How much does the 2021 BMW 8 Series cost?

Prices have softened 8.37% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.

There are 243 listings available, which gives you a modest pool of cars to compare.

Is the 2021 BMW 8 Series a good car?

Generally — the 2021 BMW 8 Series earns a 4.25/5 user rating and a 7.83/10 expert rating, which fits its role as a high-end luxury car with a six-figure image. The model scores 9/10 across Look and feel and Performance.

The 8 Series stands out for its stylish design, powerful engine, and impressive technology, and it is aimed at buyers who want a luxury coupe or convertible with visual drama and serious capability. The trade-offs are clear: the back seat is cramped, visibility is poor, and a manual transmission is not available.

The market still shows healthy interest, with 31.7% of listings marked as good or great deals.

Is the 2021 BMW 8 Series reliable?

Owners rate it 4.25/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.

The 2021 BMW 8 Series is presented as a high-end luxury car that emphasizes prestige, performance, and advanced equipment, and its driving character is described as calm, composed, and effortless when you are not pushing it hard. The performance notes also point to a car that responds eagerly from a stop and feels unflappable in a wide range of conditions.

Its powertrain is described as easy to live with, with a flawless eight-speed automatic transmission and a rear-biased all-wheel-drive system that can operate in rear-wheel-drive mode when extra traction is not needed. That combination suggests a well-sorted setup rather than a finicky one.

BMW also includes standard remote engine starting, which adds a small but useful convenience touch for daily use. For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is that this is still a complex, expensive luxury car, so upkeep and repair costs can be more demanding than on a mainstream model.

What should I look for when buying a used 2021 BMW 8 Series?

Accident-free inventory is solid at 77.8% — always verify the vehicle history report.

You should still run a vehicle history report and prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially on a car with this level of technology and performance hardware. Focus on condition, maintenance records, and whether the car has the equipment you want, since options can materially change the ownership experience.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The available body styles include coupe, convertible, and four-door sedan (Gran Coupe), and the Gran Coupe is described as remarkably roomy inside. Base-trim buyers should pay close attention to the equipment mix, since the car’s appeal depends heavily on luxury content and technology.
• Powertrain: The M850i specification uses a twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V8 with xDrive all-wheel drive, producing 523 horsepower and 553 pound-feet of torque. It is paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission, launch control, and an M Sport differential, and the car is described as powerful yet easy to drive.
• Safety package: Standard equipment includes forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, low-speed automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, and Active Guard. Available upgrades include active blind-spot monitoring, a surround-view camera system, parking sensors, and the Driving Assistance Professional Package with adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping, lane-centering, lane-changing assistance, evasive-steering assistance, and front and rear cross-traffic warning systems.
• Infotainment: The car uses iDrive 7.0 with a 10.25-inch touchscreen, plus touch, voice, gesture, and physical controls. It also includes smartphone connectivity, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, satellite radio, connected services, and a WiFi hotspot.
• Fuel efficiency: The M850i xDrive Gran Coupe averaged 17.8 mpg on the test loop, and the official EPA combined rating is noted as 20 mpg.

Which 2021 BMW 8 Series trim should I buy?

The 2021 BMW 8 Series is offered in 3 trim levels: coupe, convertible, and four-door sedan (Gran Coupe).

Here's the short version:

• coupe: This is the most traditional 8 Series shape if you want the sleekest two-door look and the core luxury-performance experience. It suits you best if style and driving focus matter more than rear-seat practicality.
• convertible: Choose this if open-air driving is a priority and you want the most dramatic version of the car’s design. It is the best fit if you value image and top-down cruising over everyday utility.
• four-door sedan (Gran Coupe): This is the best-value choice if you want the 8 Series experience with more usable rear-seat access and a roomier cabin. It is the most practical pick for buyers who still want the luxury and performance but need a car that can better serve a family of four.

Standard safety equipment includes forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, low-speed automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, and Active Guard, while the Driving Assistance Professional Package adds the most advanced driver-assistance features.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 BMW 8 Series?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find opportunities.

• Deal availability: 31.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 243 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 8.37% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 77.8% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $45,942, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2021 BMW 8 Series's resale value?

The current average of $46,103 sits slightly below last year's $50,315.

That decline suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you as a buyer but may pressure resale returns if you plan to sell soon. If you buy at the right price, you reduce the risk of taking the steepest depreciation hit later.

The 8 Series still has appeal because it combines prestige, performance, and technology in a way that stands out from more common luxury cars. That kind of positioning can help support demand among shoppers who want something distinctive.

Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.25/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2021 BMW 8 Series safe?

The 2021 BMW 8 Series has not been crash tested by IIHS or NHTSA.

It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

Standard safety features include forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, low-speed automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, and Active Guard, which adds driver monitoring, collision-preparation functions, automatic seatbelt tightening, automatic window closure, and post-collision braking. Available upgrades add active blind-spot monitoring, a surround-view camera system, parking sensors, semi-autonomous parking assistance, and the Driving Assistance Professional Package with adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping, lane-centering, lane-changing assistance, evasive-steering assistance, and front and rear cross-traffic warning systems.

One caveat is that the speed limit-assisted adaptive cruise control can be distracting to override, and the Steering Assistant is not a hands-free system. The system is strong overall, but you should still treat it as an advanced driver-assistance setup rather than full automation.

Should I buy a 2021 BMW 8 Series or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2021 if:

• 31.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Accident-free inventory is solid at 77.8% — always verify the vehicle history report.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 8.37% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.25/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
• The 2021 brings stylish design, a powerful engine, and impressive technology in a high-end luxury package.

Consider the 2020 if:

• At $40,158, the 2020 costs less than the current year's $46,103 average.
• It is a modern take on a flagship luxury car with a strong focus on driving yourself.

The bottom line: If you want the newer model-year pricing context and the strongest mix of style, performance, and technology, the 2021 is the better target. If your priority is saving money up front, the 2020 is the smarter value play, especially if you can find one in good condition with the right equipment.
