When numbers matter, the 2021 BMW 8 Series tells the world you can afford a six-figure ride.
Coupes and convertibles are fading from the market, and fast. Between Americans’ insatiable lust for SUVs and (in the case of convertibles) legitimate concerns about prolonged exposure to sunlight, there simply isn’t much in the way of demand for these impractical and more expensive types of cars.
Available in two-door coupe, two-door convertible, and four-door sedan (Gran Coupe) body styles, the 2021 BMW 8 Series is a great-looking car that delivers the style, sumptuousness, and sophistication you expect from a luxury model that commands a minimum of $85,000 to park in your multi-car garage.
Our test vehicle for this review arrived with the Gran Coupe body style and M850i xDrive specification. To its lofty base price of $108,900, BMW added the Driving Assistance Package, the Driving Assistance Professional Package, the Comfort Seating Package, a Bowers & Wilkins high-end audio system, an M Carbon Exterior Package, piano black interior trim, and glass controls. The test car tallied up to $122,930 MSRP, including the $995 destination charge.
Dressed in Carbon Black paint with Fiona Red leather upholstery, our M850i Gran Coupe was sensationally appealing. Plus, despite its rakish roofline, the Gran Coupe is remarkably roomy inside, serving a family of four without a problem. Quality is pervasive, and the tones, textures, materials, and interior scent all convey a higher degree of luxury than did the previous BMW 6 Series.
From our perspective, the look and feel of the BMW 8 Series is not why you rarely see them on the road.
From a performance perspective, the BMW 8 Series is also worthy, especially in M850i specification. Equipped with a twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V8 engine and BMW’s xDrive all-wheel-drive (AWD) system, the M850i produces 523 horsepower and 553 pound-feet of torque, which accelerates the car from zero to 60 mph in a claimed 3.7 seconds, with the help of a standard launch-control system and M Sport differential.
Though the torque doesn’t peak until 1,800 rpm (and remains available until revs climb past 4,600 rpm), the car responds eagerly from a stop when you want it to. Under hard acceleration, the twin-turbo V8's thrust is jaw-droppingly good. Yet, despite the available firepower under the hood, when you’re in no hurry to get to where you’re going, the M850i drives easily and effortlessly.
A flawless eight-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters manages the power. Drivers can choose between Eco Pro, Comfort, Sport, and Sport+ driving modes, or configure an Individual setting to specific preferences. The rear-biased xDrive AWD operates in rear-wheel drive (RWD) mode in all situations that do not require added traction at the front axle.
The M850i rides on 20-inch aluminum wheels featuring staggered-width run-flat performance tires, and the standard Adaptive M suspension helps to take the sting out of bumps, cracks, and holes in the pavement. Depending on the chosen driving mode, an active flap M Sport exhaust system adds an appropriate soundtrack, while standard M Sport brakes resist heat and bring the car to a swift stop.
Credit the M850i’s integral active steering and rear-axle steering for its telepathic response to input and smooth driving demeanor. Run it hard on a back road you know well, and it feels nothing but calm, cool, collected, and composed. Power is immense, grip is extraordinary, steering response is instantaneous, and it's incredibly easy to bleed pressure on and off of the brakes as you thread your way down a mountain road.
On freeways and highways, the M850i feels purpose-built for sustained, secure, high-speed transit. It is too easy to go too fast in this car, making its programmable speed-warning function a license saver. Plus, the M850i’s cabin is quiet and hushed no matter the velocity, as a high-end luxury car should be.
Around town, the sport-tuned suspension’s firmness is plainly evident, but not bothersome. The brake pedal can feel a bit stiff at times, and it’s worth noting that you must take special care not to scrape the M850i’s low nose on parking blocks or the pavement.
Upon completion of our standard evaluation loop, we found it hard to criticize anything related to the M850i’s driving dynamics. This car is utterly unflappable no matter the situation. However, it did fall short of the official EPA fuel-economy rating of 20 mpg in combined driving. On our loop, the M850i xDrive Gran Coupe averaged 17.8 mpg.
We expected to enjoy driving the BMW M850i Gran Coupe, but we did not expect it to serve well as a family car. Though entry and exit are challenging due to the car’s low roofline, and the cabin proves a snug fit once you're settled in, the 8 Series Gran Coupe is nevertheless comfortable, thanks in part to 16-way power-adjustable front seats with heating, ventilation, and supple leather.
Adults fit just fine in the back seat, where generous legroom and a tall seating position are wholly unexpected. Furthermore, the test car had rear dual-zone climate control, two rear USB-C charging ports, heated seat cushions, an overhead glass roof panel, and one-touch power sunshade operation for the rear side and back windows. Frankly, we were stunned by how accommodating the rear seats were, but headroom might be in short supply depending on how tall your passengers are.
High-end, authentic interior materials are the rule rather than the exception, and quality oozes throughout the cabin. Standard Live Cockpit Professional digital instrumentation eliminates the classic round BMW gauges but is otherwise agreeable. It would be nice if the driver could change the 12.3-inch display to a more traditional appearance, though.
Controls reflect the quirks common to BMWs, though they’re not as bothersome as in the past. For example, in addition to iDrive infotainment controls on the center console, you can use natural voice recognition, touchscreen control, and even gesture control to operate the technology. If you’re new to BMW, everything becomes second nature after a steep learning curve.
Storage is decent, if not generous. The bin under the center armrest is larger than expected, and BMW supplies a handful of bins and trays as well as a glove compartment. According to BMW, the trunk holds 15.5 cubic feet of cargo, though it appears smaller than that. Enclosed trunk hinges and generous floor space help you to make the most of it.
Equipped with iDrive 7.0, the 2021 BMW 8 Series has an infotainment system operable by touch, voice, gestures, or physical controls. The 10.25-inch touchscreen display is located within easy reach, and with memorization, the iDrive control knob and primary menu buttons are easy to use without looking down at the center console.
BMW’s gesture control functions are sketchy, more a gimmick than anything else. And the natural-voice-recognition digital assistant sometimes awakens when you don’t expect it. Generally speaking, though, this version of iDrive is the best one yet. But it isn’t perfect.
We used the M850i Gran Coupe to drive into West Los Angeles for a family dinner at a favorite restaurant located in the Century City mall. Unfortunately, the test car’s database did not include this destination. It had no trouble finding locations in Glendale and Pasadena, but the Century City restaurant was MIA.
As you would expect, iDrive 7.0 includes smartphone connectivity, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, satellite radio, connected services (including a WiFi hotspot), and more. The test car had the optional Bowers & Wilkins high-end audio system with 16 speakers and 1,400 watts of power. Words cannot describe how good it was.
Remote engine starting is also standard on the 8 Series. A head-up display is available and is nearly invisible when the driver wears polarized sunglasses, a common problem in BMWs.
Standard safety features for the BMW 8 Series include forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, low-speed automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, and Active Guard. This equips the car with driver monitoring and collision-preparation functions, including automatic seatbelt tightening and automatic window closure, and post-collision braking to bring the car to a stop as soon as possible following a crash.
Upgrades include active blind-spot monitoring, semi-autonomous parking assistance for parallel spaces, a surround-view camera system, and parking sensors. The Driving Assistance Professional Package adds adaptive cruise control paired with lane-keeping, lane-centering, and lane-changing assistance. Evasive-steering assistance and front and rear cross-traffic warning systems are also a part of this package.
BMW needs to make it easier for a driver to override the speed limit-assisted version of the adaptive cruise control. In Los Angeles, where traffic is unpredictable, the system can become a hindrance. Switching the speed limit-assisted cruise control off is not intuitive, and proves distracting. Once you succeed at this, the 8 Series nearly drives itself. A light hand on the steering wheel is all that is necessary, but the car’s Steering Assistant technology is not a hands-free system.
Case in point, while driving on the southbound 405 freeway near the Getty Center, the tech allowed our M850i Gran Coupe to drift wide in a curve, crossing the double set of double yellow lines separating the carpool lane from other lanes of traffic. Similarly, on the Pacific Coast Highway, the 8 Series had trouble knowing what to do when one travel lane became two, and when two travel lanes became one.
These were isolated incidents, though, and overall the car’s driving-assistance systems proved exceptionally good. In our opinion, the Driving Assistance Professional Package sits right on the cusp of going hands-free, similar to GM’s laudable Super Cruise technology.
Due to its low production volume and high price tag, neither the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) nor the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has performed crash tests on the BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe.
In creating the latest 8 Series, which debuted for the 2019 model year, BMW may have misread the tea leaves. It wanted to move the car higher in terms of quality, performance, content, and prestige, and all of the demographic trends suggested this would be a wise move.
Furthermore, few competitors exist in the 8 Series’s price bracket, so the new BMW could theoretically dominate the segment of the market that straddles $100,000. Also, with the next-generation 4 Series arriving, BMW would eliminate any price overlap by switching to a new, more expensive 8 Series lineup.
However, data-driven decisions that make logical sense don’t always pan out, and BMW simply isn’t selling as many examples of the 8 Series as it would like to. Despite U.S. tax laws favoring the wealthy, record stock-market performance, and skyrocketing real estate values, the car is underperforming in terms of its contribution to the company’s bottom line.
You might presume the pandemic is to blame, but in 2020, BMW nearly doubled 8 Series sales after the four-door Gran Coupe version arrived in showrooms. But now that the country’s economic engine is roaring again, 8 Series sales through the middle of 2021 are stalled rather than growing.
So, what’s the problem?
Aside from the obvious consumer preference for SUVs across all price segments, BMW’s existing 6 Series customers are likely suffering “sticker shock” when they consider the 8 Series as a replacement.
Furthermore, consumers and critics continue to compare the 8 Series with the more affordable Audi A7, Mercedes-Benz CLS, and Mercedes-Benz E-Class coupe and convertible that served as alternatives to the previous 6 Series. Measured against these vehicles, the BMW 8 Series comes up short in terms of value, or style, or utility, or outright performance, depending on the competitor.
In its new pricing segment, the 8 Series goes to battle against the Lexus LC, Mercedes-Benz SL, Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupe, and Porsche Panamera. Aside from the Porsche, none of these models are anywhere close to selling in significant numbers—even in America’s wealthier enclaves. With this fact in mind, perhaps BMW should be happy with moving around 7,000 examples of the 8 Series annually.
BMW also needs to make it clear to its customers that the top-end Lexus and Mercedes models are the 8’s true competitors. Viewed through that lens, the price starts to make sense.
Certainly, the product itself is doing everything it can to appeal to the few people who want one and can afford one. Based on our evaluation of the M850i Gran Coupe, this is a fantastic automobile that is easy to love, but if you don’t give it a try, you won’t find out.
