Is the 2021 BMW 8 Series a good car?

Generally — the 2021 BMW 8 Series earns a 4.3/5 user rating and a 7.8/10 expert rating. The model scores 9/10 across Look and feel and Performance.

You get a high-end luxury car with a six-figure image, stylish design, and impressive technology, so it fits you best if you want a statement-making coupe or convertible with serious capability. The market looks reasonably supportive, with 36.5% of listings marked as good or great deals.

Is the 2021 BMW 8 Series reliable?

Owners rate it 4.3/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.

The 2021 BMW 8 Series is presented as a high-end luxury car that aims to combine prestige, performance, and technology, and the expert review describes it as easy to love. Its performance character is especially strong, with the car described as calm, composed, and effortless in everyday driving and stable at highway speeds.

The standard equipment also includes driver-monitoring and collision-preparation functions, which adds confidence for daily use. If you buy used, your main long-term risk is paying luxury-car money for a car whose upkeep and ownership experience can be more demanding than its size suggests.

What should I look for when buying a used 2021 BMW 8 Series?

Accident-free inventory is solid at 78.7% — always verify the vehicle history report.

You should still check the history report carefully, because a clean listing percentage does not replace a proper records review. Prioritize a pre-purchase inspection that focuses on body condition, electronics, and any signs of curb damage or parking scrapes. Pay close attention to visibility-related wear and the condition of the cabin, since this model is positioned as a luxury car where presentation matters.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The Gran Coupe body style is described as remarkably roomy inside, while the coupe and convertible are more style-first choices; the base setup still emphasizes luxury and sophistication, but the test vehicle’s added packages show how much equipment can change the experience.
• Powertrain: The M850i xDrive uses a twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V8 with 523 horsepower and 553 pound-feet of torque, paired with an eight-speed automatic and xDrive all-wheel drive.
• Safety package: Standard equipment includes forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, low-speed automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, and Active Guard. The Driving Assistance Professional Package adds adaptive cruise control with lane-keeping, lane-centering, lane-changing assistance, evasive-steering assistance, and front and rear cross-traffic warning systems.
• Infotainment: iDrive 7.0 uses a 10.25-inch touchscreen and supports touch, voice, gestures, and physical controls. It includes smartphone connectivity, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, satellite radio, connected services, and a WiFi hotspot.
• Fuel efficiency: The test vehicle averaged 17.8 mpg on the evaluation loop, and the official combined rating is referenced as 20 mpg.

Which 2021 BMW 8 Series trim should I buy?

The 2021 BMW 8 Series is offered in 1 trim level: M850i xDrive.

Here's the short version:

The M850i xDrive is the clear choice if you want the full 8 Series experience, because it brings the twin-turbo V8, xDrive all-wheel drive, and the strongest performance character described in the review. It also pairs that power with a polished cabin, strong technology, and a composed ride, so it suits you best if you want the most complete version of the car rather than a stripped-down luxury coupe or convertible.

The safety package note to keep in mind is that the Driving Assistance Professional Package adds the most advanced driver-assistance features, including lane-centering and lane-changing assistance.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 BMW 8 Series?

This looks like a moderate market for selective buyers, with enough inventory and deal activity to make comparison shopping worthwhile.

• Deal availability: 36.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 244 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 8.99% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 78.7% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $45,757, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2021 BMW 8 Series's resale value?

The current average of $45,757 sits slightly below last year's $50,277.

That decline suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you as a buyer but may pressure future resale returns if you overpay today. If you plan to sell later, buying near the low end of the current range gives you a better chance of limiting depreciation pain. The model’s luxury positioning and strong desirability can still support demand, but the price trend shows that value retention is not especially strong right now.

Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.3/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2021 BMW 8 Series safe?

The 2021 BMW 8 Series includes standard forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, low-speed automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, and Active Guard.

It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

The standard safety setup also includes driver monitoring, collision-preparation functions, automatic seatbelt tightening, automatic window closure, and post-collision braking. If you want more capability, the available Driving Assistance Professional Package adds adaptive cruise control with lane-keeping, lane-centering, lane-changing assistance, evasive-steering assistance, and front and rear cross-traffic warning systems. The review also notes that the speed limit-assisted cruise control can be distracting to override, and the steering-assist tech is not hands-free.

Should I buy a 2021 BMW 8 Series or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2021 if:

• 36.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Accident-free inventory is solid at 78.7% — always verify the vehicle history report.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 8.99% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.3/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
• The 2021 stands out for its stylish design, powerful engine, and impressive technology.

Consider the 2020 if:

• At $39,929, the 2020 costs less than the current year's $45,757 average.
• It is a modern take on a flagship luxury car with a focus on driving yourself.

The bottom line: If you want the stronger current-market mix of inventory, deal share, and updated appeal, the 2021 is the better primary target. If your priority is spending less up front, the 2020 is the more budget-friendly path.
