How much does the 2020 Mazda CX-5 cost?

Prices have softened 1.77% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.

There are 2,489 listings available, which suggests solid inventory for shoppers comparing trims and conditions.

Is the 2020 Mazda CX-5 a good car?

Yes — the 2020 Mazda CX-5 earns a 4.83/5 user rating and a 7.67/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Safety at 10/10.

Owners consistently praise the comfortable interior, smooth and quiet ride, and the ample power on the highway. They also highlight the luxurious feel and safety features, which fit the CX-5’s upscale positioning.

The main trade-offs are limited cargo space and rear legroom, along with some complaints about the engine wanting more power. That makes the CX-5 especially appealing if you value a premium-feeling compact SUV for daily driving rather than maximum utility.

The model’s premium interior, stylish design, and fun-to-drive character line up well with shoppers who want a mainstream compact crossover that feels more upscale than average. Good and great deals account for 38.5% of listings, so there is still room to shop selectively.

Is the 2020 Mazda CX-5 reliable?

Owners rate it 4.83/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

The owner feedback points to a vehicle that feels comfortable, quiet, and satisfying over time, with many drivers describing it as luxurious and dependable in everyday use. The expert evaluation also emphasizes Mazda’s quality and substance, reinforcing the sense that this is a model you can count on for the long haul.

The powertrain is described as engaging and capable, and the overall package is presented as a strong value for the money. If you’re buying used, the main long-term ownership risk is less about core durability and more about choosing a well-kept example with the features and condition you want.

What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Mazda CX-5?

At 69.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle-history report and then prioritize a thorough pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re considering a higher-trim example. Pay close attention to body condition, interior wear, and whether the technology and safety equipment work as expected.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: Sport trim has the 7-inch touchscreen and basic Mazda Connect setup, while Touring adds Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Grand Touring adds an 8-inch touchscreen, satellite radio, and a 10-speaker Bose system, and Signature adds navigation, a surround-view camera system, and SiriusXM data services.
• Powertrain: The standard 2.5-liter four-cylinder makes 187 horsepower and 186 pound-feet of torque with a six-speed automatic. Grand Touring Reserve and Signature add a turbocharged version that makes 250 hp and 320 lb-ft on premium fuel, or 227 hp and 310 lb-ft on regular fuel.
• Safety package: The i-Activsense suite includes adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, forward collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane departure warning, and lane-keep assist. Adaptive headlights are standard on Grand Touring trim.
• Infotainment: Sport trim gets a 7-inch touchscreen, while Grand Touring adds an 8-inch touchscreen. Touring adds Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and Signature adds navigation and a surround-view camera system.
• Fuel efficiency: The turbocharged engine is rated at 24 mpg combined, the naturally aspirated engine with AWD is rated at 26 mpg combined, and the non-turbo engine with FWD is rated at 28 mpg combined.

Which 2020 Mazda CX-5 trim should I buy?

The 2020 Mazda CX-5 is offered in 5 trim levels: Sport, Touring, Grand Touring, Grand Touring Reserve, and Signature.

Here's the short version:

• Sport: This is the entry point, and it gives you the core CX-5 experience with the standard engine, six-speed automatic, and the 7-inch touchscreen. It makes sense if you want the lowest-cost path into the model, but it leaves out some of the convenience and tech upgrades found higher up.
• Touring: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds Apple CarPlay and Android Auto without jumping all the way to the more expensive trims. If you want the most useful everyday tech for the money, this is the one to focus on.
• Grand Touring: This trim adds the 8-inch touchscreen, satellite radio, and the 10-speaker Bose audio system, making it a stronger pick if you want a more upscale cabin experience. It also brings adaptive headlights as standard equipment.
• Grand Touring Reserve: This is where the turbocharged engine arrives, so it’s the right choice if you want stronger acceleration and more premium performance. It suits buyers who care more about power than keeping costs down.
• Signature: This is the most luxurious version, with navigation, a surround-view camera system, and premium interior touches like Nappa leather and real wood. It’s the right pick if you want the most upscale CX-5 experience.

The safety package is standard on most trims, and adaptive headlights come standard on Grand Touring trim.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Mazda CX-5?

This is a moderate market, so selective buyers can still find value if they shop carefully.

• Deal availability: 38.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 2,489 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 1.77% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 69.7% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $19,185, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2020 Mazda CX-5's resale value?

The current average of $20,138 sits slightly below last year's $20,501.

That softer pricing suggests the model has already absorbed some depreciation, which can help future sellers if they buy at the right price. A used CX-5 purchased near the lower end of the range may have a better chance of holding appeal when it’s time to resell.

The model’s premium feel, strong safety reputation, and broad shopper appeal can support demand over time. Well-kept examples with desirable equipment should remain easier to move than less refined alternatives in the segment.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.83/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2020 Mazda CX-5 safe?

The 2020 Mazda CX-5 earns a Top Safety Pick+ rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety and a five-star overall rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

It earns a 10/10 safety score from our experts.

The standard i-Activsense suite includes adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go capability, forward collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane departure warning, and lane-keep assist. Standard LED headlights and rain-sensing wipers add to the safety story, and adaptive headlights come standard on Grand Touring trim.

Should I buy a 2020 Mazda CX-5 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2020 if:

• 38.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 69.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 1.77% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.83/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2020 model emphasizes premium design, strong safety, and a fun-to-drive character.

Consider the 2019 if:

• At $18,869, the 2019 costs less than the current year's $20,138 average.
• It adds Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, and updated handling.

Consider the 2021 if:

• At $21,915, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $20,138 average.
• It adds a new trim and updated tech while keeping the CX-5’s core strengths.

The bottom line: If you want the best balance of price, safety, and upscale feel, the 2020 is the primary year to target. If you’re especially price-sensitive, the 2019 is worth a look for its lower average price and similar core appeal.
