2021 Chevrolet Bolt EV test drive
overall

The Bolt EV is almost the template for the ideal affordable EV commuter car… almost.
Spend any time reading the news, and you’ll likely read about electric vehicles. They are influencing the stock prices of major automakers, and in turn, those automakers are investing heavily into a burgeoning market of EV startups. And yet, electric cars make up an incredibly small portion of the new car market. For all the news and hype, there are only a handful of actual models on the road today. They fall into two categories: larger, luxury-minded EVs like those offered by Tesla, and smaller, minimalist offerings such as the Nissan Leaf and the 2021 Chevrolet Bolt EV.
Like the Leaf, the Bolt does things differently from Tesla. It uses a smaller battery pack and maximizes the efficiency of its nimble platform. The Bolt EV does not have the range or acceleration of the Teslas, but for many Americans, an EV like the Bolt EV is something closer to what they can afford. But is the Bolt EV right for you? Read on to learn more about this economic electric vehicle.

Pros: -LOVE how it drives and handles the road -Feels spacious despite being compact -Easy features to use -No more gas and limited maintenance! -Awesome battery range Cons (especially related to the LT trim level): -Road noise is still very loud even though its nothing is coming from your engine. -6-speaker sound system absolutely sucks -Missing spot or sunglasses -No USB-c -No leather seats -No all-weather mats -No electric seat adjustments -Lots of plastic on the interior -No window tinting -No automatic windshield wipers -No 3D backup camera view -Get get the stupid XM radio to stop blasting me out every time I turn on my car (Apple Car play is much quieter) The 2022 (especially the 2LT trim level) looks like it is a very nice upgrade on the interior compared to the 2021.

Best value for the money anywhere really nice for driving. Really nice for maintenance and really nice. If you do have to work on it it’s very simple insurance cost are low. Initial cost to purchase is low really hard to beat. Rear seat Comfort is excellent. Front seat Comfort also excellent . handles very well. Accelerates beautiful , can pass most others in a heartbeat if you’re talking about gas cars.

How much does the 2021 Chevrolet Bolt EV cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $17,376 |
| Year-Round Low | $14,271 |
| Year-Round High | $17,388 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $15,472 |
| Change vs. Last Year | +12.31% |
Prices are up 12.31% year-over-year — a sign of continued demand for this model year.
There are 159 listings available, which gives you a modest amount of inventory to compare.
Is the 2021 Chevrolet Bolt EV a good car?
The 2021 Chevrolet Bolt EV is a strong fit if you want an affordable electric commuter with real-world practicality, and its 3.8/5 user rating and 7.17/10 expert rating show that it lands in the solid-but-not-perfect range.
The model scores 8/10 across Look and feel, Technology, and Safety.
Drivers consistently praise its driving experience, spacious cabin, impressive battery range, low maintenance costs, and value for money. Those strengths line up well with its role as a smaller, minimalist EV that is meant to be easy to live with and less expensive to run.
The trade-offs are just as clear: the interior materials feel cheap, the seats can be uncomfortable, and owners also mention road noise and a subpar sound system. The Bolt EV makes the most sense if you care more about efficiency, range, and everyday usability than luxury touches or a quiet, plush cabin.
With 36.5% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have a decent chance of finding one priced competitively.
Is the 2021 Chevrolet Bolt EV reliable?
The 2021 Chevrolet Bolt EV is built around a simple electric layout, and that usually supports easier day-to-day ownership than a more complex gas-powered car.
Owners describe it as reliable, dependable, and trouble-free, with praise for low maintenance costs and long-term value. The electric motor’s instant torque and the battery’s floor-mounted placement also support a stable, predictable driving experience that feels well suited to regular commuting.
The battery pack is covered by an eight-year/100,000-mile warranty, which helps reduce long-term ownership risk for used buyers, though you should still check battery condition and charging history carefully.
What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Chevrolet Bolt EV?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 86.2% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still review the vehicle history report, confirm the battery and charging system behave normally, and prioritize a thorough inspection of the cabin, controls, and seats. Because this is an EV, you should also pay attention to how the car was charged over time and whether the range still feels consistent with expectations.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The LT comes with alloy wheels, remote start, a 10.2-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, WiFi hotspot, automatic climate control, dual USB ports, Bluetooth connectivity, and satellite radio. The Premier adds leather upholstery, a rear center armrest, heated front and rear seats, a heated steering wheel, and a removable cargo load floor.
- Powertrain: The Bolt EV uses a front-wheel-drive electric motor with a 66-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery pack. It makes 200 horsepower and 266 pound-feet of torque, with strong low-end response and a claimed zero-to-60-mph time of 6.5 seconds.
- Safety package: Chevy’s Teen Driver feature is standard, while Driver Confidence I adds rear parking sensors, lane-change alert, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert. Driver Confidence II adds automatic high beams, forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, a following distance indicator, lane-departure warning, and lane-keep assist.
- Infotainment: The LT includes a 10.2-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, plus a WiFi hotspot. The system also supports a fully digital instrument panel and energy-focused displays.
- Range & charging: The Bolt EV has an estimated 259-mile range. Level 1 charging adds about four miles of range per hour, Level 2 charging adds about 25 miles per hour, and DC fast charging can add up to 100 miles of range in 30 minutes.
- Battery health: Check battery state-of-health, ask how often the car was charged at home versus on DC fast chargers, and confirm how much of the battery warranty remains.
Which 2021 Chevrolet Bolt EV trim should I buy?
The 2021 Chevrolet Bolt EV is offered in 2 trim levels: LT and Premier.
Here's the short version:
- LT: This is the value play if you want the Bolt EV’s core strengths without paying for extras. You still get the 10.2-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, WiFi hotspot, automatic climate control, and the same efficient electric driving experience, so it suits buyers who want the lowest-cost path into the model.
- Premier: This is the better choice if you want a more comfortable and better-equipped cabin. The heated front and rear seats, heated steering wheel, leather upholstery, and removable cargo load floor make it the more appealing pick for shoppers who plan to spend more time in the car.
The safety-package upgrades are important here: advanced driver-assistance features are bundled into option packages rather than being standard across the lineup.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Chevrolet Bolt EV?
This looks like a moderate market for selective buyers, with enough inventory and enough deal activity to reward careful shopping.
- Deal availability: 36.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 159 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices are up 12.31% year-over-year.
- Clean inventory: 86.2% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $14,271, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2021 Chevrolet Bolt EV's resale value?
The current average of $17,376 sits slightly above last year's $15,472.
That upward move suggests the Bolt EV has held buyer interest well, especially for shoppers focused on affordable EV ownership. If you buy one now and keep it in good condition, the combination of strong range, low running costs, and steady demand should help support resale value later.
For a future seller, the key will be condition and battery health. A clean history, a well-kept interior, and evidence of sensible charging habits should help your listing stand out in a market where buyers are still comparing value closely.
Is the 2021 Chevrolet Bolt EV safe?
The 2021 Chevrolet Bolt EV earns a five-star overall rating from NHTSA and a Top Safety Pick rating from IIHS.
It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.
Chevy’s Teen Driver feature is standard, and the available driver-assistance packages add useful protection. Driver Confidence I brings rear parking sensors, lane-change alert, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert. Driver Confidence II adds automatic high beams, forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, a following distance indicator, lane-departure warning, and lane-keep assist.
The main caveat is that many of the advanced safety features are not standard, so you need to check carefully which package a used example has.
Should I buy a 2021 Chevrolet Bolt EV or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2021 if:
- 36.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 86.2% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices are up 12.31% year-over-year.
- It keeps the Bolt EV’s affordable, range-focused commuter formula with strong everyday usability.
Consider the 2022 if:
