Is the 2021 Jeep Cherokee a good car?

Yes — the 2021 Jeep Cherokee earns a 4.8/5 user rating and a 7.0/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Technology at 9/10. Owners consistently praise its great value, smooth ride, and advanced technology, and many also like its safety features and off-road capability. The Cherokee’s modern identity and broad capability make it a fit if you want a midsize SUV that feels distinctive rather than generic. The main trade-offs are its polarizing design, underwhelming base engine, and limited cargo space. With 34.4% of listings marked as good or great deals, the market still gives you some room to shop carefully.

Is the 2021 Jeep Cherokee reliable?

Owners rate it 4.8/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction. User feedback points to a reliable, dependable ownership experience for many drivers, with praise for its trouble-free feel, long-term appeal, and the sense that it’s a vehicle you can count on. The expert review also describes the Cherokee as capable and well sorted in everyday use, with a transmission that has proved itself capable and fuel saving. If you’re buying used, the main long-term risk is making sure the specific vehicle you choose has been maintained well and doesn’t show signs of the construction issues some owners mention.

What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Jeep Cherokee?

Accident-free inventory is solid at 77% — always verify the vehicle history report.

You should still run a history report on every candidate, because accident-free listings are not the same thing as guaranteed problem-free ownership. Prioritize a pre-purchase inspection that focuses on body condition, interior wear, and how the vehicle drives, especially if you’re comparing multiple trims or drivetrains. Pay close attention to whether the equipment matches the listing, since some shoppers may be drawn to features that are only available on higher trims.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The entry-level Latitude with 17-inch wheels and front-wheel drive is the simplest-looking version, while the 80th Anniversary Edition adds 19-inch Granite Crystal wheels and painted lower body cladding for a nicer appearance. The optional panoramic sunroof is another meaningful upgrade if you want a more premium feel.
• Powertrain: You’re offered a 2.4-liter four-cylinder with 180 horsepower on the Latitude and Latitude Plus, a 3.2-liter V-6 with 271 hp, and a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder with 270 hp and 295 pound-feet of torque. The nine-speed automatic is standard, and the Cherokee can be had with front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive depending on trim.
• Safety package: Lane departure warning with lane keep assist, full-speed forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking, rear cross-traffic alert, and blind spot monitoring are standard on every trim level. Adaptive cruise control with stop and go is limited to the Limited and Trailhawk trims, and it is part of an option package on the Trailhawk.
• Infotainment: The Cherokee uses Uconnect with a 7-inch touchscreen on the Latitude, Latitude Plus, and Latitude Lux trims, and an 8.4-inch touchscreen on the Limited and Trailhawk. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are wired, not wireless, and the Cherokee also offers a 4G WiFi hotspot and Amazon Alexa integration.
• Fuel efficiency: EPA-rated fuel economy reaches up to 31 mpg highway on front-wheel-drive models with the optional 2.0-liter turbo engine. The all-wheel-drive base 2.4-liter engine returns 29 mpg highway, 21 mpg city, and 24 mpg combined, while the V-6 with the Active Drive II full-time system is rated at 21 mpg combined and 18 mpg city.

Which 2021 Jeep Cherokee trim should I buy?

The 2021 Jeep Cherokee is offered in 5 trim levels: Latitude, Latitude Plus, Latitude Lux, Limited, Trailhawk.

Here's the short version:

• Latitude: This is the simplest starting point, and it makes sense if you want the Cherokee’s core shape, standard safety equipment, and the 7-inch Uconnect setup without paying for extras you may not need.
• Latitude Plus: This trim builds on the lower model with the same basic powertrain and infotainment setup, so it’s best if you want a modest step up without jumping too far in price.
• Latitude Lux: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds the more desirable 2.0-liter turbo engine option and keeps the Cherokee’s everyday usability intact.
• Limited: Choose this if you want the larger 8.4-inch touchscreen and access to adaptive cruise control with stop and go, along with a more upscale feel.
• Trailhawk: This is the trim to buy if you want the Cherokee’s strongest off-road character, including Jeep Active Drive Lock, a 56:1 crawling ratio, and Selec-Speed Crawl Control.

The safety package is standard across the lineup, but adaptive cruise control is reserved for the Limited and Trailhawk, with the Trailhawk getting it only as part of an option package.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Jeep Cherokee?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently but should move quickly on the right listing.

• Deal availability: 34.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 3,228 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 10.20% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 77.0% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $18,451, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2021 Jeep Cherokee's resale value?

The current average of $18,451 sits slightly below last year's $20,547.

That decline suggests the Cherokee has become more affordable for used buyers, but it also means a future seller may need to price competitively to stand out. If you buy well now, you may benefit from the softer market, but resale will likely depend on condition, mileage, and how well the vehicle is equipped. Listings with desirable features and strong presentation should hold buyer interest better than bare-bones examples.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.8/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2021 Jeep Cherokee safe?

The 2021 Jeep Cherokee did not earn a Top Safety Pick or Top Safety Pick+ award from the IIHS, and it earns a four-star overall rating from NHTSA.

It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.

The Cherokee does earn top “Good” scores in every crashworthiness category, plus a G+ score for ease of use of the LATCH child seat anchors. The main caveat is headlight performance: upper trims received an “Acceptable” rating, while the rest received a “Marginal” rating. Standard safety equipment includes lane departure warning with lane keep assist, full-speed forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking, rear cross-traffic alert, and blind spot monitoring. Adaptive cruise control with stop and go is limited to the Limited and Trailhawk trims, and it is part of an option package on the Trailhawk.

Should I buy a 2021 Jeep Cherokee or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

• 34.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Accident-free inventory is solid at 77% — always verify the vehicle history report.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 10.20% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.8/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2021 model stands out for its impressive, easy-to-use technology and broad capability, while also carrying the same polarizing design and limited cargo space noted by experts.

The 2021 is a good path if you want a used Cherokee with strong tech, solid owner satisfaction, and a softer price than it had a year ago. If you’re especially price-sensitive, you can shop carefully for a lower-mileage example near the bottom of the range, but you should still prioritize condition and equipment over chasing the absolute cheapest listing.
