CarGurus Analysis: 2020 Volkswagen Tiguan
overall

Summary
With 2,381 currently listed for sale and an average price of $16,105.00, 33.5% of 2020 Volkswagen Tiguans for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2020 Volkswagen Tiguan 4.89 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.67 / 10.
72.5% of 2020 Tiguan models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2020 Volkswagen Tiguan stands out in the compact crossover class because it offers three rows of seating, making it a rare choice for buyers who want this size of SUV but need extra passenger capacity. Volkswagen also made it much larger than average for its competitive set to fit those surprisingly spacious seats, and that added room is one of its defining strengths. It is also described as the German brand’s best-selling vehicle in the U.S., which underscores how broadly it appeals.
Beyond its packaging, the Tiguan’s appeal comes from its spacious cabin and easy-to-use technology. Those traits make it a practical option for shoppers who value comfort and straightforward operation over flash. The tradeoff is that handling is a weak point, so it is not the most engaging choice to drive. Some owners also wish it had a power liftgate, suggesting that convenience features are not as complete as the Tiguan’s space and value story might suggest.

This car is great. I think it was a good value because I also looked at a RAV4 and the RAV4 was more expensive, even though it had the exact same features and the Tiguan even was a bit roomier. The only thing the car is missing is a power lift gate.

I do think this car is a great value. I would compare it to the Audi Q5. I traded an Audi Q3 for it. There is way more space and features. I absolutely love it!

Owners rate it 4.89/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
Owner feedback also points to a vehicle that feels reliable, dependable, and trouble-free in everyday use, with praise centered on its quality and the confidence it inspires over time. Expert testing reinforces that impression by describing the Tiguan as a quiet highway cruiser with a refined turbo-four and a well-insulated cabin, which supports the sense that it’s built for steady, predictable use.
Volkswagen also includes five years of complimentary Car-Net features, which can make ownership easier with remote functions and vehicle-status checks. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is making sure the vehicle has been maintained properly, since a neglected example can erase the benefits of its strong ownership reputation.
What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Volkswagen Tiguan?
At 72.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle-history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re considering a higher-mileage example or one with incomplete service records. Focus on body condition, signs of prior repair, and whether the cabin and electronics work as intended, since this model leans heavily on its tech and convenience features.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base S trim is the most stripped-down version, while the SE adds leatherette upholstery, heated front seats, automatic climate control, and the more desirable 8-inch touchscreen. Higher trims add more luxury and convenience, but the entry model is where you’ll notice the biggest feature gaps.
- Powertrain: Every Tiguan uses a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder with an eight-speed automatic transmission, and you can choose front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. It delivers snappy throttle response and refined engine sound, but it is only moderately quick for highway passing.
- Safety package: Volkswagen’s standard suite includes forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking, blind spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert. Adaptive cruise control with lane-keeping assistance and LED headlights with automatic high beams are reserved for the top SEL trim.
- Infotainment: Base S models use a 6.5-inch touchscreen, while SE and higher trims get an 8-inch capacitive display. Wireless charging appears on trims above S, and Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth, and a WiFi hotspot are standard.
- Fuel efficiency: A front-drive Tiguan earns 25 mpg combined, while the AWD version is rated at 23 mpg combined. Highway numbers do not crack 30 mpg for either version.
Which 2020 Volkswagen Tiguan trim should I buy?
The 2020 Volkswagen Tiguan is offered in 5 trim levels: S, SE, SE R-Line Black, SEL, SEL Premium R-Line.
Here's the short version:
- S: This is the least expensive way into the Tiguan, but you give up the 8-inch touchscreen and several comfort upgrades that make the SUV feel more complete. It makes sense only if you’re chasing the lowest entry price.
- SE: This is the value leader because it adds leatherette upholstery, heated front seats, automatic climate control, and the better 8-inch infotainment screen for a relatively modest jump in price. If you want the best balance of equipment and cost, this is the trim to target.
- SE R-Line Black: This trim mostly adds cosmetic upgrades such as alloy wheels and R-Line badging, so it’s best if you care more about appearance than value.
- SEL: This is the trim to choose if you want the more advanced safety and luxury equipment, including adaptive cruise control with lane-keeping assist. It costs more, but it brings the Tiguan closer to a fully loaded family SUV.
- SEL Premium R-Line: This is the top-end choice with all-wheel drive and the most upscale presentation, but it sits at the expensive end of the range and is best for buyers who want the most features and don’t mind paying for them.
The safety package is standard across the lineup, but the most advanced driver-assistance features are reserved for the SEL trim and above.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Volkswagen Tiguan?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.
- Deal availability: 32.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 2,452 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 11.35% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 72.2% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $15,804.76, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2020 Volkswagen Tiguan's resale value?
The current average of $16,067 sits slightly below last year's $18,124.
That decline suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can make the Tiguan more attractive to used buyers today but less favorable for sellers trying to maximize return. If you own one, pricing it competitively will matter more than ever, especially because shoppers have plenty of listings to compare.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.89/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2020 Volkswagen Tiguan safe?
It earns a Top Safety Pick rating from IIHS, but only on top-of-the-line SEL Premium models with LED headlights. Most Tiguans are equipped with halogen headlights, which IIHS rates poor.
It earns a 6/10 safety score from our experts.
Volkswagen’s standard safety suite includes forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking, blind spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert. Adaptive cruise control with lane-keeping assistance and LED headlights with automatic high beams are reserved for the top SEL trim, so you should pay close attention to trim level if safety tech matters to you.
The main caveat is that the strongest IIHS result depends on the right headlight setup, so a lower trim may not deliver the same safety performance as the headline rating suggests.
Should I buy a 2020 Volkswagen Tiguan or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2020 if:
- 32.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 72.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 11.35% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.89/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It offers three-row seating in a compact crossover, which is a rare and practical advantage.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $17,504, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $16,067 average.
- It brings an updated infotainment system and broader family-friendly practicality.
The bottom line: If you want the better value today, the 2020 is the smarter buy because prices have eased and the model still delivers standout space and usability. If you’re willing to spend more for a newer version with updated tech, the 2021 is the cleaner alternative for buyers who prioritize the latest features over upfront savings.
