CarGurus Analysis: 2021 GMC Canyon
overall

Summary
With 1,182 currently listed for sale and an average price of $27,979, 30.3% of 2021 GMC Canyons for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2021 GMC Canyon 4.25 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.33 / 10.
78.8% of 2021 Canyon models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2021 GMC Canyon stands out as a refreshed midsize pickup that gets a new face and an AT4 off-road-inspired trim while remaining largely the same truck underneath. That combination gives it a more modern look without changing its basic formula, which should appeal to buyers who want a truck that feels a bit more distinctive than before but still familiar. It also keeps the Canyon in the sweet spot for shoppers who want something smaller than a full-size pickup without giving up the utility of a truck bed.
What makes the 2021 GMC Canyon appealing is its mix of capability and flexibility. The truck is noted for impressive towing and payload ratings, multiple powertrain options, and multiple body styles, so it can be tailored to different needs. It also offers helpful features that make it a good fit for weekend adventures or projects. At the same time, it is not without drawbacks: the interior materials feel cheap, the back seat is cramped, and the base engine is underwhelming. Owners also praise its value, appearance, and feature content, though some mention a stiff, loud ride and note that the diesel engine can feel short on power in certain situations.

First off, I Love my truck, however with that being said, I wish the back up camera had the overhead view. I also don’t understand having to have the radio/computer updated at a cost to the consumer. Otherwise, again, I love my truck.

If you want a used Canyon, the main long-term ownership risk is ending up with a truck that has been worked hard or maintained inconsistently, so condition and service history matter a lot.
What should I look for when buying a used 2021 GMC Canyon?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 78.9% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still check the history report carefully, because accident-free listings are common but not guaranteed. Prioritize a pre-purchase inspection that focuses on ride quality, cabin wear, and how the truck drives under load. It also makes sense to pay close attention to the back seat and interior condition, since those are areas where the Canyon’s compromises are more noticeable.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The Elevation Standard is the base trim and comes with 18-inch gloss-black aluminum wheels, signature LED running lights, the CornerStep rear bumper, black door handles and side mirrors, manually adjustable front seats, power locks, two USB ports, and a standard 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system. The Elevation adds LED fog lights, remote start, body-color door handles, a manually sliding rear window, a six-way power driver's seat, automatic climate control, auto-dimming rearview mirror, and aluminum interior accents. The AT4 is the off-road-inspired premium trim level with 17-inch dark metallic aluminum wheels, aggressive Goodyear all-terrain tires, red tow hooks, off-road suspension, and added underbody skid plates. The Denali adds polished aluminum wheels, polished exhaust tip, chrome side steps, chrome door handles, LED bed lighting, a spray-on bed-liner, a four-way power-adjustable front passenger seat, a larger 8-inch infotainment system, Bose premium audio, heated-and-cooled front seats, and a wireless charging pad.
- Powertrain: The Canyon comes standard with a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine making 200 horsepower and 191 pound-feet of torque through a six-speed automatic. A 3.6-liter V6 is optional on the Elevation trims and standard on the AT4 and Denali, with 308 hp and 275 lb-ft through an eight-speed automatic. A 2.8-liter Duramax four-cylinder turbodiesel is also available with 181 hp and 369 lb-ft through a six-speed automatic. The base gas four-cylinder has to work hard, so the V6 is the better choice if you want stronger everyday performance.
- Safety package: The standard safety equipment includes a rearview camera, tire pressure monitoring system, front-and-side-impact airbags, traction control, and the Teen Driver system. The available Driver Alert package adds forward-collision warning, lane-departure warning, and rear parking alert, and it is standard on the Denali but optional on other trim levels. The Denali also adds an upgraded HD backup camera and Hitch Guidance.
- Infotainment: The standard setup is a 7-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. It uses the latest GMC infotainment system and includes hard buttons and dials below the screen. An 8-inch screen is optional on the Elevation and AT4 trims and standard on the Denali, which also adds navigation, HD radio, and wireless charging.
- Fuel efficiency: The optional diesel engine returns 20 mpg city, 30 mpg highway, 23 combined with RWD, or 19 mpg city, 28 highway, 22 combined with 4WD. The base four-cylinder gas engine returns 19 mpg city, 25 highway, 22 combined with RWD or 19 mpg city, 24 highway, 21 combined with 4WD. The gas V6 returns 18 mpg city, 25 highway, 21 combined with RWD or 17 mpg city, 24 highway, 19 combined with 4WD.
Which 2021 GMC Canyon trim should I buy?
The 2021 GMC Canyon is offered in 4 trim levels: Elevation Standard, Elevation, AT4, and Denali.
Here's the short version:
- Elevation Standard: This is the entry point, and it gives you the Canyon’s core utility with the 7-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and the basic convenience features you need. It makes sense if you want the lowest-cost way into the lineup, but it is also the trim where the truck feels most stripped down.
- Elevation: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds useful everyday upgrades like LED fog lights, remote start, a power driver’s seat, automatic climate control, and a sliding rear window. It is the trim to target if you want a more comfortable truck without jumping all the way to the premium models.
- AT4: This is the right pick if you want the off-road-inspired setup, with all-terrain tires, skid plates, tow hooks, and off-road suspension. It also gets the V6 and 4WD, so it suits buyers who want more capability and a tougher look.
- Denali: This is the luxury-leaning choice, with the larger infotainment screen, Bose audio, heated-and-cooled front seats, wireless charging, and more upscale exterior and bed equipment. It is the trim to buy if you want the most features and the most polished feel.
The Driver Alert package is standard on the Denali and optional on the other trims, so safety-minded buyers should pay close attention to that equipment.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 GMC Canyon?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find decent options.
- Deal availability: 30.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,185 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.65% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 78.9% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $27,916, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2021 GMC Canyon's resale value?
The current average of $27,970 sits slightly below last year's $30,289.
That price movement suggests the Canyon has already absorbed some of its near-term depreciation, which can help if you buy now and plan to sell later. A softer market today can also mean less downside risk than when prices were higher a year ago.
For a future seller, the key is to buy a well-kept example with strong equipment and clean history, because those trucks are easier to move when it is your turn to sell. The Canyon’s broad appeal as a midsize pickup should help support demand, especially for shoppers who want truck utility without full-size bulk.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.25/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2021 GMC Canyon safe?
The 2021 GMC Canyon earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.
Standard safety features include a rearview camera, tire pressure monitoring system, front-and-side-impact airbags, traction control, and the Teen Driver system. The available Driver Alert package adds forward-collision warning, lane-departure warning, and rear parking alert, and it is standard on the Denali but optional on other trim levels. The Denali also gets an upgraded HD backup camera and Hitch Guidance.
Should I buy a 2021 GMC Canyon or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2021 if:
- 30.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 78.9% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.65% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.25/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- The refresh adds a new face and an AT4 off-road-inspired trim.
Consider the 2022 if:
- At $30,476, the 2022 costs more than the current year's $27,970 average.
- It adds a Denali Black Edition package and renames High Elevation to Elevation Premium.
The bottom line: The 2021 is the better starting point if you want the refreshed look and a softer used-market price. If you are willing to spend more for a slightly newer truck with a few extra appearance and package changes, the 2022 is the secondary path to consider.
