CarGurus Analysis: 2020 Toyota 4Runner
overall

Summary
With 208 currently listed for sale near Indianapolis, IN and an average price of $34,240, 29.8% of 2020 Toyota 4Runners for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2020 Toyota 4Runner 4.85 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 6.83 / 10.
89.9% of 2020 4Runner models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2020 Toyota 4Runner stands out as a vehicle built around capability rather than compromise. Even in its expensive Limited trim, it remains clearly purpose-built for tackling terrain, and it looks most at home when it is outside the typical car’s comfort zone. That makes it appealing to buyers who want a rugged SUV that feels ready for dusty cow paths or snowy mountain roads instead of polished pavement.
Toyota also gives the 2020 4Runner enough chrome and leather to market it as a rough-and-tumble luxury alternative, which broadens its appeal beyond pure off-road use. Its strengths include standard advanced safety features, a powerful engine, and off-road capability. The tradeoffs are just as clear: it is a poor value for money, returns poor fuel economy, and its interior materials feel cheap.

Love the color and the ability to do anything in this bad boy. Drives off road super smooth and easy, drives on paced road as smooth as the SR5. This is the perfect vehicle.

The perfect dinosaur for me! I chose this make and model specifically for its older tech and build quality. Is it fast, no. Does it sip gas, nope. Does it feel solid, yes. This is my second one. The first is still running great at 20 years old. My only gripe is the type of OEM step bars. Easy to get in, but not the best for getting out of the vehicle. They will be swapped. Problem solved. This is a popular platform but it isn't the right vehicle for everyone. If you are considering a 4Runner, watch the Care Care Nut's review of the 5th gen 4Runners FIRST. Know what you are buying. I have had a Lexus and 2 different 4 Runners. These are the best vehicles I have ever owned and that’s comparing them to Volvo, Dodge, Jeep, and BMW. The only thing I have a problem with is gas mileage but that’s what you get when you have 4 wheel drive. It would be nice if it had the push button lift for the tail gate but no big deal. They are awesome vehicles. I am on my 4th Toyota/Lexus brand.

This 2020 4 Runner is a great choice. I have a very active lifestyle. I surf, snowboard, cycle and take my two dogs almost everywhere I go. So this vehicle is perfect for what I need. The SR5 Premium model has just enough nice features that it feels like your driving a luxury car minus the high price tag. If you are looking for a true goat of a truck I recommend this vehicle.

Is the 2020 Toyota 4Runner a good car?
Yes — the 2020 Toyota 4Runner earns a 4.85/5 user rating and a 6.83/10 expert rating. The model scores 8/10 across Performance and Form and function.
Owners consistently praise its ruggedness, reliability, and value retention, and many also highlight its comfort, safety features, and off-road capability. In practical terms, that lines up with an SUV that feels built for durability and utility rather than polished-road refinement.
The trade-offs are clear: it is a poor value for money, returns poor fuel economy, and its interior materials feel cheap. That makes it a better fit if you want a rugged SUV for terrain and tough conditions than if you want a refined daily driver. Even so, 32.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals, so you can still find competitive offers.
Is the 2020 Toyota 4Runner reliable?
Owners rate it 4.85/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
Owners describe it as rugged, reliable, and durable, and they also point to value retention as part of its appeal. The expert evaluation reinforces that theme by noting the engine’s longevity and the 4Runner’s tough, body-on-frame construction.
Toyota also includes a suite of standard driver-assistance features, which adds confidence for everyday use. For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is that age, efficiency, and interior wear may matter more than the drivetrain’s reputation for durability.
What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Toyota 4Runner?
At 69.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle-history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you are considering a higher-mileage example or one that may have seen off-road use. Focus on overall condition, signs of wear in the cabin, and evidence that the truck has been maintained consistently.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The lineup includes SR5, SR5 Premium, TRD Off-Road, TRD Off-Road Premium, TRD Pro, Limited, Nightshade Special Edition, and Venture Special Edition. Lower trims come with cloth, while the SR5 Premium and TRD Off-Road Premium add SofTex; the Limited leans more toward comfort with leather upholstery, and the Venture adds 17-inch TRD wheels and a standard Yakima Megawarrior roof rack.
- Powertrain: Every trim uses a 4.0-liter V6 with a 5-speed automatic transmission, making 270 horsepower and 278 pound-feet of torque. It can tow up to 5,000 pounds, but the setup is tuned for durability and off-road use rather than smoothness or efficiency.
- Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense P includes adaptive cruise control, lane-departure alert, a pre-collision system with pedestrian detection, and automatic high beams. All trims get eight standard airbags, but the lane-departure system is reactive rather than a more active lane-keeping setup.
- Infotainment: You get an 8-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The system also supports Amazon Alexa, Bluetooth, and subscription services, while higher trims add a JBL stereo and navigation.
- Fuel efficiency: The EPA estimates 16 mpg city, 19 highway, 17 combined.
Which 2020 Toyota 4Runner trim should I buy?
The 2020 Toyota 4Runner is offered in 8 trim levels: SR5, SR5 Premium, TRD Off-Road, TRD Off-Road Premium, TRD Pro, Limited, Nightshade Special Edition, and Venture Special Edition.
Here's the short version:
- SR5: This is the entry point, and it gives you the core 4Runner formula without the extra equipment that pushes the price higher. It makes sense if you want the basic rugged SUV experience and plan to add only what you need.
- SR5 Premium: This is the best-value trim if you want a more comfortable daily driver without jumping too far up the price ladder. The added SofTex upholstery makes it feel more upscale than the base model while keeping the 4Runner’s core capability intact.
- TRD Off-Road: Choose this if you want the strongest trail-focused hardware without paying for the top-end TRD Pro. It is the trim that best matches the 4Runner’s off-road personality.
- TRD Off-Road Premium: This is the right pick if you want the off-road hardware plus a nicer cabin. It adds comfort-oriented touches while keeping the rugged character intact.
- TRD Pro: This is the one to buy if you want the most serious factory off-road setup and do not mind paying for it. It is the most specialized choice in the lineup.
- Limited: Pick this if you care more about comfort and a more upscale feel than trail-first equipment. Leather upholstery and chrome-heavy styling make it the most luxury-leaning version.
- Nightshade Special Edition: This is mainly for shoppers who want a stealthier look with blacked-out trim pieces. It is more about appearance than a major capability change.
- Venture Special Edition: This is the smart choice if you want a distinctive off-road look and useful gear like the standard roof rack without going all the way to TRD Pro pricing.
Toyota Safety Sense P is standard, so you do not need to move up the lineup to get the core driver-assistance suite.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Toyota 4Runner?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, with enough inventory and deal activity to make shopping worthwhile if you are patient.
- Deal availability: 32.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 2,392 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 1.60% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 69.5% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $33,532, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2020 Toyota 4Runner's resale value?
The current average of $35,421 sits slightly below last year's $35,997.
That mild decline suggests the market has eased a bit, which can help you as a buyer today but may temper short-term upside if you plan to resell soon. Even so, the 4Runner’s reputation for durability and strong demand among loyal shoppers helps support long-term value.
Because this model year still attracts buyers who want rugged utility, it should remain easier to move than many less distinctive SUVs. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.85/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2020 Toyota 4Runner safe?
The 2020 Toyota 4Runner earns four-star ratings overall from NHTSA and three-star ratings in rollover testing, while IIHS gave it Good scores in all crash tests except the small overlap front: driver-side test, where it scored Marginal.
It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.
Toyota Safety Sense P is standard and includes adaptive cruise control, lane-departure alert, a pre-collision system with pedestrian detection, and automatic high beams. The 4Runner also comes with eight standard airbags.
The main caveat is the Marginal IIHS result and the relatively high center of gravity, which help explain why the SUV’s safety story is stronger on active features than on crash-test perfection.
Should I buy a 2020 Toyota 4Runner or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2020 if:
- 32.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 69.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 1.60% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.85/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- For 2020, Toyota adds modern infotainment and standard Toyota Safety Sense P while keeping the rugged 4Runner formula intact.
Consider the 2019 if:
- At $32,014, the 2019 costs less than the current year's $35,421 average.
- It is a rugged, off-road-focused SUV with proven hardware and strong everyday livability.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $37,237, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $35,421 average.
- It keeps the same rugged formula while leaning on reliability, resale value, and go-anywhere capability.
The bottom line: If you want the best balance of price, features, and the 4Runner’s core rugged character, the 2020 is the primary year to target. If you are especially price-sensitive, the 2019 can save you money while preserving much of the same appeal.
