Why it stands out
The 2021 Ford Mustang stands out by blending its long-running pony-car character with modern technology and a distinctly retro attitude. It is described as a hyper-stylized package that calls upon its past while embracing the present, and Ford added a new Mach 1 trim for 2021. That combination gives the Mustang a broad appeal: it remains a performance car with a strong identity, but its trim lineup and feature list are meant to make it approachable for enthusiasts looking for relatively affordable driving fun.
It also has clear everyday tradeoffs. The Mustang is fun to drive and offers a manual transmission, but it comes with poor visibility, a cramped back seat, and not much cargo space. Those limitations are part of the package, yet they help define the car as a style-first sports coupe that prioritizes driving enjoyment and character over practicality.

The 2021 Mustang GT Premium is fantastic! Digital dash, comfortable leather seats (we have the 401A package), and that 5.0 Cayote engine...nothing sounds like it! Also, in my opinion, this generation is the BEST LOOKING Mustang of all time! Fantastic!

How much does the 2021 Ford Mustang cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $30,796 |
| Year-Round Low | $28,488 |
| Year-Round High | $31,813 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $31,182 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −1.24% |
Prices have softened 1.24% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 2,106 listings available, which gives you a solid pool of options to compare on price, trim, and condition.
Is the 2021 Ford Mustang a good car?
Yes — the 2021 Ford Mustang earns a 4.71/5 from owners and an 8.17/10 expert rating. The model scores 9/10 across Performance, Cost effectiveness, and Safety.
Owners consistently praise the Mustang’s performance, styling, and feature content, and many also like the excitement of driving it and the appeal of the GT’s V8 power. The main trade-offs are value concerns, pricing that some reviewers feel is inflated, and occasional complaints about feature availability and warranty experiences.
That fits the Mustang’s role as a style-first sports car: it gives you relatively affordable driving fun, modern tech, and a strong identity, but it does not try to be a practical all-rounder. The market still looks reasonably healthy, with 30.8% of listings marked as good or great deals.
Is the 2021 Ford Mustang reliable?
Owners rate it 4.71/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
Owner feedback points to a car that many drivers feel good about living with, especially when it comes to performance and overall enjoyment. The review summary also suggests the Mustang can be a dependable choice for buyers who want a car they can count on for fun driving and strong character.
The expert evaluation reinforces that impression by describing the Mustang as a well-developed sports car with modern technology and a broad trim lineup. On the cost side, the model’s maintenance and ownership appeal is helped by its relatively approachable positioning for enthusiasts.
For used buyers, the biggest long-term ownership risk is less about outright durability and more about how the car was driven and maintained, since performance cars often vary widely in wear.
What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Ford Mustang?
At 72.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle-history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you are considering a higher-performance trim or a car with modified parts. Focus on body condition, signs of hard use, and whether the equipment matches the listing, since owner feedback mentions concerns about feature availability.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base EcoBoost includes 17-inch alloy wheels, manual seats, pushbutton start, power windows and locks, a leather-wrapped shift knob, 4G LTE WiFi, a six-speaker stereo, and the basic Sync system with a 4.2-inch touchscreen and voice control. EcoBoost Premium adds 18-inch wheels, LED fog lights, ambient lighting, dual-zone climate control, power-adjustable heated and cooled front seats, two USB ports, and Sync 3. GT adds the 5.0-liter V8 and exterior performance cues, while GT Premium adds leather-trimmed front seats, vinyl rear seats, and two smart-charging USB ports. Mach 1 adds more performance-focused hardware plus a fully digital instrument panel and other upgrades.
- Powertrain: The EcoBoost uses a 2.3-liter turbocharged four-cylinder with 310 horsepower and 350 pound-feet of torque, or 330 hp with the High-Performance Package. The GT uses a 5.0-liter V8 with 460 hp and 420 lb-ft, while the Mach 1 raises output to 480 hp. Both engines can be paired with a six-speed manual or a 10-speed automatic, and both are rear-wheel drive.
- Safety package: Ford Co-Pilot360 is standard and includes automatic emergency braking, forward-collision warning, pedestrian detection, lane-departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, rain-sensing wipers, and automatic high beams. Adaptive cruise control and parking sensors still cost extra.
- Infotainment: The base car gets a 4.2-inch display with voice controls. Sync 3 brings an 8-inch touchscreen plus Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and it is standard on Premium trims or available as an option.
- Fuel efficiency: The 2.3-liter EcoBoost with the 10-speed automatic returns 21 mpg city, 32 mpg highway, and 25 mpg combined. The V8-powered GT with the automatic returns 19 mpg city, 24 mpg highway, and 19 mpg combined. The Mach 1 is estimated at 15 mpg city, 23 mpg highway, and 18 mpg combined.
Which 2021 Ford Mustang trim should I buy?
The 2021 Ford Mustang is offered in 5 trim levels: EcoBoost, EcoBoost Premium, GT, GT Premium, and Mach 1.
Here's the short version:
- EcoBoost: This is the value play if you want the Mustang experience at the lowest entry price. You still get the core styling, standard CoPilot360 safety tech, and the basic infotainment setup, so it covers the essentials without pushing the budget too far.
- EcoBoost Premium: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds the nicer cabin and infotainment upgrades that make daily use easier, including Sync 3, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, heated and cooled front seats, and dual-zone climate control.
- GT: Choose this if you want the V8 experience and care more about performance than luxury features. It adds the 5.0-liter engine and the visual and mechanical character that define the Mustang for many enthusiasts.
- GT Premium: This is the right pick if you want the V8 but also want a more upscale interior and more comfort features. It layers in leather-trimmed front seats and other premium touches that make the car feel more complete.
- Mach 1: This is the enthusiast choice if you want the most focused factory performance setup in the lineup. It adds serious hardware and a more aggressive character, but it makes the most sense if you specifically want a higher-performance Mustang rather than the broadest value.
Ford Co-Pilot360 is standard across the lineup, but adaptive cruise control and parking sensors still require extra cost.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Ford Mustang?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you have room to shop carefully without waiting for a dramatic bargain.
- Deal availability: 30.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 2,106 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 1.24% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 72.7% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $28,488, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2021 Ford Mustang's resale value?
The current average of $30,796 sits slightly below last year's $31,182.
That mild decline suggests the market has eased a bit, which can help you buy more confidently now, but it also means future resale gains may be limited if prices continue to soften. If you plan to sell later, condition and trim choice will matter a lot, especially because performance cars can separate quickly into stronger and weaker examples.
The Mustang’s broad appeal should help support demand, particularly for well-kept cars with desirable equipment and strong enthusiast appeal. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.71/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2021 Ford Mustang safe?
The 2021 Ford Mustang earns Good ratings from IIHS and five-star ratings from NHTSA.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
Ford Co-Pilot360 is standard and includes automatic emergency braking, forward-collision warning, pedestrian detection, lane-departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, rain-sensing wipers, and automatic high beams. Adaptive cruise control and parking sensors are still optional, so you may need to step up or pay extra if you want a fuller convenience-and-safety setup.
The main caveat is that some advanced features are not standard, so you should verify the exact equipment on any used listing you are considering.
Should I buy a 2021 Ford Mustang or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2021 if:
- 30.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 72.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 1.24% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.71/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- Ford added the new Mach 1 trim for 2021, expanding the lineup with a more performance-focused option.
Consider the 2020 if:
- At $26,142, the 2020 costs less than the current year's $30,796 average.
- It offers multiple powertrain choices and strong value for money.
The bottom line: If you want the newer model-year lineup and the added Mach 1 option, the 2021 is the better target. If your priority is spending less up front, the 2020 is the smarter value play, especially if you find one in strong condition with the equipment you want.
