Why it stands out
The 2021 Hyundai Sonata stands out as a rare kind of midsize sedan: one aimed at drivers who want on-pavement performance without giving up everyday passenger and cargo practicality. In this case, Hyundai pairs that mission with a compelling package and a bargain price, which helps the Sonata feel especially relevant in a shrinking car market where traditional sport sedans are increasingly uncommon.
It also brings a mix of strengths that broadens its appeal. The Sonata’s stylish design is one of its clear calling cards, and its technology is described as impressive. The model also offers multiple powertrain options, giving buyers more flexibility than many rivals. At the same time, there are tradeoffs to keep in mind: all-wheel drive is not available, and the base engine is described as underwhelming. Even so, the 2021 Sonata remains distinctive because it tries to balance enthusiast appeal with the practicality most sedan shoppers still need.

The 2021 Sonata is a great car. The car’s features with the dashboard design, bose speakers, premium seats and sunroof are the best. It looks good on the road. The features are an upgrade from the Elantra but I would recommend.

After test driving a Nissan Altima, Toyota Camry, and Honda Accord, I kept going back to the Sonata. The car drives really smooth and has many features I was looking forward. I was not really impressed with the other vehicles I drove, especially since they were priced higher than the Sonata. Hyundai had definitely made an improvement in the last couple of years!!

Drivers consistently praise its smooth driving experience, safety features, strong fuel economy, stylish design, and excellent powertrain warranty. The expert review also points to its compelling value and impressive technology, which fit the Sonata’s role as a midsize sedan that tries to balance everyday practicality with a more engaging personality.
The trade-offs are worth noting: all-wheel drive is not available, and the base engine is described as underwhelming. That means you should think carefully about whether you want the more expressive, performance-oriented setup or a simpler commuter-focused version.
With 31.6% of listings marked as good or great deals, the market still offers some attractive opportunities.
Is the 2021 Hyundai Sonata reliable?
Owners rate it 4.75/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
User feedback also points to a dependable ownership experience, with drivers describing the car as strong on safety and fuel economy while appreciating the excellent powertrain warranty. The expert review reinforces that sense of confidence by describing the car as a family sedan that feels like it should cost thousands more, and by highlighting the three years of free scheduled maintenance.
For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is making sure the specific car you choose has been maintained well and hasn’t accumulated hidden wear from prior use.
What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Hyundai Sonata?
At 70.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a thorough pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has had any prior damage. Focus on overall condition, signs of repair quality, and whether the equipment you want is actually present and functioning as expected.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The N Line treatment adds a more aggressive exterior look, sport front seats with premium Nappa leather bolsters and Dinamica suede inserts, red stitching, aluminum pedal covers, dark chrome accents, and a panoramic sunroof. If you want the most distinctive version, this is the one to target.
- Powertrain: The N Line uses a turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder with 290 horsepower and 311 pound-feet of torque, paired with an eight-speed wet dual-clutch automatic transmission with paddle shifters, rev-matching, and launch control.
- Safety package: Hyundai’s SmartSense collection includes adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, forward-collision warning with pedestrian and cyclist detection, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assistance, lane-centering assistance, blind-spot warning, rear cross-traffic warning, driver-attention warning, automatic high-beam headlights, Rear Occupant Alert, Safe Exit Warning, and Highway Drive Assist.
- Infotainment: The N Line pairs a 12.3-inch digital instrument panel with a 10.25-inch touchscreen, plus navigation, wireless smartphone charging, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, HD Radio, SiriusXM, Blue Link connected services, and Hyundai Digital Key.
- Fuel efficiency: The powertrain is rated at 27 mpg in combined driving, and the review notes an observed 23.7 mpg on a demanding test route.
Which 2021 Hyundai Sonata trim should I buy?
The 2021 Hyundai Sonata is offered in 1 trim level: N Line.
Here's the short version:
The N Line is the clear choice if you want the Sonata’s most distinctive mix of performance, style, and equipment. It adds the turbocharged 2.5-liter engine, the dual-clutch transmission, sport-tuned hardware, larger brakes, and a richer interior presentation, so it suits you best if you want the most engaging Sonata rather than the cheapest one. It also stands out as the best-value pick because the expert review gives Cost effectiveness a 10/10.
The safety package is comprehensive, and the review describes it as exceptionally sophisticated, so you’re not giving up advanced driver assistance by choosing this trim.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Hyundai Sonata?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you’re patient.
- Deal availability: 31.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,463 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.82% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 70.7% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $17,021, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2021 Hyundai Sonata's resale value?
The current average of $17,021 sits slightly below last year's $18,466.
That softer pricing suggests the model has already moved through a meaningful portion of its depreciation curve, which can help future resale stability if you buy at the right price. For a seller, the current market also shows that condition and equipment matter a lot, because shoppers still have enough inventory to compare options carefully.
A well-kept Sonata with desirable features should remain easier to move than a rough example, especially if it has a clean history and strong equipment.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.75/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2021 Hyundai Sonata safe?
The 2021 Hyundai Sonata earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
Every Sonata N Line is equipped with Hyundai’s SmartSense collection of advanced driving assistance systems, including adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go capability, forward-collision warning with pedestrian and cyclist detection, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assistance, lane-centering assistance, blind-spot warning, rear cross-traffic warning, driver-attention warning, automatic high-beam headlights, Rear Occupant Alert, Safe Exit Warning, and Highway Drive Assist.
The review also notes an important caveat: the standard Sonata’s crash-test ratings were not carried over to the N Line at the time of publication, and IIHS had not assigned a rating to this version yet. That means the ADAS suite is a major strength, but you should still pay close attention to the specific car’s condition and equipment.
Should I buy a 2021 Hyundai Sonata or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2021 if:
- 31.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 70.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.82% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.75/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2021 stands out for its bargain pricing, multiple powertrain options, and sporty N Line focus.
Consider the 2022 if:
- At $19,736, the 2022 costs more than the current year's $17,021 average.
- It adds a stronger emphasis on value, quality, and an outstanding warranty.
The bottom line: If you want the better price and are comfortable shopping carefully, the 2021 is the smarter buy. If you’d rather pay more for the next model year’s broader value story and can stretch your budget, the 2022 is the cleaner alternative.
