The BMW X4 is a compact four-door-coupe crossover, competing with the Audi Q5 Sportback and Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class Coupe. There are no major changes for 2021.

The X4 comes with two powertrains. The first, the xDrive30i, is a turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-four-cylinder engine worth 248 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. If you want something a bit spicier, the xDriveM40i gets a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder engine that metes out 382 hp and 365 lb-ft. No matter which one you choose, you’ll get an eight-speed automatic transmission and standard all-wheel drive (AWD). Fuel economy is decent for both powertrains, at 23 mpg city, 29 mpg highway and 25 mpg combined for the xDrive30i, and 21 mpg city, 27 mpg highway, and 23 mpg combined for the M40i, using premium fuel.

The base X4 comes with 19-inch wheels, power-folding and heated side mirrors, privacy glass, leatherette upholstery, oak wood trim, 10-way power front sport seats, a 40/20/40 split-folding rear seat, automatic three-zone climate control, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, a power liftgate, a garage-door opener, a panoramic sunroof, a 12.3-inch LCD instrument cluster, a 10.25-inch infotainment system, LED fog lights, a 205-watt audio system with 12 speakers, and satellite radio.

Options include leather upholstery, keyless access, wireless charging, a WiFi hotspot, a head-up display, gesture recognition, heated front and rear seats, a heated steering wheel, power front lumbar support, ambient lighting, and adaptive full-LED headlights. Standard on the M40i and optional on the xDrive30i is the M Sport package, which gets you a sporty body kit, tuned suspension, and unique interior and exterior trim.

When it comes to safety, the X4 is about average for its segment. Standard features include forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, lane-departure warning, speed limit information, front and rear parking sensors, rain-sensing wipers, and a rear-view camera. You can tack on automatic high beams, a surround-view camera, a parking assistant, and adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go functionality. Neither the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) nor the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has published any crash-test data for the X4.
