overall

Summary
With 615 currently listed for sale and an average price of $21,537, 32.0% of 2020 Subaru WRXs for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.

Why it stands out
The 2020 Subaru WRX stands out as a performance sedan that channels Subaru’s rally heritage into a practical four-door package. It is described as the road-going manifestation of decades in world rally racing, and the car’s appeal comes from distilling Subaru’s chassis and powertrain ideas into a harder-edged daily driver. That makes it distinctive for buyers who want something fun to drive without giving up the everyday usefulness of a sedan.
Its strongest selling points are straightforward: standard all-wheel drive and an available manual transmission. The test-drive data also notes that it blends sensible tech and safety features into an ideal daily driver performance car, which helps broaden its appeal beyond pure enthusiasts. At the same time, the WRX is not presented as a tech leader, and outdated technology is called out as a drawback. Owner feedback reinforces the car’s performance focus, with praise for turbo power, handling, and comfort, while also pointing to interior quality concerns and tire noise at higher speeds.

Ive only had it a couple days but man the cvt is great! The handling is beautiful, you feel stuck on the rode and even during a massive downpour you feel very much in control.

Pretty cool ride for a car that holds its valuable so well. You can really feel the turbo pull when you pass 2-3k rpm. Car has enough power for fun, but can still be smooth enough for a DD. Clutch was relatively light. The interior is pretty cheap (plasticy and terrible sound system), but this is a car to drive for when you want a little bit of umph. Wish they still had a hatchback version - Id have no second thoughts of my next car if that were the case.

Perfect enthusiast family daily driver. If it had a hatch it’d be 100%. I drive for DoorDash and it makes work something I look forward to. Ride comfort is perfect. I even get 30 mpg on highway easy. Only complaint is tire noise above 50 mph. But the sound system bumps hard enough to cover it up. For me this car checks all boxes, I wanted to get the last version of an older model before they dump even more unnecessary technology into it. My last car was the FR-S and while that car was super fun, this one offers similar thrills, more torque, and a lot more utility. Wish the levorg was available state side. Hatch would make it the best car ever.

Loved driving it. It would be nice if the linkage was a little tighter. It is very comfortable and visually appealing.

The WRX also stands out for its standard all-wheel drive and manual transmission, which help define its enthusiast appeal. In use-case terms, it fits you well if you want a practical sedan that still feels engaging on back roads.
The main trade-offs are the outdated technology and the rougher ride that comes with its performance tuning. The cabin quality also draws criticism from owners, so you should expect function and driving enjoyment to matter more than polish.
With 31.8% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have a decent chance of finding a competitively priced example.
Is the 2020 Subaru WRX reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner summary points to a car that feels dependable in the ways that matter most to shoppers who want a fun daily driver: strong turbo power, confident handling, and comfort. The expert test-drive notes also emphasize that the manual transmission feels precise and forgiving enough for normal commuting, which supports the idea that the WRX can be easy to live with over time.
The maintenance and ownership picture looks manageable for a performance sedan, but you should still expect used-car wear to matter more than mileage alone. A careful inspection is especially important if the car has been driven hard or modified.
What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Subaru WRX?
At 60.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially on cars that look modified or unusually worn. Focus on signs of hard use, uneven tire wear, brake condition, and any evidence that the car has been driven aggressively or neglected. Because this model is performance-oriented, condition matters as much as mileage.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The Base trim includes 17-inch alloy wheels, automatic climate control, power front-and-rear windows, Bluetooth, satellite radio, two USB ports, and a 6.5-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The Premium adds 18-inch wheels, halogen fog lights, steering-responsive auto-on/off headlights, heated front seats, a power moonroof, and a larger 7-inch touchscreen. The Limited adds leather upholstery, push-button start, and a 10-way power-adjustable driver’s seat.
- Powertrain: The WRX uses a turbocharged and intercooled 2.0-liter boxer-four with 268 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. It comes with symmetrical all-wheel drive and a standard six-speed manual transmission, while a CVT is also available. The manual is the enthusiast choice, while the CVT adds drive modes and simulated manual-shift control.
- Safety package: EyeSight includes forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, automatic high beams, and adaptive cruise control. Blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and reverse automatic emergency braking are also available. EyeSight is optional on the WRX, so you should confirm whether a specific car has it.
- Infotainment: The WRX comes with a 6.5-inch touchscreen, and a 7-inch screen is available. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are included, and the system is described as easy to use.
- Fuel efficiency: The manual-equipped WRX returns 21 mpg city, 27 highway, 23 combined. The CVT-equipped WRX returns 18 mpg city, 24 highway, 21 combined.
Which 2020 Subaru WRX trim should I buy?
The 2020 Subaru WRX is offered in 3 trim levels: Base, Premium, and Limited.
Here's the short version:
- Base: This is the value play if you want the WRX experience at the lowest entry point. You still get standard all-wheel drive, the turbocharged engine, a six-speed manual, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and the core performance character that defines the car.
- Premium: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds the equipment that makes the WRX feel more complete, including heated front seats, a power moonroof, a larger touchscreen, and upgraded lighting. If you want the sweet spot between price and comfort, this is the one to target.
- Limited: Choose this if you want the more upscale cabin touches, including leather upholstery, push-button start, and the power-adjustable driver’s seat. It makes sense if you plan to keep the car longer and want a more polished daily-driver feel.
EyeSight is optional on the WRX, so check whether the specific trim you’re considering includes it.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Subaru WRX?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile options.
- Deal availability: 31.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 632 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.62% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 60.9% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $20,974, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2020 Subaru WRX's resale value?
The current average of $21,474 sits slightly below last year's $22,282.
That decline suggests the market has softened enough to help you buy more selectively today. For a future seller, that also means resale value will depend heavily on condition, mileage, and how well the car has been maintained. Performance cars can hold interest when they’re clean and well cared for, but rough examples tend to lose appeal faster.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2020 Subaru WRX safe?
The 2020 Subaru WRX earns top marks in testing by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety and is even a 2020 IIHS Top Safety Pick. It also earned a five-star overall safety rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
The WRX comes standard with a full array of front- and side-impact airbags, traction control, and a tire-pressure monitoring system. EyeSight is available and includes forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, automatic high beams, and adaptive cruise control. Blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and reverse automatic emergency braking are also available.
One thing to keep in mind is that EyeSight is not standard on the WRX, so you should verify the equipment on any used example you’re considering.
Should I buy a 2020 Subaru WRX or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2020 if:
- 31.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 60.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.62% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It blends standard all-wheel drive, a manual transmission, and practical sedan usability into a compelling daily driver.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $22,995, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $21,474 average.
- It sharpens the everyday-driving focus while keeping the WRX’s practical sedan format.
The bottom line: If you want the better value, the 2020 is the smarter buy because prices have eased and the model still delivers the core WRX formula. If you’re willing to pay more for the next year’s refinement in overall positioning, the 2021 is the secondary path for shoppers who care less about price and more about moving up a model year.
