Why it stands out
The 2020 Toyota Corolla stands out by adding style and a bit of enjoyment to a nameplate long associated with affordability, reliability, efficiency, and practicality. It remains a compact sedan that is cheap to buy, dependable, thrifty with fuel, and roomy enough for a frugal family, but this redesigned version brings a more engaging personality than the Corolla has traditionally been known for.
It also offers a manual transmission, premium interior materials, and standard advanced safety features, which help it feel more appealing than a basic commuter car. Owners echo many of those strengths, praising its excellent fuel economy, reliable performance, modern safety features, stylish design, and good value. The main drawback is comfort: the seats are described as uncomfortable, and some owners also mention that the back legroom is a bit tight and that sound insulation could be better on longer drives.

I bought a 2020 Toyota Corolla LE and owned it for about a year and a half. It rides smooth, has great safety features, and is amazing with gas mileage. I was averaging a combined 36.7mpg everywhere I went. I’ve never owned a vehicle so new, so getting used to the fancy new cruise control that matches the speed of the vehicle in front of you took some getting used to. The lane assist was a really cool feature! However, I live in the desert of New Mexico, so if the sun hits the road just right, it’ll bounce off the painted stripes and make it unrecognizable to the sensors. Other than that, it’s a great feature! For a compact car, it has enough space for a single person or a family of two or three. Spacious cargo bay! The leg room is a little tight in the back, especially if the driver or passenger scoots back a little. That being said, I was hoping the seats would be a little more comfy being a 2020 model. Kinda stiff and not super comfortable for 1hr+ rides. Not bad, but could be better. All in all, this is a great car with great safety features that I would recommend to anyone, even a new driver thanks to the warning systems aboard! Love it.

It is a manual transmission. I was searching for the S PLUS model but since they were discontinued, I saw that this model was similar (smart key/push button starter) That is a plus, you will never lock your car with the keys inside. Mainly (the manual Transmission) I have been driving manual transmission for over 30 years, I wish they would never stop making them. I am very impressed with Corollas because of there reliability. The prevoius 3 vehicles all have been Corollas Manual Transmission, the last one was a 2015 S PLUS model I purchased in February 2018 with 54K miles on it. It currently has 391K and I never had a break down or been stranded, not even the clutch, all Ive done was change the oil every 5K, tires, battery, breaks, shocks and struts when needed. Corolla is an excellent reliable vehicle.

How much does the 2020 Toyota Corolla cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $16,630 |
| Year-Round Low | $15,781 |
| Year-Round High | $16,849 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $16,849 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −1.29% |
Prices have softened 1.29% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 2,384 listings available, which gives you a solid pool to compare prices and equipment.
Is the 2020 Toyota Corolla a good car?
Yes — you’re looking at a 4.69/5 user-rated car with an expert score of 7/10. The standout strength is Look and feel at 8/10.
Owners consistently praise the Corolla’s excellent fuel economy, reliable performance, modern safety features, stylish design, and good value. For you, that means this model year fits especially well if you want a practical compact sedan that still feels more polished and more engaging than a basic commuter car.
The main trade-offs are comfort-related: some owners mention tight back legroom, less-than-ideal sound insulation, and seats that could be more comfortable on longer drives. That makes it a stronger match if your priorities are efficiency, value, and everyday usability rather than plush ride comfort.
With its compact-sedan packaging and family-friendly practicality, it makes sense if you want affordable transportation that still feels modern. The market also shows 29.2% good or great deals, which suggests there are worthwhile opportunities if you shop carefully.
Is the 2020 Toyota Corolla reliable?
Owners rate it 4.69/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback points to reliable performance, dependable day-to-day use, and a car that many people feel good about keeping for the long haul. That kind of language matters because it suggests the Corolla is the sort of used car you can count on for routine commuting and ownership without much drama.
The expert notes also reinforce that theme by describing the Corolla as dependable and thrifty with fuel, which lines up with the ownership experience buyers tend to want from this nameplate. Toyota also includes a 3-year free trial of Safety Connect services, which adds some ownership convenience.
For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about mechanical drama and more about whether the car was maintained well and treated gently, especially given the comfort and noise complaints some owners raise.
What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Toyota Corolla?
At 59.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has had bodywork or shows uneven panel gaps, tire wear, or interior wear that doesn’t match the mileage. Focus your test drive on seat comfort, cabin noise, and how the car behaves at highway speeds, since those are the areas owners and testers most often flag.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The L trim is the most basic version, while LE and XLE add more comfort and convenience, and SE and XSE bring a sportier look and more premium interior materials. The base setup is the one most likely to feel sparse if you want a more upscale cabin.
- Powertrain: L, LE, and XLE use a 1.8-liter 4-cylinder with 139 horsepower, while SE and XSE get a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder with 169 horsepower. The SE also offers a 6-speed manual, while the other gas trims use a CVT.
- Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard and includes low-light pedestrian detection, daytime cyclist detection, road-sign recognition, and Lane Tracing Assist. Blind-spot monitoring is standard on XLE and XSE and optional on LE and SE, but it does not include rear cross-traffic alert.
- Infotainment: The Corolla uses Entune 3.0 with Apple CarPlay, but not Android Auto. LE and higher get an 8-inch display instead of a 7-inch screen, and wireless device charging is available on XSE and XLE.
- Fuel efficiency: The hybrid LE is rated at 52 mpg combined, and the gas model tested here returned 31 mpg city, 38 highway, and 34 combined.
Which 2020 Toyota Corolla trim should I buy?
The 2020 Toyota Corolla is offered in 5 trim levels: L, LE, XLE, SE, XSE.
Here's the short version:
- L: This is the least expensive way into the Corolla, but it’s also the most stripped-down. Choose it only if your priority is the lowest possible entry price and you’re comfortable with a basic setup.
- LE: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds useful everyday equipment without pushing the price too far. It also gets the larger 8-inch display, which makes the cabin feel more modern.
- XLE: Pick this if you want a more upscale-feeling Corolla with more comfort and convenience features. It’s the trim that leans most clearly toward a nicer daily-driver experience.
- SE: This is the trim to choose if you want the sportier look and the more powerful 2.0-liter engine, and it’s the one that can be paired with a 6-speed manual. It’s the enthusiast-friendly choice.
- XSE: This is the most premium and most fully featured gas trim, combining the stronger engine with the nicest presentation and available extras. It’s the one to buy if you want the most polished Corolla experience.
Blind-spot monitoring is standard on XLE and XSE, while LE and SE get it only as an option.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Toyota Corolla?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you’re patient.
- Deal availability: 29.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 2,384 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 1.29% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 59.2% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $15,781, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2020 Toyota Corolla's resale value?
The current average of $16,630 sits slightly below last year's $16,849.
That tells you the Corolla has softened a bit in the market, which can help you as a buyer today but may also mean future resale gains are likely to be gradual rather than dramatic. If you plan to sell later, the current pricing suggests the car is holding value reasonably well, but not appreciating.
For a future seller, the key takeaway is that a well-kept Corolla should remain easy to move because it still checks the boxes many used-car shoppers want: efficiency, practicality, and a strong reputation. Lower current pricing can also make it easier to buy at a sensible entry point, which helps protect your ownership economics over time.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.69/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2020 Toyota Corolla safe?
The 2020 Toyota Corolla earns a five-star frontal-impact rating from NHTSA, and the IIHS named it a Top Safety Pick.
It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.
Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard, and it includes low-light pedestrian detection, daytime cyclist detection, road-sign recognition, and Lane Tracing Assist. Lane Tracing Assist works with adaptive cruise control to help keep the car centered in its lane.
A notable caveat is that blind-spot monitoring is not standard on every trim, and when equipped it does not include rear cross-traffic alert. The lane-departure warning’s aural alert is also described as irritating, which may matter if you’re sensitive to warning chimes.
Should I buy a 2020 Toyota Corolla or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2020 if:
- 29.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 59.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 1.29% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.69/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2020 adds a more engaging personality, plus standard advanced safety features and a manual transmission option.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $17,059, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $16,630 average.
- It adds a limited-production Apex Edition with a track-tuned suspension and sport exhaust.
The bottom line: If you want the better value today, the 2020 is the smarter starting point because it combines a lower average price with strong owner satisfaction and broad market availability. If you’re willing to pay more for a newer model-year twist and the Apex Edition’s extra sportiness, the 2021 is the better alternative.
