CarGurus Analysis: 2020 Toyota 4Runner
overall

Summary
With 223 currently listed for sale near Birmingham, AL and an average price of $35,999.00, 32.3% of 2020 Toyota 4Runners for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2020 Toyota 4Runner 4.85 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 6.83 / 10.
91.9% of 2020 4Runner models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2020 Toyota 4Runner stands out as a vehicle built around a clear purpose rather than broad compromise. It feels most at home when the road gets rough, whether that means a dusty cow path or a snowy mountain road, and it is especially appealing to buyers who want a rugged SUV that can handle terrain outside the typical car’s comfort zone. Even in Limited trim, it still leans into that mission, with enough chrome and leather to present itself as a rough-and-tumble luxury alternative.
That focus comes with tradeoffs. The 2020 Toyota 4Runner’s strengths include standard advanced safety features, a powerful engine, and off-road capability, but it is also described as poor value for money, with poor fuel economy and interior materials that feel cheap. For shoppers who truly need four-wheel drive and prioritize durability and capability over refinement, those compromises may be easier to accept.

Love the color and the ability to do anything in this bad boy. Drives off road super smooth and easy, drives on paced road as smooth as the SR5. This is the perfect vehicle.

The perfect dinosaur for me! I chose this make and model specifically for its older tech and build quality. Is it fast, no. Does it sip gas, nope. Does it feel solid, yes. This is my second one. The first is still running great at 20 years old. My only gripe is the type of OEM step bars. Easy to get in, but not the best for getting out of the vehicle. They will be swapped. Problem solved. This is a popular platform but it isn't the right vehicle for everyone. If you are considering a 4Runner, watch the Care Care Nut's review of the 5th gen 4Runners FIRST. Know what you are buying. I have had a Lexus and 2 different 4 Runners. These are the best vehicles I have ever owned and that’s comparing them to Volvo, Dodge, Jeep, and BMW. The only thing I have a problem with is gas mileage but that’s what you get when you have 4 wheel drive. It would be nice if it had the push button lift for the tail gate but no big deal. They are awesome vehicles. I am on my 4th Toyota/Lexus brand.

This 2020 4 Runner is a great choice. I have a very active lifestyle. I surf, snowboard, cycle and take my two dogs almost everywhere I go. So this vehicle is perfect for what I need. The SR5 Premium model has just enough nice features that it feels like your driving a luxury car minus the high price tag. If you are looking for a true goat of a truck I recommend this vehicle.

Is the 2020 Toyota 4Runner a good car?
Yes — the 2020 Toyota 4Runner earns a 4.85/5 user rating and a 6.83/10 expert rating. The model scores 8/10 across Performance and Form and function.
Owners consistently praise its ruggedness, reliability, and value retention, and they also highlight comfort, safety features, and off-road capability. The 4Runner’s purpose-built character fits you best if you want a rugged SUV that can handle rough terrain and still serve as a daily driver. The trade-offs are clear: it is poor value for money, and it brings poor fuel economy plus interior materials that feel cheap. Even so, 31.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals, so there is still room to shop selectively.
Is the 2020 Toyota 4Runner reliable?
Owners rate it 4.85/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback points to ruggedness, reliability, and durability, with many drivers describing it as a vehicle they can count on over time. The expert evaluation also emphasizes the engine’s longevity and the 4Runner’s tough, body-on-frame construction, both of which support its dependability story. Toyota’s maintenance-friendly ownership experience is reinforced by the model’s straightforward mechanical setup. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about inherent durability and more about how hard the vehicle was used off-road or whether maintenance was kept up.
What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Toyota 4Runner?
At 69.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the truck has seen trail use, towing, or winter driving. Focus on signs of wear in the suspension, underbody, tires, and interior, since this model’s rugged mission can hide hard use. It also helps to compare trim equipment carefully, because some versions are much better equipped than others.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The lineup includes SR5, SR5 Premium, TRD Off-Road, TRD Off-Road Premium, TRD Pro, Limited, Nightshade Special Edition, and Venture Special Edition. Lower trims come with cloth seats, while SR5 Premium and TRD Off-Road Premium add SofTex material, and the Limited leans into a more comfort-focused feel with leather upholstery and chrome accents.
- Powertrain: Every trim uses a 4.0-liter V6 with a 5-speed automatic, making 270 horsepower and 278 pound-feet of torque. The setup is built for durability and towing rather than smoothness or efficiency, and it can tow up to 5,000 pounds.
- Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense P includes adaptive cruise control, lane-departure alert, a pre-collision system with pedestrian detection, and automatic high beams. The 4Runner also comes with eight standard airbags.
- Infotainment: You get an 8-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, plus Bluetooth connectivity. Higher trims add features like a JBL stereo and navigation.
- Fuel efficiency: The EPA estimates 16 mpg city, 19 highway, 17 combined.
Which 2020 Toyota 4Runner trim should I buy?
The 2020 Toyota 4Runner is offered in 8 trim levels: SR5, SR5 Premium, TRD Off-Road, TRD Off-Road Premium, TRD Pro, Limited, Nightshade Special Edition, and Venture Special Edition.
Here's the short version:
- SR5: This is the entry point if you want the 4Runner’s core ruggedness without paying for extra trim content. It gives you the same V6, the same basic capability, and the same 8-inch touchscreen, so it makes sense if you care more about the vehicle’s mission than luxury touches.
- SR5 Premium: This is the better-value choice if you want a more comfortable daily driver without jumping into the pricier off-road or luxury trims. The added SofTex upholstery makes it feel more finished while keeping the 4Runner’s straightforward formula intact.
- TRD Off-Road: Choose this if you want the strongest off-road focus without going all the way to the top of the range. It adds the kind of hardware and traction-oriented character that suits buyers who actually plan to use the 4Runner off pavement.
- TRD Off-Road Premium: This is the best-value trim if you want off-road capability plus a nicer cabin. It combines the trail-ready setup with the more upscale interior treatment, making it a smart middle ground.
- TRD Pro: Pick this if off-road performance is your top priority and you want the most serious factory setup. It is the most purpose-built version in the lineup and suits buyers who want maximum capability.
- Limited: This is the trim to buy if you want the 4Runner’s rugged identity with the most comfort-oriented presentation. Leather, chrome, and a more upscale feel make it the best fit for shoppers who spend more time on-road than off-road.
- Nightshade Special Edition: This is mainly for you if style matters and you want a darker, stealthier look. It is less about changing the 4Runner’s mission and more about giving it a distinct appearance.
- Venture Special Edition: This is the pick if you want a more adventurous look and some off-road flavor without stepping all the way to TRD Pro pricing. The 17-inch TRD wheels and standard Yakima Megawarrior roof rack make it stand out.
Toyota Safety Sense P is standard, so you do not need to move up the lineup just to get the core driver-assistance suite.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Toyota 4Runner?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you can shop with some leverage if you know what you want.
- Deal availability: 31.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 2,341 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 1.39% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 69.2% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $33,529.59, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2020 Toyota 4Runner's resale value?
The current average of $35,578 sits slightly below last year's $36,081.
That mild decline suggests the market has softened a bit, which can help you buy more carefully now. For a future seller, the current pricing trend is not a warning sign so much as a reminder that condition and trim matter a lot. Well-kept examples should still hold appeal because this model’s rugged reputation and loyal following support demand.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.85/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2020 Toyota 4Runner safe?
The 2020 Toyota 4Runner earns a four-star overall rating from NHTSA and a Good rating from IIHS, though IIHS gave it a Marginal result in the small overlap front: driver-side test.
It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.
Toyota Safety Sense P is standard, and it includes adaptive cruise control, lane-departure alert, a pre-collision system with pedestrian detection, and automatic high beams. The 4Runner also comes with eight standard airbags. One caveat is that the SUV’s relatively high center of gravity and imprecise steering make its reactive lane-departure alert less reassuring than a more active lane-keeping system would be.
Should I buy a 2020 Toyota 4Runner or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2020 if:
- 31.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 69.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 1.39% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.85/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- Toyota adds Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Toyota Safety Sense P for 2020.
Consider the 2019 if:
- At $32,093, the 2019 costs less than the current year's $35,578 average.
- It emphasizes rugged off-road capability and durability.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $37,190, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $35,578 average.
- It leans harder into reliability, resale value, and everyday usefulness.
The bottom line: If you want the best balance of updated tech and current-market pricing, the 2020 is the sensible default. If your budget is tighter, the 2019 gives you the same basic rugged formula for less. If you are willing to pay more for a newer-year example, the 2021 is the stronger choice for buyers who value the model’s reputation and can accept its compromises.
