CarGurus Analysis: 2021 Jeep Cherokee
overall

Summary
With 3,401 currently listed for sale and an average price of $19,279.00, 32.4% of 2021 Jeep Cherokees for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2021 Jeep Cherokee 4.8 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7 / 10.
78.9% of 2021 Cherokee models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2021 Jeep Cherokee stands out as a midsize SUV that arrived on Jeep’s all-new platform for the 2014 model year and quickly became a controversial but ultimately successful interpretation of a familiar name. It was launched as part of the KL generation, and the reaction around its styling was immediate because it did not lean on the boxy look associated with the older Cherokee. Even so, the model earned a reputation for being more capable than many expected, which helps explain why it found such a large audience.
What makes the 2021 Cherokee appealing is the mix of technology and everyday usability. The test-drive notes point to impressive, easy-to-use technology, while also acknowledging drawbacks that matter to shoppers: the base engine is underwhelming, the design may not appeal to everyone, and cargo space is limited. That combination gives the Cherokee a clear identity: it is a practical, tech-friendly SUV with broad appeal, but one that asks buyers to accept some compromises in power, styling, and utility.

It’s a nice car, deceptively large inside, and comfortable. I’m average height but on the fluffy side, and it’s a very comfortable fit. Nice smooth ride. A/c feels like a freezer (I bought the car on the hottest day of the year and I was plenty cool on the long drive home.

How much does the 2021 Jeep Cherokee cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $19,221 |
| Year-Round Low | $19,176.92 |
| Year-Round High | $21,337.13 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $21,335 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −9.91% |
Prices have softened 9.91% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 3,408 listings available, which suggests you have a healthy amount of inventory to compare.
If you find a listing below $19,176.92, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2021 Jeep Cherokee a good car?
Yes — the 2021 Jeep Cherokee earns a 4.8/5 user rating and a 7/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Technology at 9/10.
Drivers consistently praise its great value, smooth ride, and advanced technology, and many also like its safety features and off-road capability. The Cherokee’s appeal is strongest if you want a practical SUV with a clear identity and useful everyday tech.
The trade-offs are real, though: the base engine is underwhelming, the styling may not be for you, and cargo space is limited. That makes it a better fit if you value comfort, features, and personality more than outright utility or acceleration.
With 28.2% of listings marked as good or great deals, the market still gives you room to shop selectively.
Is the 2021 Jeep Cherokee reliable?
Owners rate it 4.8/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction. User feedback also points to a dependable, trouble-free ownership experience for many drivers, with praise for its long-term value and overall confidence behind the wheel.
The Cherokee’s nine-speed automatic is described as a capable, fuel-saving transmission, which supports the idea that the drivetrain can be a solid long-term companion when maintained properly. The model also offers remote start, which adds a small ownership convenience perk for daily use.
For used buyers, the main long-term risk is that condition can vary a lot by vehicle, so a careful inspection and service-history review matter more than the badge alone.
What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Jeep Cherokee?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 78.7% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still check the history report carefully, because a clean listing percentage does not replace a vehicle-specific record. Prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you are considering a higher-mileage example or one with incomplete maintenance documentation. Focus on overall condition, since the Cherokee’s value proposition depends heavily on whether the individual vehicle has been well cared for.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The entry-level Latitude with 17-inch wheels and front-wheel drive looks and feels more basic, while the 80th Anniversary Edition adds 19-inch Granite Crystal wheels and painted lower body cladding for a nicer appearance. The panoramic sunroof is another notable upgrade if you want a more premium feel.
- Powertrain: You can find a 2.4-liter four-cylinder with 180 horsepower, a 3.2-liter V-6 with 271 hp, or a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder with 270 hp and 295 pound-feet of torque. The turbo engine is optional on the Latitude Lux and Limited, and the nine-speed automatic is standard across the lineup.
- Safety package: Lane departure warning with lane keep assist, full-speed forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking, rear cross-traffic alert, and blind spot monitoring are standard on every trim level. Adaptive cruise control with stop and go is limited to the Limited and Trailhawk, and it is also part of an option package on the Trailhawk.
- Infotainment: The Cherokee uses Uconnect with a 7-inch touchscreen on the Latitude, Latitude Plus, and Latitude Lux, and an 8.4-inch touchscreen on the Limited and Trailhawk. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are wired, not wireless, and the Cherokee also offers a 4G WiFi hotspot and Amazon Alexa integration.
- Fuel efficiency: The Cherokee is rated at up to 31 mpg highway with front-wheel drive and the optional 2.0-liter turbo engine. AWD models with the base 2.4-liter engine return 29 mpg highway, 21 mpg city, and 24 mpg combined, while AWD V-6 models with Active Drive II are rated at 21 mpg combined and 18 mpg city.
Which 2021 Jeep Cherokee trim should I buy?
The 2021 Jeep Cherokee is offered in 5 trim levels: Latitude, Latitude Plus, Latitude Lux, Limited, and Trailhawk.
Here's the short version:
- Latitude: This is the most affordable way into the Cherokee, and it gives you the core SUV experience with the 2.4-liter engine and the basic 7-inch Uconnect setup. It makes sense if you want the lowest entry price and are comfortable with a simpler feature set.
- Latitude Plus: This trim keeps the same general formula as the Latitude but gives you a step up in equipment without moving into the pricier upper trims. It is the trim to consider if you want a better-balanced value play than the base model.
- Latitude Lux: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds access to the optional 2.0-liter turbo engine and keeps the more user-friendly 7-inch touchscreen. If you want stronger performance without jumping all the way to the top of the range, this is the one to target.
- Limited: This trim brings the larger 8.4-inch touchscreen and also unlocks the optional turbo engine. It suits you if you want a more upscale feel and more available equipment without going all the way to the Trailhawk.
- Trailhawk: This is the choice if you want the Cherokee’s most capable off-road setup, including Jeep Active Drive Lock with a 56:1 crawling ratio and Selec-Speed Crawl Control. It also gets the 8.4-inch touchscreen and access to adaptive cruise control, though that feature is not standard.
Adaptive cruise control with stop and go is only available on the Limited and Trailhawk, and it is part of an option package on the Trailhawk.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Jeep Cherokee?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you can shop carefully without feeling rushed.
- Deal availability: 28.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 3,408 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 9.91% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 78.7% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $19,176.92, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2021 Jeep Cherokee's resale value?
The current average of $19,221 sits slightly below last year's $21,335.
That softer pricing suggests the Cherokee has already absorbed a meaningful amount of depreciation, which can help future sellers if they buy at the right price. If you purchase near the lower end of the current range and keep the vehicle in strong condition, you may have a better chance of limiting your loss later. The market still appears active enough that well-priced examples should remain sellable.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.8/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2021 Jeep Cherokee safe?
The Cherokee did not earn a Top Safety Pick or Top Safety Pick+ award from the IIHS. It earns four-star ratings from NHTSA.
It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.
The Cherokee comes standard with lane departure warning with lane keep assist, full-speed forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking, rear cross-traffic alert, and blind spot monitoring on every trim level. Adaptive cruise control with stop and go is reserved for the Limited and Trailhawk, and it is also part of an option package on the Trailhawk.
The main caveat is the headlight performance: upper trims received an Acceptable rating, while the rest received a Marginal rating.
Should I buy a 2021 Jeep Cherokee or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
- 28.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 78.7% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 9.91% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.8/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2021 model stands out for its impressive, easy-to-use technology, but it also asks you to accept compromises in base-engine performance, styling, and cargo space.
The 2021 is the better choice if you want a tech-friendly Cherokee with strong owner satisfaction and a market that still offers decent deal availability. If you are especially price-sensitive, a nearby year may be worth comparing, but the 2021 remains a sensible target when you find a clean, well-priced example.
