2021 Chevrolet Bolt EV test drive
overall

The Bolt EV is almost the template for the ideal affordable EV commuter car… almost.
Spend any time reading the news, and you’ll likely read about electric vehicles. They are influencing the stock prices of major automakers, and in turn, those automakers are investing heavily into a burgeoning market of EV startups. And yet, electric cars make up an incredibly small portion of the new car market. For all the news and hype, there are only a handful of actual models on the road today. They fall into two categories: larger, luxury-minded EVs like those offered by Tesla, and smaller, minimalist offerings such as the Nissan Leaf and the 2021 Chevrolet Bolt EV.
Like the Leaf, the Bolt does things differently from Tesla. It uses a smaller battery pack and maximizes the efficiency of its nimble platform. The Bolt EV does not have the range or acceleration of the Teslas, but for many Americans, an EV like the Bolt EV is something closer to what they can afford. But is the Bolt EV right for you? Read on to learn more about this economic electric vehicle.

Pros: -LOVE how it drives and handles the road -Feels spacious despite being compact -Easy features to use -No more gas and limited maintenance! -Awesome battery range Cons (especially related to the LT trim level): -Road noise is still very loud even though its nothing is coming from your engine. -6-speaker sound system absolutely sucks -Missing spot or sunglasses -No USB-c -No leather seats -No all-weather mats -No electric seat adjustments -Lots of plastic on the interior -No window tinting -No automatic windshield wipers -No 3D backup camera view -Get get the stupid XM radio to stop blasting me out every time I turn on my car (Apple Car play is much quieter) The 2022 (especially the 2LT trim level) looks like it is a very nice upgrade on the interior compared to the 2021.

Best value for the money anywhere really nice for driving. Really nice for maintenance and really nice. If you do have to work on it it’s very simple insurance cost are low. Initial cost to purchase is low really hard to beat. Rear seat Comfort is excellent. Front seat Comfort also excellent . handles very well. Accelerates beautiful , can pass most others in a heartbeat if you’re talking about gas cars.

How much does the 2021 Chevrolet Bolt EV cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $17,264 |
| Year-Round Low | $14,276.39 |
| Year-Round High | $17,260.19 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $15,316 |
| Change vs. Last Year | +12.72% |
Prices are up 12.72% year-over-year — a sign of continued demand for this model year.
There are 155 listings available, which gives you a modest amount of inventory to compare before you buy.
If you find a listing below $14,276.39, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2021 Chevrolet Bolt EV a good car?
It’s a solid fit if you want an affordable EV commuter with strong everyday usability, though you should weigh a few comfort and refinement compromises. The user rating is 3.8/5, and the expert rating is 7.17/10.
The model scores 8/10 across Look and feel, Technology, and Safety.
Owners repeatedly praise the driving experience, spaciousness, impressive battery range, and low maintenance costs. The Bolt EV’s use case is clear: it’s aimed at buyers who want an electric car that stays accessible rather than pushing into luxury pricing.
The main trade-offs are the cheap-feeling interior materials, uncomfortable seats, loud road noise, and a subpar sound system. With 30.3% of listings marked as good or great deals, the market still gives you room to shop carefully.
Is the 2021 Chevrolet Bolt EV reliable?
The Bolt EV is positioned as a practical, low-maintenance electric commuter, and owner feedback backs up that reputation with praise for low maintenance costs and long-term value. The expert review also emphasizes its efficient, around-town design and the way its battery placement supports a stable driving feel.
That said, used-EV ownership still calls for battery diligence. You should check battery state-of-health, confirm how the car has been charged over time, and review how much of the battery warranty remains so you understand long-term risk before you buy.
What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Chevrolet Bolt EV?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 83.9% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still run a history report on any candidate, even if the listing looks clean. Prioritize a pre-purchase inspection that focuses on battery condition, charging behavior, and cabin wear, since comfort and interior quality are recurring weak spots. It also helps to confirm that the car’s equipment matches the trim and package level advertised.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The LT comes with the 10.2-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, remote start, alloy wheels, automatic climate control, dual USB ports, Bluetooth connectivity, satellite radio, and a WiFi hotspot. The Premier adds leather upholstery, a rear center armrest, heated front seats, heated rear seats, a heated steering wheel, and a removable cargo load floor.
- Powertrain: The Bolt EV uses a front-wheel-drive electric motor with a 66-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery pack. Output is 200 horsepower and 266 pound-feet of torque, and the instant torque helps it feel quick around town.
- Safety package: Chevy’s Teen Driver feature is standard, while advanced driver assistance features are bundled into option packages. Driver Confidence I adds rear parking sensors, lane-change alert, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert. Driver Confidence II adds automatic high beams, forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, a following distance indicator, lane-departure warning, and lane-keep assist.
- Infotainment: The Bolt EV uses a 10.2-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto standard. The system is customizable and includes energy displays, but the layout can feel clunky and laggy.
- Range & charging: It has an EPA range of 259 miles and a 66-kilowatt-hour battery pack. Level 1 charging adds about four miles of range per hour, Level 2 adds about 25 miles per hour, and the Premier’s DC fast charging can add up to 100 miles in 30 minutes.
- Battery health: For a used Bolt EV, you should check battery state-of-health, ask how often it was charged at home versus on DC fast chargers, and confirm how much of the eight-year/100,000-mile battery warranty remains.
Which 2021 Chevrolet Bolt EV trim should I buy?
The 2021 Chevrolet Bolt EV is offered in 2 trim levels: LT and Premier.
Here's the short version:
- LT: This is the value play if you want the Bolt EV’s core strengths without paying for extras. You still get the 10.2-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, remote start, alloy wheels, automatic climate control, dual USB ports, Bluetooth connectivity, satellite radio, and a WiFi hotspot.
- Premier: This is the better choice if you want a more comfortable and better-equipped cabin. It adds leather upholstery, heated front and rear seats, a heated steering wheel, a rear center armrest, and a removable cargo load floor. It also unlocks the available infotainment and driver-confidence packages, including DC fast charging and more advanced safety tech.
The safety-package gap matters here: many of the Bolt EV’s advanced driver-assistance features are not standard, so you should verify exactly which package a used example has.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Chevrolet Bolt EV?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently but should move quickly on the right car.
- Deal availability: 30.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 155 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices are up 12.72% year-over-year.
- Clean inventory: 83.9% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $14,276.39, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2021 Chevrolet Bolt EV's resale value?
The current average of $17,264 sits slightly above last year's $15,316.
That price movement suggests the Bolt EV has held demand well relative to where it was a year ago. If you buy now, you’re entering a market that has already moved upward, which can help support resale later if you keep the car in good condition.
For a future seller, the key is whether the market continues to value the Bolt EV’s range, low running costs, and commuter-friendly packaging. A clean history and strong battery health should matter a lot when it’s time to resell.
Is the 2021 Chevrolet Bolt EV safe?
The Bolt EV earns a five-star crash test rating from NHTSA and a Top Safety Pick rating from IIHS.
It earns a 8/10 safety score from our experts.
Chevy’s Teen Driver feature is standard, and the available driver-assistance packages add useful coverage. Driver Confidence I brings rear parking sensors, lane-change alert, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert. Driver Confidence II adds automatic high beams, forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, a following distance indicator, lane-departure warning, and lane-keep assist.
The main caveat is that advanced safety tech is not standard across the lineup, so you should confirm which package a used example has before you buy.
Should I buy a 2021 Chevrolet Bolt EV or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2021 if:
- 30.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 83.9% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices are up 12.72% year-over-year.
- It delivers strong range and low running costs in a compact, commuter-friendly package.
