CarGurus Analysis: 2021 Lexus GX
overall

Summary
With 748 currently listed for sale and an average price of $42,181, 30.7% of 2021 Lexus GXs for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2021 Lexus GX 4.17 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 5.33 / 10.
75.1% of 2021 Lexus GX models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2021 Lexus GX stands out because it is a throwback in both good ways and bad. It is one of the last SUVs with truck-like body-on-frame construction and true off-road capability, and Lexus says it is actually a rebadged Toyota Land Cruiser Prado and related to the Toyota 4Runner. That old-school setup gives it a character that is unusual in today’s market, where most SUVs are car-based crossovers.
For 2021, the GX receives minor updates, including a new Premium Plus Package and acoustic front side glass. Lexus continues to offer only the GX 460, with a single powertrain option, standard four-wheel drive, and three trim levels: base, Premium, and Luxury. The GX’s strengths include a powerful engine, premium interior materials, and a comfortable ride, while its drawbacks include poor fuel economy, poor handling, and outdated technology.
Owners also tend to value the 2021 Lexus GX for its luxury, dependability, beautiful design, interior, and quiet driving experience. At the same time, some drivers point to limited cargo space and towing capability as additional compromises, reinforcing that this is a distinctive SUV for buyers who want traditional capability and comfort more than modern efficiency or packaging.

Very nice looking car but after researching I found out through other owners it wouldn’t be by best option for towing a bigger camping trailer

Beautiful vehicle, love the interior, the body and paint. Great drive, quiet, responsive, and great breaking. Only reason it does not get 5 of 5 is their poor technology. Technology is old and needs updating, for a 2021 Vehicle, it lacks the technology BMW and Mercedes offer. Overall, beautiful and luxurious.

Is the 2021 Lexus GX a good car?
Generally — the 2021 Lexus GX earns a 4.17/5 user rating and a 5.33/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Look and feel at 7/10.
Owners consistently praise its luxury, dependability, and quiet driving experience, along with its beautiful design and interior. The trade-offs are its outdated technology and poor fuel economy, and the expert review also points to poor handling and a comfortable ride that still feels truck-like. For you, that means the GX makes the most sense if you want a traditional luxury SUV with real character rather than a modern crossover focused on efficiency and polish.
The market shows 37.0% good or great deals, so there is some room to shop carefully.
Is the 2021 Lexus GX reliable?
Owners rate it 4.17/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
User feedback highlights dependability and a reputation that owners feel they can count on, which is reinforced by the model’s long-term appeal. The expert review also notes Lexus’ excellent reputation for reliability and suggests looking for a used one because the GX has changed little over the years. Lexus includes a four-year, 50,000-mile basic warranty and a six-year, 70,000-mile powertrain warranty, which helps support ownership confidence.
For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about outright durability and more about living with aging tech, fuel costs, and the compromises of an older design.
What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Lexus GX?
At 74.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a thorough pre-purchase inspection, especially if you are considering a higher-mileage example or one with off-road use. Focus on overall condition, signs of wear in the cabin, and whether the truck has been maintained consistently, since this model’s appeal depends heavily on how well it has been kept. If you want the GX’s strengths without extra surprises, pay close attention to how the drivetrain, brakes, and interior have aged.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base trim is the most stripped-down version, while Premium adds more visual polish and Luxury brings the most upscale feel; the Premium trim also gets standard silver 18-inch wheels, and the Luxury trim adds semi-aniline leather.
- Powertrain: You get a single 4.6-liter V8 with 301 horsepower and 329 pound-feet of torque, paired with a six-speed automatic and standard four-wheel drive.
- Safety package: Lexus Safety System+ is standard and includes forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, automatic high beams, lane-departure warning, and adaptive cruise control. Blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert are standard as well.
- Infotainment: The GX uses a 2021-era system with Bluetooth, Amazon Alexa, and Google Assistant, but no Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. Two USB ports are standard for each of the first two rows, and a 17-speaker Mark Levinson audio system is available.
- Fuel efficiency: The GX is rated at 16 mpg combined, 15 mpg city, and 19 mpg highway.
Which 2021 Lexus GX trim should I buy?
The 2021 Lexus GX is offered in 3 trim levels: base, Premium, and Luxury.
Here's the short version:
- base: This is the entry point if you want the GX’s core body-on-frame character and standard V8 without paying for extra trim content.
- Premium: This is the best-value trim if you want the most balanced mix of equipment and price; it adds a more polished look and was the test vehicle in the expert review.
- Luxury: This is the right choice if you want the most upscale cabin and the available adaptive suspension, but it is the most expensive path.
Lexus makes many of the off-road features part of an option package, and only for the highest trim level.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Lexus GX?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you should shop with a clear target and be ready to move on a strong listing.
- Deal availability: 37.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 783 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 1.38% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 74.7% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $40,979, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2021 Lexus GX's resale value?
The current average of $42,147 sits slightly below last year's $42,738.
That mild decline suggests the GX is holding value reasonably well, even if it is not appreciating. For a future seller, the current trend means you should not expect a big price jump, but you also are not looking at a steep drop in market interest. The GX’s niche appeal helps support demand among buyers who specifically want a traditional luxury SUV with real capability.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.17/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2021 Lexus GX safe?
It earns a 6/10 safety score from our experts.
Lexus Safety System+ is standard, with forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, automatic high beams, lane-departure warning, and adaptive cruise control. Blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert are standard too. The GX does miss out on some features found in other Lexus models, including traffic-sign recognition and Lane Tracing Assist automated lane centering.
Should I buy a 2021 Lexus GX or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2021 if:
- 37.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 74.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 1.38% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.17/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- The 2021 adds minor updates, including a Premium Plus Package and acoustic front side glass.
Consider the 2020 if:
- At $37,693, the 2020 costs less than the current year's $42,147 average.
- It blends old-school toughness with luxury comfort.
Consider the 2022 if:
- At $48,022, the 2022 costs more than the current year's $42,147 average.
- It emphasizes rugged towing and trail capability over everyday polish.
The bottom line: If you want the current-year balance of price, satisfaction, and availability, the 2021 is the sensible pick. If you are more price-sensitive, the 2020 is the value play; if you want to spend more for the next model year, the 2022 keeps the same rugged formula.
