CarGurus Analysis: 2020 Volkswagen Passat
overall

Summary
With 454 currently listed for sale and an average price of $15,053.00, 33.0% of 2020 Volkswagen Passats for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2020 Volkswagen Passat 4.6 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it an 8 / 10.
67.0% of 2020 Passat models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2020 Volkswagen Passat stands out as a practical family sedan that emphasizes space and value. Volkswagen gave it a refresh rather than a complete redesign, so it keeps the familiar formula but wears a new suit for 2020. It is built in Chattanooga, Tennessee, and the description highlights a car that is huge inside like a full-size automobile, priced like a midsize sedan, and thrifty with gas like a compact car. Those traits make it appealing to buyers who want a roomy, economical sedan without paying a premium.
Its strengths are straightforward: it is spacious, offers plenty of cargo space, and is considered an excellent value for money. At the same time, the 2020 Volkswagen Passat is not trying to hide its age. The available information points to outdated technology and poor ride quality, and the broader takeaway is that it really needed a redesign rather than a restyle. Even so, for shoppers focused on comfort, space, and affordability, it remains an easy car to understand and a sensible choice.

Loaded with luxury items, comfortable for driver and all passengers, this a great value for the money, gets fantastic fuel economy (30/38 real world mpg), and has lots of safety features. The biggest criticism would be a smallish screen for tech and a lack of serious zoom (I miss my 2015 TDI’s crazy torque). Otherwise, a very solid automobile that can be found for comparatively low prices.

Im not gonna be biased since I have this car. Its a very good car. It isnt just decent. The interior is good. The technology is okay and depending on the year it can actually be really intuitive (watch doug demuros videos). I enjoy driving the car it feels a bit luxurious. Definitely feels nicer than driving a Hyundai Nissan Toyota etc. I just enjoy driving the car. I bought mine used and its still great at 65k miles.

* Comfortable and well-equipment with modem amenities. * Very quiet interior at highway speeds. * Very, very fuel efficient, but adequately powerful when needed. * VW includes rubber floor mats by default. * Excellent handling. Factory tires have superior grip and subject to occasional tramming. Dont panic and hold on to the steering wheel.

Is the 2020 Volkswagen Passat a good car?
Yes — the 2020 Volkswagen Passat earns a 4.6/5 user rating and an 8.00/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Safety at 10/10.
Owners consistently praise the roomy cabin, quiet interior, and strong value for the money. The feedback also points to impressive fuel efficiency and a comfortable, well-equipped feel, with many drivers appreciating the easygoing handling and broad safety coverage.
The trade-offs are familiar: the tech feels dated, and some shoppers want a more advanced entertainment setup for passengers. That lines up with the Passat’s role as a practical family sedan that prioritizes space and value over flash.
For you, that means the Passat makes the most sense if you want a straightforward, roomy sedan that is easy to live with and easy on the budget. It also stands out as a sensible choice if you care more about comfort and utility than the latest cabin tech. Good and great deals account for 26.2% of listings, so there is still meaningful shopping opportunity.
Is the 2020 Volkswagen Passat reliable?
Owners rate it 4.6/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback points to a car that feels dependable, with a quiet cabin, strong value, and a reputation for being easy to live with over time. That same feedback also emphasizes comfort and fuel efficiency, which are the kinds of traits that usually matter most when you plan to keep a car for years.
The expert evaluation reinforces that impression by describing the Passat as simple and predictable, with a powertrain that avoids the complexity of a CVT or dual-clutch setup. It also notes that Volkswagen includes the first two maintenance visits for free, which helps lower early ownership costs.
For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about mechanical drama and more about living with aging technology and a ride that can feel inconsistent.
What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Volkswagen Passat?
At 69.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and confirm whether any prior damage was repaired properly. A pre-purchase inspection is worth prioritizing, especially if you are comparing cars with similar prices but different condition histories. Focus on signs of wear in the cabin, suspension feel, and how well the car’s features still work, since this model’s value depends heavily on getting a clean, well-kept example.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The Passat S is the entry point, and the Passat SE is the easy-to-recommend value choice because it blends equipment and affordability well. The Passat R-Line adds a sportier appearance, while the Passat SEL sits at the top with more convenience and premium touches. Base-trim shoppers should pay close attention to the simpler infotainment setup and the more basic overall presentation.
- Powertrain: Every 2020 Passat uses a turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine with 174 horsepower and 206 pound-feet of torque, paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission. It runs on regular gas and is described as simple and predictable, with enough torque for normal driving.
- Safety package: Standard equipment includes forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot warning, rear cross-traffic warning, and automatic post-collision braking. SE trim adds adaptive cruise control and lane-keeping assist, while SEL adds parking assist sensors and adaptive headlights.
- Infotainment: The touchscreen measures 6.3 inches. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are included through App Connect, along with HD radio, SiriusXM satellite radio, Bluetooth, and a CD player. SEL trim adds navigation and a Fender premium sound system.
- Fuel efficiency: The expert testing loop returned 26 mpg, and the combined rating is 27 mpg.
Which 2020 Volkswagen Passat trim should I buy?
The 2020 Volkswagen Passat is offered in 4 trim levels: Passat S, Passat SE, Passat R-Line, Passat SEL.
Here's the short version:
- Passat S: This is the least expensive way into the Passat, and it still gives you the core space, value, and safety coverage that define the model. It makes sense if you want the lowest entry price and can live with the most basic presentation.
- Passat SE: This is the best-value trim because it adds the most useful everyday equipment without pushing the price into luxury-sedan territory. It is the trim most shoppers should start with if they want the best balance of features and cost.
- Passat R-Line: Choose this if you want the sportier look and are willing to pay more for appearance and the test car’s upgraded wheel-and-tire setup. It is more about style than a major mechanical change.
- Passat SEL: This is the most feature-rich version, adding navigation, a Fender premium sound system, parking assist sensors, and adaptive headlights. It suits you best if you want the most convenience and premium touches in the lineup.
Safety equipment is strong across the lineup, but SE and SEL bring extra driver-assistance features that make them the smarter picks for many used buyers.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Volkswagen Passat?
This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently but should move quickly on the right car.
- Deal availability: 26.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 462 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.06% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 69.3% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $14,851.99, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2020 Volkswagen Passat's resale value?
The current average of $15,148 sits slightly below last year's $16,298.
That price movement suggests the Passat has already absorbed some depreciation, which can help future sellers if they buy at the right price today. A lower entry cost gives you more room to hold value over time, especially if you choose a clean, well-maintained example with desirable equipment.
The model’s strong value reputation should also help keep buyer interest steady when it is time to sell. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.6/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2020 Volkswagen Passat safe?
The 2020 Passat earns the top rating of Good from IIHS.
It earns a 10/10 safety score from our experts.
Volkswagen equips every version with forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot warning, rear cross-traffic warning, and automatic post-collision braking. SE trim adds adaptive cruise control and lane-keeping assist, while SEL adds parking assist sensors and adaptive headlights.
That means even the lower trims come with a strong safety baseline, but SE and SEL are the better choices if you want more driver assistance. The main caveat is that the Passat’s safety strength is paired with older technology elsewhere in the cabin, so you should make sure the features you want are actually present on the trim you are considering.
Should I buy a 2020 Volkswagen Passat or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2020 if:
- 26.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 69.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.06% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.6/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2020 update adds a refreshed look and strong standard safety equipment.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $14,640, the 2021 costs less than the current year's $15,148 average.
- Adaptive cruise control becomes standard across the lineup.
The bottom line: If you want the stronger all-around shopping opportunity, the 2020 is the better target because it combines a lower market price trend with solid safety and strong owner satisfaction. If you are especially price-sensitive and want a slightly cheaper alternative, the 2021 is worth a look, especially if standard adaptive cruise control matters to you.
