CarGurus Analysis: 2021 Dodge Challenger
overall

Summary
With 249 currently listed for sale near Indianapolis, IN and an average price of $40,198, 34.1% of 2021 Dodge Challengers for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2021 Dodge Challenger 4.88 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7 / 10.
89.6% of 2021 Challenger models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2021 Dodge Challenger stands out because it is unapologetically focused on straight-line speed and style rather than all-around versatility. It is described as a single-minded sled of straight-line speed, and that character is part of what makes it feel like a legend. The car also offers incredible performance value, multiple powertrain options, and plenty of cargo space, which gives it a broader appeal than its old-school personality might suggest.
That same personality comes with tradeoffs. The Challenger’s handling is outclassed by the competition, its back seat is cramped, and advanced safety features are not standard. Even so, the 2021 Dodge Challenger remains distinctive because it combines serious performance with a high-tech dragster feel and a design that has aged into something memorable rather than ordinary.

This is an amazing car! It is fast, and feels extremely solid. The car is very comfortable to drive, and the placement of gauges and instruments is quite sensible. Apple CarPlay support is excellent, and integrates well with the vehicle. The vehicle also offers UConnect and Android. The entertainment system is high quality. The only negative is that there is no facility for automatic raising of the front windows.

What an amazing car! I bought a 2021 GT less than a week ago and I love it. I cant believe how many features the car has. Just to name a few: Driver seat memory, heated seats, heated steering wheel, launch control, adaptive cruise control, the Harmon\Kardon sound system, it has everything you could ever want and more. Highly recommend to anyone thinking about a Challenger!

Is the 2021 Dodge Challenger a good car?
Yes — the 2021 Dodge Challenger earns a 4.88/5 user rating and a 7.00/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Performance at 9/10.
Drivers consistently praise its power, comfort, and unique styling, and they also highlight the technology and driving experience. The Challenger’s use case is pretty clear: you’re buying it for straight-line speed, character, and a high-tech dragster feel, not for all-around versatility. The main trade-offs are handling that trails the competition and a cramped back seat.
With 31.1% of listings marked as good or great deals, there’s enough market activity to keep shopping options interesting.
Is the 2021 Dodge Challenger reliable?
Owners rate it 4.88/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
User feedback points to a car that owners feel good about living with over time, with repeated praise for power, comfort, and the overall driving experience. The expert review also describes the Challenger as offering reliable power and backing it with a full warranty, which supports its appeal for buyers who want a durable-feeling muscle car. The performance write-up adds that Dodge doesn’t let much destroy the drivetrain, reinforcing the sense of mechanical toughness.
If you’re buying used, the biggest long-term ownership risk is less about the engine’s character and more about finding a well-kept example that hasn’t been abused.
What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Dodge Challenger?
At 70.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has performance upgrades or a long list of options. Focus on condition, signs of hard use, and whether the car has been maintained consistently. Because this model’s appeal is tied so closely to performance, you’ll want to make sure the example you choose still feels tight, clean, and properly cared for.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base car is described as decent but not especially impressive, while upper trims add softer Nappa leather seats, contrast stitching, faux-suede headliners, carbon fiber on the dash, and thicker steering wheels with metal shift paddles. The base trim also misses the more dramatic visual and cabin upgrades that make higher trims feel more special.
- Powertrain: The lineup ranges from a 3.6-liter V6 in the SXT and GT to a 5.7-liter V8 in the R/T, a 6.4-liter V8 in the R/T Scat Pack, and supercharged 6.2-liter V8 variants above that. The V6 is quiet and efficient but not fun, while the V8s deliver the character and urgency most shoppers want.
- Safety package: The available driver-assistance setup includes blind-spot monitoring and adaptive cruise control, and optional forward emergency braking is also mentioned. No driver assists are standard, so you should not assume a used example has the safety equipment you want.
- Infotainment: The standard system uses a 7-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. An 8.4-inch screen is recommended, and the system also offers Performance Pages for real-time power, torque, G-force, and acceleration data.
- Fuel efficiency: The performance write-up says the car can sip fuel at 30 mpg or 20 mpg, depending on configuration, while the most extreme versions can burn through a tank quickly.
Which 2021 Dodge Challenger trim should I buy?
The 2021 Dodge Challenger is offered in 3 trim levels: SXT, GT, and R/T.
Here's the short version:
- SXT: This is the entry point, and it gives you the Challenger’s style and basic tech at the lowest price. It’s the trim to choose if you want the look and space without stretching your budget, but it’s also the least exciting mechanically.
- GT: This trim keeps the V6 formula but adds a bit more flexibility, including available all-wheel drive. It makes sense if you want the Challenger shape with a little more everyday usability, though it still doesn’t solve the V6’s lack of fun.
- R/T: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it brings the 375-hp V8, a six-speed manual, active exhaust, and upgraded suspension. If you want the Challenger to feel like a real muscle car, this is the one to target.
Safety equipment remains limited overall, so don’t expect standard driver assists even on higher trims.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Dodge Challenger?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully without feeling rushed.
- Deal availability: 31.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 2,392 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 4.69% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 70.1% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $30,195, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2021 Dodge Challenger's resale value?
The current average of $31,509 sits slightly below last year's $33,061.
That decline suggests the market has softened, which can help you as a buyer today but may temper resale upside if you plan to sell soon. For a future seller, the key takeaway is that pricing has moved down enough to make the car more accessible now, but not so sharply that it appears to have lost broad appeal. Strong demand for the Challenger’s character and performance should still help support values, especially for well-kept examples.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.88/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2021 Dodge Challenger safe?
The 2021 Dodge Challenger earns a five-star overall rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), but the government's tests mask the weaknesses of this old body structure. Yes, it earns four out of five stars for the driver and five stars for the passenger in a frontal crash, five stars for side impact, and four stars for rollover testing. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) rates it good in only two tests, acceptable for roof strength and head restraints, marginal for the driver in the small overlap front, and poor for body structure.
It earns a 4/10 safety score from our experts.
The available driver-assistance features are limited to blind-spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control, and optional forward emergency braking. That sparse safety equipment lineup is worth keeping in mind if you want a used Challenger for daily driving.
Should I buy a 2021 Dodge Challenger or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2021 if:
- 31.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 70.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 4.69% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.88/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2021 stands out for its straight-line speed focus, multiple powertrain choices, and high-tech dragster personality.
Consider the 2020 if:
- At $28,928, the 2020 costs less than the current year's $31,509 average.
- It blends retro styling with modern technology and heart-pounding performance.
The bottom line: If you want the strongest mix of current pricing, broad inventory, and the 2021’s distinctive performance character, this is the year to target. If your priority is spending less up front, the 2020 is the better value play, especially if you’re comfortable giving up some of the newer-year market context.
