CarGurus Analysis: 2021 BMW X5
overall

Summary
With 2,236 currently listed for sale and an average price of $32,492.00, 36.1% of 2021 BMW X5s for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2021 BMW X5 4.67 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it an 8 / 10.
83.5% of 2021 BMW X5 models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2021 BMW X5 stands out as an upscale family-friendly SUV that pairs powerful engine options with a refined interior. Its appeal is broad: the X5 offers multiple powertrain choices, a stylish design, and impressive technology, while still delivering the utility buyers expect from a family SUV.
For 2021, the SUV’s second-generation plug-in hybrid variant joins the family, adding another layer of choice to an already versatile lineup. The X5 also shares a similar body design and a large cargo area across the range, which helps it balance everyday practicality with a more premium feel.
There are a few tradeoffs to keep in mind. Advanced safety features are not standard, and some owners feel the pricing can get high, especially when adding extra equipment. Even so, the 2021 BMW X5 remains appealing for shoppers who want a polished, well-equipped SUV with strong performance potential and a high-quality cabin.

Very impressed with the smooth ride and many safety features. Air ride suspension and ventilated front seats will make our long car trips less taxing. Ordered a 2022 X5 45e plug in hybrid with electric range of 40 miles. Great for around town errands. And the $7,500 federal tax credit was icing on the cake. The X5 could be compared to the higher end Lexus SUV but seems BMW is one of the few car companies that have plug in hybrids available in a reasonable time frame - 30 days. Toyota dealer said the wait for a Rav 4 Prime plug in hybrid is 2 to 4 years. Same for Ford Escape plug in hybrid - dealer not able to say when it might be available.

With 2,283 listings available, you have a solid amount of inventory to compare before you buy. If you find a listing below $32,379.40, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2021 BMW X5 a good car?
Yes — the 2021 BMW X5 earns a 4.67/5 user rating and an 8.00/10 expert rating. The model scores 9/10 across Look and feel and Technology.
Owners consistently praise its smooth ride, high-quality interior, and advanced technology. They also point to its safety features and its ability to hold value well. The trade-offs are familiar: pricing can climb quickly, especially once you start adding extra equipment, and the X5’s appeal is strongest if you want a polished family SUV with a premium feel rather than a stripped-down value play.
That lines up well with the X5’s role as an upscale, family-friendly SUV with multiple powertrain choices and a large cargo area. With 29.3% of listings marked as good or great deals, there is still some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2021 BMW X5 reliable?
Owners rate it 4.67/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback points to a vehicle that feels dependable in daily use, with praise for its smooth ride and the kind of quality that helps you feel confident keeping it for the long haul. The expert evaluation also notes that the X5’s cabin stays quiet and that the plug-in hybrid’s transition between electric and gasoline power is seamless, which supports the impression of a well-sorted SUV.
BMW also notes that charging the plug-in hybrid is straightforward, and the model can recover electric range during normal driving. For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is that higher-spec versions and added options can raise repair and running costs over time.
What should I look for when buying a used 2021 BMW X5?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 83.7% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still check the history report carefully, because a clean listing percentage does not replace a proper vehicle-by-vehicle review. Prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you are looking at a higher-mileage example or one with a long option list. Focus on overall condition, signs of wear in the cabin, and whether the equipment you want is actually present on the specific vehicle.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: Standard xLine models use matte aluminum grilles, satin-aluminum exterior accents, and full adaptive LED headlights, while M Sport models add body-color wheel arch trim, bumper trim, rear underbody protection, side skirts, and more aggressive interior styling. The base setup is upscale, but the M Sport look is the more distinctive choice if you want a sportier appearance.
- Powertrain: The lineup includes a 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder with 335 horsepower and 330 pound-feet of torque, a twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8 with 523 horsepower and 553 pound-feet of torque, and a plug-in hybrid with 389 horsepower, 443 pound-feet of torque, and up to 30 miles of all-electric range. All engines use an eight-speed automatic, and the base model is the only rear-wheel-drive version.
- Safety package: Every X5 includes blind-spot monitoring, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, adaptive cruise control, front and rear parking sensors, rain-sensing windshield wipers, fatigue and focus alert, lane departure warning, automatic high-beam headlights, and a rearview camera. The hands-on Driving Assistance Professional Package adds adaptive cruise control with stop and go functionality, but the system’s lane-keeping behavior can be inconsistent.
- Infotainment: You get a 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay, wireless Android Auto, a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster, navigation, Bluetooth, five USB ports, HD Radio, satellite radio, voice recognition, automatic climate control, proximity key, and a panoramic moonroof. Available upgrades include a head-up display, wireless smartphone charger, Wi-Fi hot spot, and premium audio systems.
- Fuel efficiency: The X5 xDrive gets 23 mpg combined, the X5 xDrive45e gets 20 mpg combined on gasoline and 50 MPGe when using electricity and gas, the X5 M50i gets 18 mpg combined, and the X5 M gets 15 mpg combined.
Which 2021 BMW X5 trim should I buy?
The 2021 BMW X5 is offered in 4 trim levels: sDrive40i, xDrive40i, xDrive45e, M50i.
Here's the short version:
- sDrive40i: This is the entry point if you want the X5’s core luxury, technology, and standard safety equipment without moving up the price ladder. It is also the only rear-wheel-drive version, so it makes the most sense if you do not need AWD.
- xDrive40i: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it keeps the six-cylinder powertrain and adds standard AWD. If you want the broadest mix of everyday usability, traction, and equipment, this is the trim to target first.
- xDrive45e: Choose this if you want plug-in hybrid capability and the ability to drive on electricity for short trips. It suits you best if you can charge regularly and want the most efficiency-focused version in the lineup.
- M50i: This is the choice if you want the strongest V8 performance short of the full M model. It makes sense if you care more about power and premium feel than fuel economy.
The safety package is generous across the range, but the hands-on driver-assistance system is not a substitute for attentive driving.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 BMW X5?
This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you are patient.
- Deal availability: 29.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 2,283 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 13.07% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 83.7% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $32,379.40, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2021 BMW X5's resale value?
The current average of $32,364 sits slightly below last year's $37,229.
That kind of price movement suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy at a more favorable point in the cycle. For a future seller, it also means your resale outcome will depend heavily on condition, mileage, and equipment, since the model has already given back a meaningful amount of value. Well-kept examples with desirable features should still be easier to move than neglected ones.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.67/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2021 BMW X5 safe?
The 2021 BMW X5 has been given nearly all Good ratings by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), and it earns a four-star overall safety rating from NHTSA.
It earns a 6/10 safety score from our experts.
BMW equips every X5 with blind-spot monitoring, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, adaptive cruise control, front and rear parking sensors, rain-sensing windshield wipers, fatigue and focus alert, lane departure warning, automatic high-beam headlights, and a rearview camera. The available Driving Assistance Professional Package adds adaptive cruise control with stop and go functionality, but the system’s lane-centering behavior can be inconsistent in real-world use.
That means the X5 gives you a strong standard safety list, but you should not assume the advanced driver-assistance tech will work flawlessly in every condition. If you are shopping used, it is worth testing those systems carefully during your inspection drive.
Should I buy a 2021 BMW X5 or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2021 if:
- 29.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 83.7% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 13.07% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.67/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- For 2021, the plug-in hybrid variant joins the lineup, adding another powertrain choice to an already versatile SUV.
The bottom line: The 2021 X5 makes sense if you want a well-equipped luxury SUV with broad powertrain choice, strong owner satisfaction, and a market that has softened enough to create some buying opportunity. If you are especially price-sensitive, you may want to focus on the best-deal listings and compare them carefully against nearby model years before deciding.
