CarGurus Analysis: 2020 Ford Ranger
overall

Summary
With 201 currently listed for sale near Wilmington, DE and an average price of $22,900.00, 31.3% of 2020 Ford Rangers for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2020 Ford Ranger 4.79 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it an 8 / 10.
99.0% of 2020 Ranger models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2020 Ford Ranger stands out as a midsize pickup that blends capability with technology. It has decent fuel economy for a pickup truck, and its optional infotainment system is terrific. It also brings towing and hauling ability for tasks like pulling a boat trailer or carrying a truckload of home improvement gear. Those strengths make it appealing to buyers who want a truck that can handle weekend projects and outdoor gear without moving up to a larger pickup.
It is also described as stylish and powered by a powerful engine, which adds to its appeal. At the same time, the Ranger is not especially strong on cabin comfort or everyday driving dynamics, and its interior materials feel cheap. Advanced safety features are not standard, so shoppers who want a more upscale cabin or a fuller list of driver aids may find its compromises more noticeable.

The truck is extremely comfortable and stable on the road. Amenities are more than adequate and the quality exceeds expectations. Power is more than sufficient and although I was concerned about the 10 speed transmission, it operates flawlessly. Very pleased with this truck.

I had a Lariat. It was comfortable for me but not for people over 6 feet tall..It had every feature I wanted except Fords trailer backing system. It was a good value compared to the 150. It handled my 7200 pound boat and trailer on Tennessees hilly roads easily. Unfortunately I crashed it and it was totaled. It protected me in the cabin without serious injuries. I plan to replace it with a 2024 Ranger.

How much does the 2020 Ford Ranger cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $24,657 |
| Year-Round Low | $23,762.05 |
| Year-Round High | $26,794.22 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $26,790 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −7.96% |
Prices have softened 7.96% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 2,572 listings available, which suggests you have a decent amount of inventory to compare.
If you find a listing below $23,762.05, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2020 Ford Ranger a good car?
Yes — the 2020 Ford Ranger earns a 4.79/5 user rating, and experts give it an 8.00/10 overall score.
The model scores 9/10 across Performance and Technology.
Owners consistently praise its great value, enjoyable driving experience, and comfortable ride, while also calling out its sufficient power and high-quality features. On the downside, the expert review notes that it is not especially strong on cabin comfort or everyday driving dynamics, and its interior materials feel cheap.
For you, that means the Ranger makes the most sense if you want a midsize pickup that leans into capability, tech, and weekend utility rather than plushness. It is especially appealing if you need towing, hauling, or outdoor-gear flexibility without stepping up to a larger truck.
With 28.2% of listings marked as good or great deals, there is still room to shop selectively.
Is the 2020 Ford Ranger reliable?
Owners rate it 4.79/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
User feedback points to a truck that feels dependable, trouble-free, and strong enough to inspire confidence over time, with praise for its robust performance and good fuel economy. The expert review also emphasizes that the Ranger does what is asked of it and avoids falling below average in key truck duties, which supports the impression of a solid long-term ownership proposition.
Ford’s powertrain setup is straightforward, with a single engine and transmission combination, which can be a plus if you want fewer moving parts to sort through. The main ownership risk for used buyers is making sure the truck has been maintained properly and that any recall-related issues have been addressed.
What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Ford Ranger?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 76.7% — always verify the vehicle history report.
Start with the history report so you can confirm accident status, title status, and whether the truck has had any major repairs. Then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection that focuses on the transmission, drivability, and any signs of hard use, especially if the truck was used for towing or off-road driving. You should also pay close attention to cabin condition, since the Ranger’s interior materials are not a strong point and wear can show up quickly.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base XL is sparse, with vinyl floors, manual air conditioning, and manual front-seat adjustment, while the XLT adds more everyday convenience and is the trim CarGurus recommends moving up to. The Lariat brings the most upscale cabin touches, including leather upholstery and heated, power-adjustable front seats.
- Powertrain: Every trim uses a 2.3-liter EcoBoost turbocharged four-cylinder with 270 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque, paired with a ten-speed automatic. It is punchy at low speeds and on the highway, and properly equipped trucks can tow up to 7,500 pounds.
- Safety package: Ford CoPilot 360 adds lane-departure warning and avoidance, automatic high beams, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and reverse parking sensors. A Technology Package adds forward parking sensors and adaptive cruise control, and those features are not standard on the lower trim.
- Infotainment: The XLT gets SYNC 3 with an 8-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and available voice-activated navigation with pinch-to-zoom. The XL stays basic with an AM/FM stereo, four speakers, Bluetooth, and a USB port.
- Fuel efficiency: Rear-wheel drive returns 21 mpg city, 26 highway, 23 combined, while 4WD returns 22 mpg city, 24 highway, 22 combined.
Which 2020 Ford Ranger trim should I buy?
The 2020 Ford Ranger is offered in 3 trim levels: XL, XLT, and Lariat.
Here's the short version:
- XL: This is the least expensive way into the Ranger, but it is very basic, with vinyl floors, manual air conditioning, and a simple audio setup. You should choose it only if price matters most and you are comfortable giving up convenience features.
- XLT: This is the best-value trim because it adds the features most shoppers will actually notice every day, including 17-inch aluminum wheels, remote keyless entry, dual-zone climate control, cruise control, SYNC 3, and the 8-inch touchscreen. It is also the trim that brings Ford CoPilot 360, so it strikes the best balance of value and equipment.
- Lariat: This is the right pick if you want the most upscale Ranger, with 18-inch machined aluminum wheels, leather upholstery, heated and power-adjustable front seats, push-button start, ambient lighting, and the premium B&O sound system.
Ford CoPilot 360 is added on the XLT, so that trim is the key step up if you want the most useful safety and convenience features.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Ford Ranger?
This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.
- Deal availability: 28.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 2,572 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.96% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 76.7% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $23,762.05, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2020 Ford Ranger's resale value?
The current average of $24,657 sits slightly below last year's $26,790.
That price movement suggests the Ranger has already absorbed some depreciation, which can help future resale stability if you buy at the right price. If you shop near the lower end of the range, you give yourself more cushion when it comes time to sell. Strong demand for well-equipped midsize trucks can also help support values, especially for trucks with desirable features and clean histories.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.79/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2020 Ford Ranger safe?
The Ranger earns Good scores in most IIHS crash tests, and it earns an overall four-star rating from NHTSA. It earns five-star ratings in most crash tests, though it netted four-star ratings in front passenger side testing and three-star ratings in rollover crash testing.
It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.
The Ranger comes standard with front- and side-impact airbags, a child-seat anchoring system, a tire-pressure monitoring system, automatic headlights, automatic emergency braking, forward collision avoidance, and pedestrian detection. Ford CoPilot 360 adds lane-departure warning and avoidance, automatic high beams, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and reverse parking sensors, while an available Technology Package adds forward parking sensors and adaptive cruise control.
One caveat is that advanced driver-assistance features are not standard on every trim, so you need to move up the lineup if you want a fuller safety suite.
Should I buy a 2020 Ford Ranger or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2020 if:
- 28.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 76.7% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.96% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.79/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It combines strong towing and hauling ability with useful tech and a single, punchy turbo engine.
Consider the 2019 if:
- At $23,034, the 2019 costs less than the current year's $24,657 average.
- It offers a simple, price-focused return to the U.S. market with strong power and straightforward appeal.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $26,632, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $24,657 average.
- It adds a more terrain-focused identity with the Tremor package and broader everyday practicality.
The bottom line: You should lean toward the 2020 if you want the best mix of price, capability, and tech in this generation. If your budget is tighter, the 2019 can save you money, while the 2021 makes sense if you want the newer off-road-oriented direction and are willing to pay more.
