CarGurus Analysis: 2021 Ford Escape
overall

Summary
With 4,396 currently listed for sale and an average price of $16,551.00, 33.0% of 2021 Ford Escapes for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2021 Ford Escape 4 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 6.67 / 10.
80.7% of 2021 Escape models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2021 Ford Escape is a compact crossover SUV that matters to Ford’s lineup because it serves as a logical choice for shoppers who might otherwise have looked at the brand’s sedans or hatchbacks. Redesigned for 2020, it carries that more car-like styling into 2021 with only minimal changes, so this model year is best understood as a refinement of the updated Escape rather than a major reinvention. The trim-level lineup of S, SE, SEL, and Titanium carries over as well, and the available powertrain choices give it broad appeal for buyers who want flexibility.
What stands out most about the 2021 Escape is its combination of multiple powertrain options, great ride quality, and easy-to-use technology. It also emphasizes fuel efficiency, which fits the direction Ford took with the redesign. At the same time, it is not without drawbacks: the styling is described as uninspired, the base engine is underwhelming, and the interior materials feel cheap. Even so, the 2021 Ford Escape remains appealing as a practical, mainstream crossover with a comfortable ride and a straightforward feature set.

This car is best with the higher trim and solid 2.0 Turbo awd drive train. One of the best values in the segment. Also plenty of room for performance increase if thats your thing.

Bought this vehicle certified Gold certified for my daughter. Great value vs. competitors, great standard safety features and great mpg. You wont win any drag races, but the engine is absolutely fine. The car is sharp looking and practical. And Ford dealers are everywhere.

The features were good. The reliability rating is terrible. The fact that it had 2 owners with 7000 miles on it was a turn off.

Is the 2021 Ford Escape a good car?
Generally — the 2021 Ford Escape earns a 4/5 user rating and a 6.67/10 expert rating.
The model scores 8/10 across Cost effectiveness and Safety.
It stands out as a compact crossover that gives you multiple powertrain choices, a comfortable ride, and easy-to-use technology. It also fits shoppers who want a practical, mainstream SUV with a straightforward feature set and fuel-efficiency focus.
The trade-offs are clear: the styling is uninspired, the base engine is underwhelming, and the interior materials feel cheap.
With 32.6% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2021 Ford Escape reliable?
Owners rate it 4/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
The Escape’s redesign emphasis on fuel efficiency and broad powertrain choice suggests a model built to serve a wide range of daily-driving needs. Its expert notes also point to a smooth transition between electric and gasoline propulsion in the hybrid, which supports the case for well-rounded drivability.
Ford’s warranty coverage includes a three-year, 60,000-mile bumper-to-bumper plan and a five-year, 60,000-mile powertrain warranty. That helps reduce early ownership exposure, though used buyers should still pay close attention to maintenance history and how the vehicle was driven.
What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Ford Escape?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 81.2% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still check the report carefully, because a clean listing percentage does not replace a proper history review. Prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re considering a higher-mileage example or a vehicle with optional equipment. Focus on overall condition, interior wear, and whether the features you want are actually present on the trim you’re looking at.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: Base S models have the smallest 4.2-inch touchscreen and miss out on the larger display and added convenience features found higher up the range.
- Powertrain: You get a 1.5-liter turbocharged three-cylinder with 181 horsepower and 191 pound-feet of torque, plus an available 2.0-liter turbo-four with 250 hp and 280 lb-ft; the hybrid and plug-in hybrid options broaden efficiency choices.
- Safety package: Ford Co-Pilot360 includes automatic high beams, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, lane-keep assist, lane-departure warning, forward collision warning, and automatic emergency braking. Co-Pilot360 Assist+ adds adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go and lane centering, traffic-sign recognition, park assist, and Evasive Steering Assist.
- Infotainment: Base models get a 4.2-inch touchscreen, while SE models move to an 8-inch screen with pinch-and-zoom capability. Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and a built-in 4G LTE WiFi hotspot are standard, but wireless smartphone integration is not offered.
- Fuel efficiency: The base engine returns 30 mpg combined (28 city/34 highway) with FWD and 28 mpg combined (26 city/31 highway) with AWD. The 2.0-liter AWD setup is rated at 26 mpg combined (23 city/31 highway). The hybrid reaches 41 mpg combined with FWD and 40 mpg combined with AWD, while the plug-in hybrid delivers 37 miles of electric range and 105 MPGe combined in electric mode.
Which 2021 Ford Escape trim should I buy?
The 2021 Ford Escape is offered in 4 trim levels: S, SE, SEL, and Titanium.
Here's the short version:
- Base trim: The S is the most stripped-down choice, with the smallest touchscreen and fewer comfort and tech upgrades than the higher trims.
- Sweet-spot trim: The SE is the best value pick because it adds the larger 8-inch touchscreen and keeps the Escape’s core strengths intact.
- Premium/top trim: The Titanium is the most upscale choice, adding a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 10-speaker Bang & Olufsen sound system.
- Off-road trim: None of the trims is positioned as a dedicated off-road model, so this isn’t the place to shop if that’s your priority.
The safety package is standard across the lineup under Ford Co-Pilot360, while Co-Pilot360 Assist+ is optional for added driver-assistance features.

- Price trend: Prices have softened 12.63% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $16,555.51, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2021 Ford Escape's resale value?
The current average of $16,552 sits slightly below last year's $18,945.
That price movement suggests the Escape has already absorbed a meaningful amount of depreciation, which can help limit near-term value loss for a future owner. If you buy at the right price, you may have a better chance of holding value than someone who paid closer to the prior-year average.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2021 Ford Escape safe?
The 2021 Escape earns a Top Safety Pick rating from IIHS and a five-star overall safety rating from NHTSA, with five-star ratings in frontal and side crash tests and four-star ratings in rollover crash tests.
It earns a 8/10 safety score from our experts.
Ford Co-Pilot360 is standard and includes automatic high beams, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, lane-keep assist, lane-departure warning, forward collision warning, and automatic emergency braking. The optional Co-Pilot360 Assist+ package adds adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go and lane centering, traffic-sign recognition, park assist, and Evasive Steering Assist.
IIHS also noted that headlight performance varies by trim, with Acceptable and Marginal results depending on configuration.
Should I buy a 2021 Ford Escape or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2021 if:
- 32.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 81.2% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 12.63% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- It keeps the redesigned Escape’s multiple powertrain choices, easy-to-use tech, and fuel-efficiency focus.
Consider the 2020 if:
- At $15,515, the 2020 costs less than the current year's $16,552 average.
- It aims to deliver more than the basics with impressive tech, performance, and cabin quality.
The bottom line: If you want the newer year with a softer market price and the same broad Escape formula, the 2021 is the better default choice. If your priority is spending less up front, the 2020 is the more budget-friendly path and still brings many of the same core strengths.
