CarGurus Analysis: 2021 BMW 2 Series
overall

Summary
With 589 currently listed for sale and an average price of $22,034.00, 30.7% of 2021 BMW 2 Series for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2021 BMW 2 Series 5 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 6.33 / 10.
74.5% of 2021 BMW 2 Series models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2021 BMW 2 Series is distinctive because it is aimed at a very specific kind of buyer. BMW’s lineup includes a coupe and convertible for driving enthusiasts, along with the 2021 BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe for people who simply want an affordable BMW. That makes it unusual even before you get to the car itself, since the name adds to the confusion around a model that is already hard to understand.
What stands out most is the mix of strengths and compromises. The 2021 BMW 2 Series offers multiple body styles, great handling, and impressive technology, which gives it broad appeal on paper. At the same time, it is described as hard to recommend, with uncomfortable seats, a cramped back seat, and poor value for money. That combination makes it a car with real driving appeal, but one that asks buyers to accept some clear drawbacks.

Reviewed a 2021 BMW M240i xDrive Coupe AWD on May 28, 2025
Has almost every feature I need and want, the price I paid was a no brainer but in all honesty I was prepared to pay more. I wish it had blind spot notice and an Ariel camera view but it’s not deal breakers for me at all. I love the vehicle. I was set on an M240i but was open to years from 2018-2021 since that was my favorite body style. Ended up being able to get the newest and last year of the body style with great miles, and I’d have it no other way. Thank you Chantilly Auto!

How much does the 2021 BMW 2 Series cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $21,975 |
| Year-Round Low | $21,660.02 |
| Year-Round High | $24,163.90 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $23,950 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −8.25% |
Prices have softened 8.25% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 605 listings available, which suggests you should have some room to compare prices and equipment. If you find a listing below $21,660.02, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2021 BMW 2 Series a good car?
Yes — the 5/5 user rating points to strong owner satisfaction, and the expert rating is 6.33/10. The model scores 8/10 across Performance, Technology, and Safety.
The 2021 BMW 2 Series is aimed at a very specific buyer: you get multiple body styles, great handling, and impressive technology, but you also have to accept a car that can be hard to recommend overall. That makes it a better fit if you want an affordable BMW with real driving appeal than if you prioritize everyday comfort and value.
The main trade-offs are uncomfortable seats and a cramped back seat, along with poor value for money. The good news is that the car’s strengths line up well with shoppers who care more about driving enjoyment and premium features than rear-seat space. The market shows 28.3% of listings as good or great deals, which gives you some leverage if you shop carefully.
Is the 2021 BMW 2 Series reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The 2021 BMW 2 Series is presented as a small luxury car with strong technology and solid driving appeal, but it also asks you to accept some compromises. Its performance side is described as lively and enjoyable, and the expert review notes that the car feels more sophisticated than a typical compact rival.
BMW also includes free scheduled maintenance for three years or 36,000 miles, which helps reduce early ownership costs. For used buyers, the bigger long-term risk is not outright mechanical drama so much as living with a car whose comfort and value trade-offs may become more noticeable over time.
What should I look for when buying a used 2021 BMW 2 Series?
At 73.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has been modified or optioned heavily. Pay close attention to seat comfort, rear-seat space, and whether the equipment level matches what you expect for the price. If you’re comparing multiple listings, focus on condition and feature content rather than badge appeal alone.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The car is offered in 228i and M235i model series, and the xDrive all-wheel-drive system is optional on the 228i and standard on the M235i. The 228i can be a smart value if you want the entry point, while the M235i brings more standard equipment and a more performance-oriented setup.
- Powertrain: The 228i uses a 228-hp turbocharged four-cylinder with an eight-speed sport automatic transmission, and xDrive is available for added traction. BMW quotes a zero-to-60 mph time of six seconds flat for the 228i xDrive Gran Coupe.
- Safety package: The available Driving Assistance Package adds adaptive cruise control and a parking-assistant feature that steers the car into a space while you operate the pedals and transmission. The Active Driving Assistant suite includes forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assistance, active blind-spot warning with intervention, and a speed limit information system.
- Infotainment: The system uses an 8.8-inch touchscreen with iDrive 7.0, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, satellite radio, navigation, connected services, and over-the-air software updates. Live Cockpit Pro adds a 10.25-inch digital display, while the standard setup uses a 5.1-inch display between analog gauges.
- Fuel efficiency: On the test loop, the car averaged 27.9 mpg, compared with an EPA estimate of 27 mpg in combined driving.
Which 2021 BMW 2 Series trim should I buy?
The 2021 BMW 2 Series is offered in 2 trim levels: 228i and M235i.
Here's the short version:
- 228i: This is the better-value starting point if you want the affordable BMW experience, strong tech, and the core driving character without paying for the top model. It can also be paired with xDrive if you want extra traction.
- M235i: Choose this if you want the more performance-focused setup and standard xDrive, along with the more aggressive overall character implied by the higher series.
The safety package is worth considering if you want adaptive cruise control and parking assistance, since those features are not part of the standard setup.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 BMW 2 Series?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you can shop with some leverage if you’re patient.
- Deal availability: 28.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 605 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 8.25% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 73.6% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $21,660.02, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2021 BMW 2 Series's resale value?
The current average of $21,975 sits slightly below last year's $23,950.
That price decline suggests the model has already absorbed some of its depreciation, which can help if you buy at the right number. For a future seller, that means your best outcome will depend heavily on condition, mileage, and equipment rather than expecting the market to reward the badge alone. Listings that are accident-free and well maintained should be easier to move later than cars with a rough history or sparse equipment.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2021 BMW 2 Series safe?
The car misses earning a Top Safety Pick due to headlights that rate either Poor or Marginal.
It earns a 8/10 safety score from our experts.
The available driver-assistance setup is the Active Driving Assistant suite, which includes forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assistance, active blind-spot warning with intervention, and a speed limit information system. A separate Driving Assistance Package adds adaptive cruise control and a parking-assistant feature.
The main caveat is that the IIHS headlight performance keeps it from a stronger award result, so you should pay close attention to trim and equipment when comparing used examples.
Should I buy a 2021 BMW 2 Series or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2021 if:
- 28.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 73.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 8.25% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It blends multiple body styles, great handling, and impressive technology, but asks you to accept some clear compromises.
Consider the 2020 if:
- At $22,388, the 2020 costs more than the current year's $21,975 average.
- It offers easy-to-use tech and standard advanced safety in a compact luxury package.
Consider the 2022 if:
- At $26,281, the 2022 costs more than the current year's $21,975 average.
- It brings a refreshed look, larger proportions, and more performance.
The bottom line: If you want the best mix of price and current-market availability, the 2021 is the sensible starting point. If you’re shopping strictly on budget, the 2020 may still make sense, but the 2021’s lower average price and stronger deal availability make it the better first stop for most used-car buyers.
