Is the 2021 BMW X7 a good car?

Yes — the 2021 BMW X7 earns a 5/5 user rating and a 7.7/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Safety at 9/10.

Owners consistently praise the X7 for its impressive driving experience, luxurious interior, and spaciousness. The user feedback also points to strong power and performance, especially in higher-output versions, which lines up with the X7’s role as a large luxury SUV that still feels engaging from behind the wheel.

The trade-offs are that advanced safety features are not standard, and the X7’s equipment strategy changes for 2021, with more decadent features pushed up to the Alpina XB7. In practical terms, you’re looking at a three-row luxury SUV that suits you best if you want a spacious cabin and strong road manners rather than a purely comfort-first people mover.

Is the 2021 BMW X7 reliable?

Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

The expert review also describes the X7’s advanced driver-assistance technology as accurate, smooth, and trustworthy, which supports the impression that the SUV is built to be dependable in regular use.

BMW also includes free scheduled maintenance for three years or 36,000 miles, which helps reduce early ownership costs and adds a useful ownership perk. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is that a luxury SUV with complex technology and available packages can become expensive if prior maintenance or repairs were neglected.

What should I look for when buying a used 2021 BMW X7?

Accident-free inventory is solid at 81.9% — always verify the vehicle history report.

You should still check the vehicle history report carefully and prioritize a thorough pre-purchase inspection, especially on a luxury SUV with advanced electronics and available driver-assistance packages. Focus on overall condition, feature operation, and evidence of consistent maintenance, since the X7’s appeal depends heavily on how well it has been cared for.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The xDrive40i starts at $74,900, while the M50i starts at $99,800 and the Alpina XB7 starts at $141,300. The xDrive40i is the most accessible choice, while the higher trims add more performance and exclusivity.
• Powertrain: The xDrive40i uses a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six with 335 horsepower and a 48-volt mild-hybrid system that adds an incremental efficiency boost. BMW also notes strong acceleration and a smooth, silky power delivery.
• Safety package: BMW’s Active Driving Assistant Pro adds evasive-steering assist, traffic-jam assist, lane-control assist, and emergency stop assist. The Parking Assistance Package adds semi-automated parallel parking assist, a surround-view camera, and a drive recorder system.
• Infotainment: The X7 uses a 12.3-inch display for both Live Cockpit Professional and iDrive 7.0, and it adds Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, wireless smartphone charging, natural voice recognition, and standard Connected Package Pro.
• Fuel efficiency: The xDrive40i returns 19 mpg city, 24 mpg highway, and 21 mpg combined.

Which 2021 BMW X7 trim should I buy?

The 2021 BMW X7 is offered in 3 trim levels: xDrive40i, M50i, Alpina XB7.

Here's the short version:

• xDrive40i: This is the best-value choice if you want the core X7 experience without stretching into the higher-priced performance trims. It gives you the 335-horsepower turbocharged inline-six, the 48-volt mild-hybrid system, and the X7’s strong mix of luxury, space, and road manners.
• M50i: Choose this if you want more performance and are willing to pay for it. The content identifies it as a higher-output version, and owner feedback specifically calls out the power and performance in models like this one.
• Alpina XB7: This is the top-end choice for buyers who want the most exclusive and performance-tuned version of the X7. The 2021 changes also push many of the SUV’s most decadent features to this trim.

BMW’s safety technologies are standard except for the optional Driving Assistance Professional Package and Parking Assistance Package, so you may want to prioritize those options when shopping.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 BMW X7?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.

• Deal availability: 33.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,151 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 13.22% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 81.9% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $35,776, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2021 BMW X7's resale value?

The current average of $35,776 sits slightly below last year's $41,228.

That decline suggests the X7 has moved into a more buyer-friendly pricing zone, which can help future resale by keeping it competitive against other large luxury SUVs. If you buy well now, you may have a better chance of limiting depreciation compared with a purchase made when prices were higher. Strong demand for a well-regarded luxury SUV can also help support values, especially when the vehicle has a good ownership reputation.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2021 BMW X7 safe?

The 2021 BMW X7 earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

BMW makes its safety technologies standard except for the optional Driving Assistance Professional Package and Parking Assistance Package. The Driving Assistance Professional Package adds Active Driving Assistant Pro, which includes evasive-steering assist, traffic-jam assist, lane-control assist, and emergency stop assist, along with partially automated steering input on limited-access highways at speeds under 40 mph. The Parking Assistance Package adds semi-automated parallel parking assist, a surround-view camera, and a drive recorder system.

The expert review says the system is accurate, smooth, and trustworthy overall, though lane-maintenance behavior can be reactive in some situations and automated lane changes can feel abrupt. That means you get a strong safety foundation, but you should pay attention to whether the specific vehicle you’re considering has the optional driver-assistance packages you want.

Should I buy a 2021 BMW X7 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2021 if:

• 33.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Accident-free inventory is solid at 81.9% — always verify the vehicle history report.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 13.22% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2021 model adds a 48-volt mild-hybrid powertrain to the standard xDrive40i and brings Android Auto into the infotainment mix.

The bottom line: If you want the X7 with updated efficiency and tech, the 2021 is the right path. If you’re shopping mainly on price, you may still want to compare nearby years, but the 2021 offers a strong mix of value, satisfaction, and equipment for a used luxury SUV buyer.
