CarGurus Analysis: 2020 Toyota Prius
overall

Summary
With 271 currently listed for sale and an average price of $21,670.00, 31.7% of 2020 Toyota Priuses for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2020 Toyota Prius 4.8 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.5 / 10.
61.3% of 2020 Prius models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2020 Toyota Prius stands out as a dedicated hybrid that has long served as a benchmark in its segment. It is described as a leader among hybrids thanks to its versatility and technology, and its fuel-efficiency focus is presented as a core part of its appeal without giving up style, drivability, or versatility. That combination helps explain why it remains such a recognizable name in hybrids.
For buyers, the Prius’s biggest strengths are straightforward: it is fuel-efficient and comes with standard advanced safety features. The available all-wheel-drive variant adds another layer of appeal for shoppers who want hybrid efficiency with extra traction. Owners also tend to praise its gas mileage, practicality, cargo space, handling, and value for money.
The main drawback noted is its potentially polarizing design, which may not appeal to everyone. Some owners also miss luxury touches such as GPS and leather seats, and complaints about the absence of a spare tire and an annoying backup beep suggest that the Prius prioritizes efficiency and practicality over premium extras.

It has great gas mileage, good handling, good looks. The sunroof was a necessary feature so I only looked at models with a sunroof. I really like that the car holds its value. I do not like that it has no spare tire.

This is our 5th Prius, and we would drive no other car. The 2020 we bought has so many good safety features. After 1 week, we have 60 MPH average.

LE trim is just right. A little shocking at first with missing luxuries (I traded my Tesla). But as a pragmatic car that is enjoyable to drive, has great cargo space- it makes sense and is fun. I get 58mph so far without trying. Not infinite like my electric was, but I don’t have to charge 45 min every two weeks. Gas once a month works great. The backup beep is really annoying, but carista works and you can turn it off.

What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Toyota Prius?
At 59.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has had bodywork or shows uneven panel gaps, tire wear, or warning lights. Focus on condition, maintenance records, and whether the hybrid system has been serviced properly. Because this model is efficiency-focused, small signs of neglect can matter more than they might on a simpler car.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The L Eco starts with cloth upholstery, a 7-inch touchscreen, and basic convenience features, while the LE adds parking sensors and a few practical upgrades. The XLE brings heated front seats, synthetic leather upholstery, and wireless device charging, and the Limited adds the largest screen plus a head-up display.
- Powertrain: Every trim uses a 1.8-liter four-cylinder hybrid setup with 121 horsepower and 105 pound-feet of torque. Front-wheel drive is standard, and the AWD variant adds a rear electric motor that only operates up to 43 mph.
- Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard and includes automatic emergency braking, forward-collision warning, lane-departure warning, adaptive cruise control, and automatic high beams. Blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, parking sensors, active park assist, and lane-tracing assist are available, with some features reserved for higher trims or options.
- Infotainment: The standard system uses a 7-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Amazon Alexa compatibility, Bluetooth, WiFi hotspot capability, and three USB ports. The Limited upgrades to an 11.6-inch screen, but that setup loses Android Auto.
- Fuel efficiency: The Eco trim returns 58 mpg city, 53 highway, 56 combined. The standard Prius returns 54 mpg city, 50 highway, 52 combined, and AWD lowers estimates to 52 mpg city, 48 highway, 50 combined.
Which 2020 Toyota Prius trim should I buy?
The 2020 Toyota Prius is offered in 4 trim levels: L Eco, LE, XLE, and Limited.
Here's the short version:
- Base trim: The L Eco is the value play, but it keeps things simple with cloth upholstery, a 7-inch screen, and fewer convenience upgrades than higher trims.
- Sweet-spot trim: The LE is the best middle ground if you want useful extras like parking sensors and cargo-area practicality without jumping too far in price.
- Premium/top trim: The Limited is the most feature-rich choice, with the largest infotainment screen, head-up display, and added audio and convenience tech.
- Safety-package trim: Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard across the lineup, so you do not need to move up a trim just to get the core driver-assistance suite.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Toyota Prius?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.
- Deal availability: 32.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 266 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices are up 4.09% year-over-year.
- Clean inventory: 59.8% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $19,066.24, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2020 Toyota Prius's resale value?
The current average of $21,641 sits slightly above last year's $20,792.
That upward move suggests the Prius has held demand well, which can help support resale value if you buy carefully and maintain the car properly. A model with strong fuel economy and broad appeal tends to stay relevant with used shoppers, especially when inventory is not especially abundant. If you keep mileage, condition, and service records in good shape, you should be in a better position when it is time to sell.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.8/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2020 Toyota Prius safe?
It earns a five-star rating from NHTSA and was a Top Safety Pick from IIHS, though it missed the higher Top Safety Pick+ mark because of average results in the passenger-side small overlap front crash test and headlight testing.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard and includes automatic emergency braking, forward-collision warning, lane-departure warning, adaptive cruise control, and automatic high beams. Available upgrades include blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, front-and-rear parking sensors, active park assist, and lane-tracing assist. If you want the fullest safety setup, you may need to move beyond the base configuration for some of those extras.
Should I buy a 2020 Toyota Prius or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2020 if:
- 32.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 59.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices are up 4.09% year-over-year.
- Owners rate it 4.8/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It balances strong efficiency with standard advanced safety features and available AWD.
Consider the 2019 if:
- At $19,448, the 2019 costs less than the current year's $21,641 average.
- It is practical, efficient, and easy to live with.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $21,741, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $21,641 average.
- It adds standard Android Auto and broader standard driver-assistance coverage.
The bottom line: The 2020 is a smart pick if you want the Prius formula with strong safety, good efficiency, and a decent number of deal opportunities. If your priority is saving money, the 2019 is the better value path; if you want the newer tech updates, the 2021 is worth the extra spend.
