Is the 2020 Toyota Tacoma a good car?

Generally — the 2020 Toyota Tacoma earns 4.3/5 from owners and 7.5/10 from our experts. The model scores 8/10 across Look and feel, Form and function, and Safety.

Drivers repeatedly point to its reliability, performance, and design, along with its practicality and strong off-road capabilities. The trade-offs are familiar too: pricing runs a bit high, and some features like heated seats and navigation are missing. In use, it’s a truck that prioritizes toughness, size, and off-road confidence over refinement.

With 34.4% of listings priced as good or great deals, you have some room to shop selectively.

Is the 2020 Toyota Tacoma reliable?

Owners rate it 4.3/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.

User feedback highlights reliability, and the truck’s practical, dependable character comes through in the expert notes as well. The Tacoma is described as a vehicle that keeps buyers coming back because of its capability and dependable off-road features, and it’s presented as something you can count on for rugged use. The expert review also emphasizes that the truck’s straightforward hardware is built for durability.

For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is accepting a truck that may be dependable but still feels rough, noisy, and less refined than newer rivals.

What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Toyota Tacoma?

At 66% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should run a vehicle history report before you get too far into the process, then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection if the truck has off-road use, higher mileage, or visible wear. Focus on condition first: cabin wear, suspension components, tires, and any signs that the truck was used hard. If you’re comparing multiple listings, the cleanest example with the best maintenance history is usually worth the premium.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base SR and SR5 are the least equipped, while higher trims add more capability and convenience. The Limited trim brings 18-inch wheels, and the TRD Pro adds LED headlights with TRD/PRO lighting, sequential turn signals, a skid plate, Fox Racing shocks, black TRD wheels, and all-terrain tires.
• Powertrain: The 2.7-liter four-cylinder makes 159 horsepower and 180 pound-feet of torque and is limited to the base SR and SR5. The 3.5-liter V6 makes 278 hp and 265 lb-ft, is standard on the rest of the lineup, and pairs with rear-wheel drive unless you choose a 4WD setup.
• Safety package: Standard driver assists include adaptive cruise control, forward-emergency braking with pedestrian detection, and lane-departure warning. Blind-spot monitoring and parking sensors are optional, and the Technology Package adds blind-spot monitoring.
• Infotainment: A 7-inch touchscreen is standard, while an 8-inch unit with navigation is available. Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Amazon Alexa are standard, and wireless phone charging and onboard Wi-Fi are available.
• Fuel efficiency: The inline-four returns 20 mpg city and 23 mpg highway, while the V6 returns 18 mpg city and 22 mpg highway.

Which 2020 Toyota Tacoma trim should I buy?

The 2020 Toyota Tacoma is offered in 4 trim levels: SR, SR5, TRD Sport, and TRD Pro.

Here's the short version:

• SR: This is the entry point, and it makes sense only if you want the lowest starting price and can live with the least powerful engine and the fewest features.
• SR5: This is the better starting point for most shoppers because it opens the door to the V6 and gives you a more usable everyday truck without jumping too far up the price ladder.
• TRD Sport: This is the best-value choice if you want a stronger mix of capability and equipment, especially if you want a more appealing all-around Tacoma without going all the way to the top.
• TRD Pro: This is the one to buy if you want the most off-road-focused Tacoma, with the most aggressive hardware and the strongest trail-ready setup.

The safety package includes standard adaptive cruise control, forward-emergency braking with pedestrian detection, and lane-departure warning, while blind-spot monitoring remains optional.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Toyota Tacoma?

This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so it pays to compare listings carefully and move quickly on the right truck.

• Deal availability: 34.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 4,154 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 1.38% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 66.0% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $29,298, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2020 Toyota Tacoma's resale value?

The current average of $30,263 sits slightly below last year's $30,688.

That mild decline suggests the market has softened a bit, which can help you as a buyer today but may trim upside for a future seller. Even so, the Tacoma’s pricing remains relatively resilient for a used truck, especially when you compare it with the broader market’s appetite for this model. Well-kept examples should continue to draw attention because shoppers still value the Tacoma’s reputation and capability.

Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.3/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2020 Toyota Tacoma safe?

The 2020 Toyota Tacoma earns an IIHS Top Safety Pick rating and four-star ratings in frontal tests and side barrier and pole tests from NHTSA, with five-star ratings for rear passengers.

It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

Standard safety equipment includes forward-emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane-departure warning, and adaptive cruise control. Blind-spot monitoring and parking sensors are optional, so you’ll want to check whether a used listing includes the extra driver-assistance gear you want. The lower Acceptable result in the small overlap test is the main caveat to keep in mind.

Should I buy a 2020 Toyota Tacoma or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2020 if:

• 34.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 66% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 1.38% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.3/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
• It adds useful design and technology updates while keeping the Tacoma’s rugged, off-road-focused character.

Consider the 2019 if:

• At $28,908, the 2019 costs less than the current year's $30,263 average.
• It emphasizes raw honesty and loyal-following appeal.

Consider the 2021 if:

• At $31,908, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $30,263 average.
• It adds two special editions and standard dual-zone climate control on V6 models.

The bottom line: If you want the current-year balance of updates, availability, and familiar Tacoma toughness, the 2020 is the main target. If price matters most, the 2019 can save you money; if you want the newer special editions and a few extra conveniences, the 2021 is the better stretch.
