What should I look for when buying a used BMW X5?
Across all model years, accident-free inventory is solid at 83.8% — always verify the vehicle history report.
| Model Year | Accident-Free % |
|---|---|
| 2027 | 98% |
| 2026 | 96.9% |
| 2025 | 95.2% |
| 2024 | 91.5% |

| 2018 | 69.3% |
| 2017 | 62.5% |
| 2016 | 61.8% |
| 2015 | 62.5% |
| 2014 | 60.6% |
Older model years carry meaningfully higher accident rates, so always verify the vehicle history report on pre-2019 models.
Key things to evaluate:
- Safety package: The X5’s standard Active Driving Assistant complement of driver aids includes lane-keep assist, lane-departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, automatic emergency braking, and forward collision warning.
- Infotainment: The X5 received a curved dashboard display and new operating system, with a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and 14.9-inch infotainment touchscreen, plus wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
- Fuel efficiency: Six-cylinder X5 models are EPA-rated at 25 mpg combined (23 mpg city, 27 mpg highway) whether you choose RWD or AWD. Fuel economy drops to 19 mpg combined (17 mpg city 22 mpg highway) for the V8-engined M60i and 15 mpg combined (13 mpg city, 18 mpg highway) for the high-performance X5 M Competition.
Which BMW X5 trim should I buy?
The 2025 BMW X5 offers these trims:
- X5 sDrive40i: The base rear-wheel-drive model starts the lineup and gives you the core X5 formula at the lowest entry price.
- X5 xDrive40i: This all-wheel-drive version adds AWD for buyers who want extra traction and the same six-cylinder setup.
- X5 xDrive50e: This plug-in hybrid adds electric driving capability and is a strong pick if you want the most efficiency-focused powertrain in the lineup.
- X5 M60i xDrive: This V8 model adds the strongest gas-engine performance in the range and suits buyers who want the most power.
- X5 M Competition: This is the top performance trim for shoppers who want the most extreme output and track-ready character.
What BMW X5 do most buyers choose?
The BMW X5 years with the most listings are 2025, 2023, and 2024.
| Model Year | Total Listings | Good + Great Deals % |
|---|---|---|
| 2025 | 5,155 | 33.1% |
| 2023 | 3,674 | 34.5% |
| 2024 | 3,606 | 35.1% |
| 2026 | 3,408 | 32.7% |
| 2022 | 2,680 | 35.3% |
| 2027 | 2,552 | 31.5% |
These higher-volume years tend to be popular because they give you more inventory to compare, which can make it easier to find the right color, mileage, and equipment mix. They also tend to sit in the part of the lineup where newer features and broader availability overlap.
What is the BMW X5's resale value?
| Model Year | Current Avg. Price | Year-Over-Year Change |
|---|---|---|
| 2022 | $36,715 | −14.17% |
| 2023 | $41,687 | −13.36% |
| 2021 | $32,284 | −13.11% |
| 2019 | $25,199 | −12.83% |
| 2018 | $17,643 | −12.57% |
| 2014 | $11,775 | −12.15% |
| 2025 | $60,347 | −11.72% |
| 2020 | $27,968 | −11.24% |
| 2017 | $15,534 | −10.86% |
| 2016 | $14,004 | −10.71% |
| 2015 | $12,742 | −9.23% |
| 2024 | $52,742 | −7.79% |
| 2026 | $71,435 | −6.63% |
Most model years in the table are down year over year, which is good news if you're shopping used and want to benefit from softer pricing. The largest drops are concentrated in several older and mid-cycle years, while the newest entries show smaller declines. That suggests recent X5s are still adjusting in price, but not as sharply as some earlier model years.
The 2026, 2024, and 2015 model years have held their value best, with the smallest year-over-year price changes.

I think this car is way too overpriced for the features and the condition. Considering it has almost 90k miles, and with the base packaging, this should be somewhere around 16-18k at the dealership assuming no technical or mechanical issues observed with the car. Almost 21k is crazy. The car does not have: M package Premium plus package, whatever that was called that gives you multi controllable seats, shade screens on the back 360 camera and all the other good stuff. The car seemed factory base model, with no features. So 21k is way too expensive.

Why it stands out
The 2025 BMW X5 remains a distinctive choice because it is BMW’s first SUV and still an integral part of the brand’s lineup. It sits in the midsize luxury SUV class, positioned between the X3 and X7 and alongside the coupe-like X6. For 2025, BMW marks the X5’s 25th anniversary with a limited-edition model, and the SUV otherwise carries over without other changes.
What continues to make the X5 appealing is its blend of multiple powertrain options, great handling, and a comfortable ride. Those strengths help explain its longevity, even if the latest version is not the best value compared with rivals. One drawback is that advanced safety features are not standard, which can make the X5 feel less generous than some competitors in a crowded segment.
