Used 2020 Volkswagen Passat for Sale near Alabama

How much does the 2020 Volkswagen Passat cost?

Prices have softened 11.04% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.

There are 451 listings available, which gives you a decent amount of inventory to compare before you buy.

Is the 2020 Volkswagen Passat a good car?

Yes — the 2020 Volkswagen Passat earns a 4.6/5 user rating, and our experts give it an 8/10 overall score.

The standout strength is Safety at 10/10.

Owners consistently praise its spacious cabin, excellent value for money, and quiet, comfortable feel. The review summary also points to impressive fuel efficiency and a luxury-like vibe, while noting that the car is easy to live with and offers plenty of safety features.

The trade-offs are familiar ones: outdated technology and a smaller tech screen, plus a desire for more advanced entertainment options. In practical terms, this is a strong fit if you want a roomy, value-focused family sedan and can live with older-feeling tech. Good and great deals account for 34.6% of listings, so there are still attractive buys in the market.

Is the 2020 Volkswagen Passat reliable?

Owners rate it 4.6/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

The owner feedback points to a dependable, trouble-free ownership experience, with language that emphasizes comfort, value, and a car you can count on over time. The expert evaluation also describes the Passat as simple and predictable to drive, which supports the impression of an easygoing, low-drama sedan.

Volkswagen also includes the first two maintenance visits for free, which helps reduce early ownership costs. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is that age-related wear may show up in the car’s outdated tech and ride quality.

What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Volkswagen Passat?

At 69.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a careful inspection of bodywork, tires, brakes, and suspension. Because this model’s age shows through in its ride and technology, condition matters more than mileage alone. Focus on how the car drives over rough pavement and whether all safety and infotainment features work as expected.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base car is the Passat S, and it comes with the essentials, but the SE is easy to recommend for its blend of value and equipment. The R-Line adds a sportier look, while the SEL sits at the top with more convenience and premium touches.
• Powertrain: Every 2020 Passat uses a turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine with 174 horsepower and 206 pound-feet of torque, paired with a 6-speed automatic. It runs on regular gas and is tuned for simple, predictable everyday driving rather than excitement.
• Safety package: Standard equipment includes forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot warning, rear cross-traffic warning, and automatic post-collision braking. SE adds adaptive cruise control and lane-keeping assist, while SEL adds parking assist sensors and adaptive headlights.
• Infotainment: The Passat uses a 6.3-inch touchscreen and includes App Connect with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, plus HD and SiriusXM satellite radio, Bluetooth, and a CD player. SEL adds navigation and a Fender premium sound system.
• Fuel efficiency: The Passat averaged 26 mpg in testing, and the EPA combined rating is 27 mpg.

Which 2020 Volkswagen Passat trim should I buy?

The 2020 Volkswagen Passat is offered in 4 trim levels: Passat S, Passat SE, Passat R-Line, Passat SEL.

Here's the short version:

• Passat S: This is the least expensive way into the Passat, and it gives you the core safety and practicality that define the car. It makes sense if you want the lowest entry price and can live without the extra convenience and premium touches found higher up.
• Passat SE: This is the best-value trim. It adds adaptive cruise control and lane-keeping assist, and it strikes the strongest balance between equipment and price for most shoppers.
• Passat R-Line: Choose this if you want the sportier appearance and the 19-inch wheels and tires that come with the test car’s setup. It is more about style and road presence than a major mechanical upgrade.
• Passat SEL: This is the most feature-rich version, adding navigation, a Fender premium sound system, parking assist sensors, and adaptive headlights. It suits you if you want the most comfort and convenience features in the lineup.

Safety equipment is strong across the range, but SE and SEL bring the most meaningful extra driver-assistance features.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Volkswagen Passat?

This is a moderate market for selective buyers, with enough inventory and pricing softness to reward careful shopping.

• Deal availability: 34.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 451 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 11.04% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 69.6% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $14,170, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2020 Volkswagen Passat's resale value?

The current average of $14,175 sits slightly below last year's $15,934.

That decline suggests the Passat has become more affordable for buyers, but it also means sellers may face a softer market than they did a year ago. If you plan to sell later, the good news is that the model’s value has already adjusted downward, which can make it easier to attract budget-conscious shoppers. The downside is that resale upside may be limited unless your car is especially clean, well maintained, and well equipped.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.6/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2020 Volkswagen Passat safe?

The 2020 Passat earns the top rating of Good from IIHS.

It earns a 10/10 safety score from our experts.

Every version includes forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot warning, rear cross-traffic warning, and automatic post-collision braking. SE adds adaptive cruise control with multiple distance settings and lane-keeping assist, while SEL adds parking assist sensors and adaptive headlights. The main caveat is that lane-keeping assist does not include a separate lane-centering function.

Should I buy a 2020 Volkswagen Passat or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2020 if:

• 34.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 69.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 11.04% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.6/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It combines a roomy cabin, strong value, and a 2020 refresh that modernized the formula without changing the core appeal.

Consider the 2021 if:

• At $14,269, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $14,175 average.
• Adaptive cruise control becomes standard across the lineup.

The bottom line: If you want the better value play, the 2020 is the smarter buy because it offers the refreshed design and lower average price. If you want a slightly newer model with standard adaptive cruise control and don’t mind paying more, the 2021 is the cleaner alternative.
