Why it stands out
The 2021 Ford Ranger stands out as a midsize pickup that balances everyday usefulness with off-road capability, especially when equipped with the new Tremor Off-Road Package. That package gives the Ranger a more terrain-focused identity, and the truck is described as a solid all-rounder in the segment. It also offers multiple body styles, which adds to its appeal for buyers who want a truck that can fit different needs.
Ford’s Tremor name is relatively new in the Ranger lineup, and for 2021 it signals a truck built for difficult terrain rather than high-speed desert running. The Ranger also earns credit for spaciousness and easy-to-use technology, both of which help it feel practical in daily use. At the same time, it has some drawbacks: the styling is uninspired, the interior materials feel cheap, and the technology is outdated.

Love the Ranger! It almost scratched every itch I was looking for in a truck. Cargurus did have heated seats as a description but they weren't an option on the truck. All n all im still very pleased.

The 2021 Ford Ranger is a very solid and responsive small truck. The I4 engine is a perfect match for this truck not only for responsiveness but towing capability. Truck is very quiet from an interior noise level and free of any squeaks or rattles.

How much does the 2021 Ford Ranger cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $26,632 |
| Year-Round Low | $26,302.13 |
| Year-Round High | $28,827.51 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $28,810 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −7.56% |
Prices have softened 7.56% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
With 2,310 listings available, you have a healthy amount of inventory to compare before you buy. If you find a listing below $26,302.13, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2021 Ford Ranger a good car?
Yes — the 2021 Ford Ranger earns a 5/5 user rating and a 7.0/10 expert rating. The model scores 8/10 across Look and feel and Technology.
Drivers consistently praise its spaciousness, comfort, and strong towing abilities, and they also note that it has plenty of power for everyday use and work. The Ranger’s use-case is broad: it’s positioned as a midsize pickup that can handle suburban life, job-site duty, and off-road driving without moving up to a larger truck.
The trade-offs are clear, though: the styling is uninspired, the interior materials feel cheap, and the technology is outdated. Even so, the Ranger’s broad appeal and practical body styles help it make sense if you want a truck that does a little of everything. With 29.0% of listings marked as good or great deals, there’s still room to shop selectively.
Is the 2021 Ford Ranger reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
User feedback points to a truck that feels solid, capable, and dependable, with enough power and comfort to inspire confidence over time. The expert evaluation also emphasizes that the Ranger is broadly appealing and refined for the segment, which supports the idea that it can be a truck you can count on for daily use and heavier tasks.
Ford’s powertrain setup is straightforward, with a turbocharged four-cylinder and 10-speed automatic, and that simplicity can be a plus for long-term ownership. The main used-buyer risk is that a truck used hard for towing or off-road driving may show wear more quickly, so condition matters a lot.
What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Ford Ranger?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 81.2% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still check the history report carefully, because a clean listing percentage does not replace a proper records review. Prioritize a pre-purchase inspection if the truck has towing, trail, or off-road use in its past. Focus on overall condition, especially the cabin, suspension, tires, and underbody.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The Ranger comes in XL, XLT, and Lariat trims, and the higher trim brings a more upscale cabin with simulated suede seat inserts, all-weather floor mats, and six upfitter switches. Base-trim trucks are simpler, so you should pay close attention to equipment gaps if you want more convenience features.
- Powertrain: Every Ranger uses a turbocharged 2.3-liter four-cylinder engine with a 10-speed automatic transmission. It makes 270 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque, and the Tremor setup adds off-road suspension tuning, Fox shocks, and extra ground clearance.
- Safety package: Co-Pilot360 includes forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keep assist, automatic high-beam headlights, blind-spot warning, and rear cross-traffic warning with trailer coverage. Adaptive cruise control is standard on Lariat, but it does not offer full-stop capability.
- Infotainment: The Ranger uses an 8-inch touchscreen with Sync 3, voice recognition, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, HD Radio, SiriusXM, AppLink with Waze and Ford + Alexa, FordPass Connect with a 4G WiFi hotspot, navigation, and a Bang & Olufsen premium sound system.
- Fuel efficiency: The Tremor version is rated at 19 mpg in the city and 19 mpg on the highway, for 19 mpg combined.
Which 2021 Ford Ranger trim should I buy?
The 2021 Ford Ranger is offered in 3 trim levels: XL, XLT, and Lariat.
Here's the short version:
- XL: This is the simplest Ranger, so it makes sense if you want the lowest-cost entry point and plan to keep the truck focused on utility.
- XLT: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds more everyday comfort and convenience without pushing you all the way to the top of the range.
- Lariat: Choose this if you want the most upscale Ranger experience, including the richer cabin presentation and standard adaptive cruise control.
The safety package is Co-Pilot360, and it brings forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keep assist, automatic high-beam headlights, blind-spot warning, and rear cross-traffic warning with trailer coverage.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Ford Ranger?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so it pays to compare listings carefully.
- Deal availability: 29.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 2,310 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.56% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 81.2% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $26,302.13, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2021 Ford Ranger's resale value?
The current average of $26,632 sits slightly below last year's $28,810.
That price movement suggests the Ranger has already absorbed some depreciation, which can help future resale stability if you buy at the right price. A softer market today may also give you more room to negotiate, which matters if you plan to sell or trade in later. Strong demand for a well-liked truck with broad utility can help support value over time, especially when the truck has been maintained well.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2021 Ford Ranger safe?
The Ranger gets an Acceptable rating in the IIHS small-overlap frontal-impact test for front-passenger protection, and it earns an overall four-star rating from NHTSA, mainly because of its three-star rollover resistance rating.
It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.
Ford’s Co-Pilot360 suite includes forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keep assist, automatic high-beam headlights, blind-spot warning, and rear cross-traffic warning with trailer coverage. Adaptive cruise control is standard on Lariat, but it does not include full-stop or stop-and-go capability.
The main caveat is that crashworthiness is good, but not great, and the headlights also receive a Marginal IIHS rating.
Should I buy a 2021 Ford Ranger or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2021 if:
- 29.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 81.2% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.56% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The Tremor package gives the Ranger a more terrain-focused identity and strong off-road capability.
Consider the 2020 if:
- At $24,657, the 2020 costs less than the current year's $26,632 average.
- It blends capability with technology.
The bottom line: If you want the better-balanced buy, the 2021 is the stronger pick because it combines a softer market, strong owner satisfaction, and the added appeal of the Tremor setup. If your priority is spending less up front, the 2020 is the more budget-friendly alternative and still delivers the core Ranger strengths.
