters more than keeping the shortest, simplest RX.
• RX Hybrid: This is the efficiency-minded choice in the lineup. It keeps the RX formula but adds hybrid power, making it a smart fit if you want better fuel economy without leaving the RX family.
• RXL Hybrid: This is the most practical pick if you want the third row and hybrid efficiency together. It’s the best match for shoppers who need space and want to keep fuel use in check.

Lexus Safety System+ 2.0 is standard across the lineup.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Lexus RX?

This is a moderate market for selective buyers, with enough inventory and deal activity to make shopping worthwhile.

• Deal availability: 38.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,484 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 2.85% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 74.3% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $35,275, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2021 Lexus RX's resale value?

The current average of $35,354 sits slightly below last year's $36,389.

That softer pricing suggests the RX has already moved through some of its near-term depreciation, which can help future sellers if the market stays steady. For you, that means buying at today’s average may reduce the risk of taking the steepest early-value hit.

The RX’s strong reputation for comfort and reliability should continue to support demand among used buyers. If you keep mileage reasonable and maintain the vehicle well, you’re more likely to preserve value than you would with a less sought-after luxury SUV.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.92/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2021 Lexus RX safe?

The 2021 Lexus RX earns a Top Safety Pick designation from IIHS and four-star ratings overall from NHTSA, with five-star ratings in side-impact crashworthiness.

It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

Lexus Safety System+ 2.0 is standard, and it includes pre-collision warning with automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, cyclist detection, automatic high beams, adaptive cruise control, lane-departure warning with steering assist, lane-keep assist, lane-trace assist, and road sign assist. Every RX also comes with a rearview camera, 10 airbags, enhanced vehicle stability control, and blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert.

One caveat is that the RXL and RXL Hybrid have not been tested by IIHS, so you should be especially careful if you’re shopping those longer-body versions.

Should I buy a 2021 Lexus RX or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2021 if:

• 38.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 74.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 2.85% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.92/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2021 brings new standard safety systems and keeps the RX’s comfort-first, value-oriented formula.

Consider the 2020 if:

• At $32,883, the 2020 costs less than the current year's $35,354 average.
• It emphasizes comfort, refinement, and a quiet, easygoing driving experience.

Consider the 2022 if:

• At $38,752, the 2022 costs more than the current year's $35,354 average.
• It adds minimal changes, including new colors and a standalone fog lamps option.

The bottom line: If you want the best balance of price, comfort, and safety tech, the 2021 is the strongest all-around pick. If your priority is spending less, the 2020 is the better value play; if you want a newer model-year example and don’t mind paying more, the 2022 is the alternative to compare.
