Is the 2021 BMW 8 Series a good car?

Generally — the 2021 BMW 8 Series earns a 4.3/5 user rating and a 7.8/10 expert rating. The model scores 9/10 across Look and feel and Performance.

That makes it a strong fit if you want a luxury coupe or convertible that emphasizes drama and capability over everyday practicality. With 34.2% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have some room to shop selectively.

Is the 2021 BMW 8 Series reliable?

Owners rate it 4.3/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.

The 2021 BMW 8 Series is presented as a high-end luxury car with strong performance and a polished cabin, which supports confidence in day-to-day use. Its expert evaluation also describes the car as easy to love, with a quiet cabin and composed driving manners that suggest it is built for sustained, comfortable ownership.

The performance write-up emphasizes that the car drives easily and effortlessly when you are not pushing it, while still delivering immense power when you do. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is that a complex, high-priced luxury car can be costly to keep in top shape, so condition and maintenance history matter.

What should I look for when buying a used 2021 BMW 8 Series?

Accident-free inventory is solid at 78.2% — always verify the vehicle history report.

Start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a thorough pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has been optioned heavily or driven hard. Pay close attention to cabin condition, visibility-related wear, and any signs that the car has been used as a low-mileage status purchase rather than a carefully maintained grand tourer.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The car is offered in two-door coupe, two-door convertible, and four-door sedan (Gran Coupe) body styles, and the Gran Coupe is described as remarkably roomy inside. The base-price positioning and the available luxury equipment make the higher-spec versions especially appealing, while the back seat remains cramped in the overall lineup.
• Powertrain: The M850i specification uses a twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V8 with xDrive all-wheel drive, producing 523 horsepower and 553 pound-feet of torque. It is paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission, and the car’s driving modes and rear-biased AWD setup help it feel both quick and composed.
• Safety package: Standard equipment includes forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, low-speed automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, and Active Guard. Available upgrades add active blind-spot monitoring, semi-autonomous parking assistance, a surround-view camera system, parking sensors, and the Driving Assistance Professional Package with adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping, lane-centering, lane-changing assistance, evasive-steering assistance, and front and rear cross-traffic warning systems.
• Infotainment: The cabin uses iDrive 7.0 with a 10.25-inch touchscreen, plus touch, voice, gesture, and physical controls. Smartphone connectivity, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, satellite radio, connected services, and a WiFi hotspot are included, and the available Bowers & Wilkins audio system brings 16 speakers and 1,400 watts of power.
• Fuel efficiency: The M850i xDrive Gran Coupe averaged 17.8 mpg on the evaluation loop, and the official EPA combined rating is referenced as 20 mpg.

Which 2021 BMW 8 Series trim should I buy?

The 2021 BMW 8 Series is offered in 3 trim levels: 840i, M850i xDrive, and M850i xDrive Gran Coupe.

Here's the short version:

• 840i: This is the entry point if you want the 8 Series experience at the lowest starting point, and it keeps the model’s style-and-prestige mission intact. It is the trim to consider if you care most about getting into the lineup without chasing the highest-performance hardware.
• M850i xDrive: This is the best-value choice if you want the strongest blend of performance, luxury, and equipment. The V8 power, xDrive traction, and standard performance hardware make it the most compelling all-around pick for buyers who want the full character of the car.
• M850i xDrive Gran Coupe: Choose this if you want the same high-performance personality with the added practicality of four doors and more usable rear seating. It is the best fit if you want the 8 Series to work as a more family-friendly grand tourer.

The Driving Assistance Professional Package adds adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping, lane-centering, lane-changing assistance, evasive-steering assistance, and front and rear cross-traffic warning systems.

• Deal availability: 34.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 243 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 8.92% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 78.2% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $45,931, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2021 BMW 8 Series's resale value?

The current average of $45,944 sits slightly below last year's $50,443.

That price movement suggests the market has cooled, which can help you buy more favorably now but may also limit near-term upside if you plan to resell soon. For a future seller, the key is to buy well and keep the car in excellent condition so you are not fighting depreciation from a higher entry point.

The 8 Series still has appeal because it is a prestige-oriented luxury car with strong performance and standout technology. Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.3/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Should I buy a 2021 BMW 8 Series or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2021 if:

• 34.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Accident-free inventory is solid at 78.2% — always verify the vehicle history report.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 8.92% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.3/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
• It combines stylish design, a powerful engine, and impressive technology in a high-end luxury package.

Consider the 2020 if:

• At $40,149, the 2020 costs less than the current year's $45,944 average.
• It is described as a modern take on a flagship luxury car with a grand touring focus and long-distance comfort.

The bottom line: If you want the stronger current-market mix of price, inventory, and equipment, the 2021 is the better starting point. If your priority is spending less upfront, the 2020 is the more budget-friendly path and still delivers the core grand touring appeal.
