Why it stands out
The 2021 BMW X5 stands out as a family-friendly SUV that pairs powerful engine choices with a refined interior. It also brings a stylish design and a large cargo area, giving it the kind of everyday usefulness many buyers want in a premium SUV. With multiple powertrain options and impressive technology, it has broad appeal for shoppers who want both performance and practicality in one package.
For 2021, the X5’s second-generation plug-in hybrid variant joins the lineup, adding another choice for buyers interested in electrified driving. Owners also praise the smooth ride, high-quality interior, and advanced technology, which reinforce the X5’s upscale feel. One drawback is that advanced safety features are not standard, and some owners feel the pricing can climb quickly when additional features are added.

Very impressed with the smooth ride and many safety features. Air ride suspension and ventilated front seats will make our long car trips less taxing. Ordered a 2022 X5 45e plug in hybrid with electric range of 40 miles. Great for around town errands. And the $7,500 federal tax credit was icing on the cake. The X5 could be compared to the higher end Lexus SUV but seems BMW is one of the few car companies that have plug in hybrids available in a reasonable time frame - 30 days. Toyota dealer said the wait for a Rav 4 Prime plug in hybrid is 2 to 4 years. Same for Ford Escape plug in hybrid - dealer not able to say when it might be available.

Is the 2021 BMW X5 a good car?
Yes — the 2021 BMW X5 earns a 4.67/5 user rating and an 8.00/10 expert rating. The model scores 9/10 across Look and feel and Technology.
Owners consistently praise the smooth ride, high-quality interior, and advanced technology. They also note that it holds its value well, and the X5’s family-friendly layout and everyday usefulness make it appealing if you want a premium SUV that balances practicality with upscale features.
The main trade-offs are that pricing can climb quickly once you start adding options, and advanced safety features are not standard.
With 40.3% of listings marked as good or great deals, the market gives you some room to shop carefully.
Is the 2021 BMW X5 reliable?
Owners rate it 4.67/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback points to a vehicle that feels dependable in daily use, with praise for its smooth ride, high-quality interior, and ability to hold its value well. That combination suggests you’re looking at an SUV that many owners feel comfortable keeping for the long haul.
The expert evaluation also emphasizes the X5’s refined cabin and broad capability, which supports the impression of a well-built premium SUV. BMW’s maintenance coverage can help early ownership costs, but you should still expect higher long-term expenses than you would with a mainstream SUV.
For used buyers, the biggest ownership risk is that repair and option-related costs can rise quickly as the vehicle ages.
What should I look for when buying a used 2021 BMW X5?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 82.2% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still run a history report on any candidate, even if the listing looks clean at first glance. Prioritize a pre-purchase inspection that checks the electronics, driver-assistance systems, and any added equipment, since the X5 can be heavily optioned. Focus on overall condition and maintenance records, especially if you’re comparing vehicles with different powertrains or feature packages.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: Standard xLine models use matte aluminum grilles, satin-aluminum exterior accents, and full adaptive LED headlights, while M Sport models add more aggressive exterior and interior styling, including an M sports steering wheel, M-specific pedals, and model-exclusive trim strips. Base models can feel less distinctive than the sportier versions.
- Powertrain: The lineup includes a 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder with 335 horsepower and 330 pound-feet of torque, a plug-in hybrid with up to 30 miles of all-electric range, and higher-output V8 models for buyers who want more performance. All engines use an eight-speed automatic transmission.
- Safety package: Every X5 includes blind-spot monitoring, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, adaptive cruise control, front and rear parking sensors, rain-sensing windshield wipers, fatigue and focus alert, lane departure warning, automatic high-beam headlights, and a rearview camera. The hands-on Driving Assistance Professional Package adds adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go functionality, but the system’s lane-keeping behavior can be inconsistent.
- Infotainment: The standard setup includes a 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay, wireless Android Auto, a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster, navigation, Bluetooth, five USB ports, HD Radio, satellite radio, voice recognition, automatic climate control, proximity key, and a panoramic moonroof.
- Fuel efficiency: The plug-in hybrid is rated at 50 MPGe when using electricity and gas, while the gasoline-only X5 xDrive gets 23 mpg combined. The X5 xDrive45e can travel up to 30 miles on electric power alone.
Which 2021 BMW X5 trim should I buy?
The 2021 BMW X5 is offered in 4 trim levels: xDrive40i, xDrive45e, M50i, M.
Here's the short version:
- xDrive40i: This is the best-value choice if you want the core X5 experience without stepping into the pricier performance models. You still get the 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder, the eight-speed automatic, and the X5’s standard tech and safety equipment, so it covers the essentials well.
- xDrive45e: Choose this if you want the plug-in hybrid setup and the ability to drive up to 30 miles on electricity alone. It’s the right fit if you value efficiency and short electric-only trips more than sharper driving dynamics.
- M50i: This trim is for you if you want a big jump in power from the twin-turbo V8 and are willing to pay more for it. It suits buyers who care more about performance than fuel economy.
- M: Pick this only if you want the most powerful version and are comfortable with the highest ownership costs. It’s the enthusiast choice in the lineup.
BMW includes a long list of standard safety features on every X5, but the hands-on driver-assistance package is not fully confidence-inspiring in testing, so it’s worth treating that system as a convenience feature rather than a substitute for attentive driving.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 BMW X5?
This is a buyer-friendly moment if you’re shopping carefully and comparing listings.
- Deal availability: 40.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 2,256 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 13.68% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 82.2% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $31,087, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2021 BMW X5's resale value?
The current average of $31,087 sits slightly below last year's $36,015.
That price movement suggests the X5 has already absorbed a meaningful amount of depreciation, which can help future resale stability if you buy at the right price. If the market continues to favor shoppers, a well-kept example should remain easier to move than one with heavy wear or a weak service history.
For a future seller, the key is to buy a clean, well-equipped example and keep it in strong condition. Premium SUVs with broad appeal tend to hold buyer interest better when they’re maintained carefully and priced realistically.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.67/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2021 BMW X5 safe?
The 2021 BMW X5 has been given nearly all Good ratings by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and earns a four-star overall rating from NHTSA.
It earns a 6/10 safety score from our experts.
BMW equips every X5 with blind-spot monitoring, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, adaptive cruise control, front and rear parking sensors, rain-sensing windshield wipers, fatigue and focus alert, lane departure warning, automatic high-beam headlights, and a rearview camera.
The main caveat is that the hands-on Driving Assistance Professional Package did not perform consistently in testing. Lane-keeping behavior could be disrupted by sunlight and rain, and the system did not always react to stopped traffic in time for a comfortable stop.
Should I buy a 2021 BMW X5 or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2021 if:
- 40.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 82.2% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 13.68% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.67/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- For 2021, the X5’s second-generation plug-in hybrid variant joins the lineup, adding another choice for buyers interested in electrified driving.
The bottom line: The 2021 X5 makes sense if you want a well-equipped premium SUV with strong owner satisfaction, broad powertrain choice, and a market that currently favors shoppers. If you’re especially price-sensitive, you may want to compare it against nearby model years and focus on the cleanest, best-priced example rather than chasing the newest trim or option package.
