Why it stands out
The 2021 Hyundai Tucson stands out as the final model year of its generation, and that timing gives it a particular appeal for shoppers who want a well-equipped compact SUV without waiting for the next redesign. Hyundai loaded it with plenty of tech and safety features, and it was offered at a competitive price, which helps explain why the older model still makes sense even as a new Tucson was on the way.
It also has a few traits that make it easy to live with day to day. The Tucson’s design is stylish, its cabin is comfortable, and its technology is easy to use. Those strengths help offset its weaker points, which include sluggish performance, an underwhelming base engine, and noticeable noise. Even so, the 2021 Tucson remains attractive for buyers who value comfort, straightforward features, and solid value over outright speed.

CPO so 10/10,000 warranty still valid. Reliable car, nice features, good gas mileage, good value. Pickup lacking but that’s because I was driving a v8 prior.

I was looking for a car that my family could comfortably ride in, and the Tucson was the perfect car for that. Its easy to drive and the ride quality is pretty good. Above all, the long warranty allows you to drive with confidence. However, drivers who seek the fun of driving may not be interested. I think I purchased it for my own purposes.

I really like the blind spot warning signal and the back up camera as well. I thought this car was a great price for only 1 owner, no accidents & low mileage. This car was missing the cargo pkg that should have came with the car as promised. I didn’t shop around for any other models, since this was the only one I wanted. My 2014 Hyundai Tucson Limited, I bought brand new and would have kept it for the rest of my life, but on March 20, 2023 it was totaled in an accident.

Is the 2021 Hyundai Tucson a good car?

Owners consistently praise its comfort, great handling, and impressive features for the price. In practical terms, that lines up well with the Tucson’s role as a well-equipped compact SUV that prioritizes comfort, straightforward features, and value over speed.

For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about the ownership experience and more about finding a well-kept example that has been maintained properly.
What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Hyundai Tucson?
At 74.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the listing price looks unusually attractive. Focus on condition, prior damage, and whether the equipment on the vehicle matches what you expect from the trim level. Because this model was offered with a wide spread of features, it’s worth confirming that the specific car has the safety and convenience items you want.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The SE starts with 17-inch alloy wheels, manually adjustable front seats, a digital driver information display, and a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Higher trims add features such as heated front seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, wireless device charging, leather upholstery, a 360-degree camera system, and an 8-inch touchscreen.
- Powertrain: The base engine is a 2.0-liter four-cylinder with 161 horsepower and 150 pound-feet of torque. Higher trims use a 2.4-liter four-cylinder with 181 hp and 175 lb-ft of torque, and both engines pair with a six-speed automatic transmission and standard front-wheel drive or optional all-wheel drive.
- Safety package: Standard driver-assistance features include automatic emergency braking, forward collision warning, lane departure warning, lane-keeping assist, and driver drowsiness monitoring. Adaptive cruise control, pedestrian detection, automatic high-beams, a 360-degree parking monitor, and blind-spot monitoring are reserved for upper-tier trims.
- Infotainment: The standard setup is a 7-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. An 8-inch touchscreen is available on other trims, and wireless device charging is also available.
- Fuel efficiency: The most efficient version returns 23 mpg city, 28 mpg highway, and 25 mpg combined. The AWD version of the 2.0-liter model returns 22 mpg city, 28 mpg highway, and 25 mpg combined. The 2.4-liter FWD version returns 22 mpg city, 25 mpg highway, and 23 mpg combined, while the AWD version returns 21 mpg city, 26 mpg highway, and 23 mpg combined.
Which 2021 Hyundai Tucson trim should I buy?
The 2021 Hyundai Tucson is offered in 6 trim levels: SE, Value, SEL, Sport, Limited, and Ultimate.
Here's the short version:
- SE: This is the value-focused starting point, and it gives you the core Tucson experience with the 7-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and the basic comfort and convenience features you need. It makes sense if you want the lowest entry price and can live without the extra equipment found higher up the range.
- Value: This trim adds a meaningful step up with heated front seats, an eight-way power driver’s seat, roof rails, HD radio, satellite radio, and heated side mirrors. It looks like the best-value choice if you want more everyday comfort without jumping too far in price.
- SEL: This one adds 18-inch wheels, dual-zone automatic climate control, and a rear-seat USB power outlet, making it a smart middle-ground pick for shoppers who want a more polished daily driver.
- Sport: This trim brings 19-inch wheels, LED head-and-taillights, fog lights, a hands-free power liftgate, wireless device charging, and an Infinity premium audio system. It suits you if you want the most feature-rich feel before moving into luxury-oriented territory.
- Limited: This trim adds a 360-degree camera system, leather upholstery, a heated steering wheel, and chrome exterior accents. It’s the right choice if you want a more upscale cabin and easier parking visibility.
- Ultimate: This top trim adds the 8-inch touchscreen, heated and ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, rain-sensing wipers, and a panoramic sunroof. Choose it if you want the most comfort and convenience features available.
For safety, upper-tier trims are where you’ll find features like adaptive cruise control, pedestrian detection, automatic high-beams, a 360-degree parking monitor, and blind-spot monitoring.

If you find a listing below $17,176.38, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2021 Hyundai Tucson's resale value?
The current average of $17,514 sits slightly below last year's $18,916.
That price movement suggests the Tucson has already absorbed some depreciation, which can help future sellers if they buy at the right price today. A softer market can also make it easier for you to find a fair entry point, but it means resale gains are less likely in the near term. If you plan to sell later, buying a clean, well-equipped example should help preserve demand.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.83/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

It earns a 8/10 safety score from our experts.
The Tucson comes standard with automatic emergency braking, forward collision warning, lane departure warning, lane-keeping assist, and driver drowsiness monitoring. Should I buy a 2021 Hyundai Tucson or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2021 if:
- 30.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 74.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.41% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.83/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It’s the final model year before the redesign, so you get a well-equipped version of this generation at a competitive price.
Consider the 2022 if:
- At $20,753, the 2022 costs more than the current year's $17,514 average.
- It brings a redesigned body with more cargo and passenger space.
The bottom line: If you want the better value today, the 2021 is the smarter buy because it combines lower pricing, strong owner satisfaction, and plenty of equipment. If you’re willing to spend more for the redesign and extra space, the 2022 is the better long-term fit. For price-sensitive buyers, the 2021 remains the more compelling choice.
